Classic Rock appreciation thread

Yes! I haven't heard much of their stuff, but what I have heard, I love.

Most people think "Hip To Be Square" is their best tune, but I've always preferred "Do You Believe In Love". It portrays all the doubt and joys that are present when you're falling in love for the first time like few song are able to do.

"Livin Thing" is one of my favorite ELO songs.

Would you call "Xanadu" an ELO song? Cause really, they're nothing more than backup vocals there. But you can detect jeff lynne's writing in some of the lyrics....

I'd dub it as Olivia Newton John featuring ELO, but I wouldn't call it a legit ELO song. It never appears on any of their compilations, though it's on every ONJ one.

I take it back, REM can kind of fit into classic rock.

And so can Nirvana.

This links right back to the comments by Wilhelm. We need a better definition of classic rock. I've heard people who describe Nirvana and REM as classic rock.

Those people are idiots.
It just really depends on how old "classic" is to you. If things like the Cosby Show, Wings, Cheers and Roseanne can be on Nick @ Nite and TV Land, which are for classic television, then I'd say classic rock could start creeping into the nineties by now, I mean thats nearly 20 years ago that the grunge thing started moving... :shrugs:

Oh come on, the NINETIES?

Maybe in a few years, but not yet.

I like Wilhelm's answer.

Rock that doesn't suck.

Yeah, but that still doesn't work. I happen to think early Radiohead and Sam Roberts are pretty damn awesome, but they aren't exactly classic rock.

If nineties TV can be classic why can't nineties music? More GNR stuff came out in the 90s than the 80s, yet noone would hesitate to put them in the Classic genre, would they?

Power of Love is my favorite. Great, great song.

I like "Stuck With You" as well. It's another very uplifting portrait of true love. Kind of like the young, naive couple just starting out in "DYBIL" coming full circle in "Stuck With You".

Then why are Pearl Jam and Nirvana played regularly on numerous classic rock stations?

And so can Nirvana.

It appeared on their "All Over the World" compliation...

I must admit, that song is somewaht of a guilty pleasure. I only like the ELO parts, though

Stoned DJs?

Well going by that logic, The Killers are classic rock. Because I love The Killers, they're my favorite band out there today.

Everthing associated with the movie Xanadu is pretty much a guilty pleasure.

Uh, no.....call it post punk or whatnot, but certainly not calssic rock by any strech of the imagination.

As for grunge, it depends. Some people say Neil Young invented grunge. Neil Young has been around much longer than 14 years.

Then again, some people think Bob Dylan invented rap. :o

Your standards are too high. Half the stuff people are talking about wouldn't count as classic rock if we get too specific. We're basically going by "stuff that might get played on classic rock radio".

Also, didn't Rolling Stone name them as best rock band at one point?

didn't i name Rolling Stone as "most irrelevant tastemaker of a magazine" at one point?

By the way, why the **** is Rolling Stone so big?

That ****'s impossible to hold.

Nirvana: Bleach 1989 - 17 years; Nevermind 1991 - 15 years.

Alice In Chains: Facelift 1990 - 16 years

Soundgarden: Ultramega OK 1988 - 18 years; Louder Than Love 1989 - 17 years

Pearl Jam: Ten 1991 - 15 years

 How is 15 (Pearl Jam and Nirvana's breakout) to 18 (Soundgarden) NOT nearly 20 years?

Whenever I think of Rolling Stone, I think of the points brought up in my favorite movie, Almost Famous:

They trashed "Layla".

Broke up cream.

Ripped apart every Zeppelin album ever made.

Plus they had a list of I think The 500 Most Important Songs In Rock and Roll and they had, among other blatant acts of stupidty, "Bohemian Rhapsody" at 163 and I think only one Pink Floyd song that was somewhere in the 300s'. They also had an Outkast song on the list. And they've become a political magazine nowadays.

Rolling Stone sucks. Except when Cameron Crowe was there.

COME on- myself excluded (because im that cool) how many people owned effin' BLEACH when it first came out?

gimme a break- it wasnt till Nevermind that grunge became a "thing" on the national front.

We're talking radio terms, anyhow- how many times have YOU heard pop radio playing tracks off of BLEACH?
