I guess I'm in the minority that wasn't impressed by the trailer. The Statue of Liberty head is so small that it's about the size of a car, when in reality, it's bigger. And knowing how JJ Abrams, it'll probably start off with a scene where the main character is in danger, then right when we think he'll be killed, it'll cut to 36 hours earlier and the rest of the movie will lead up to it. Also, I don't think we'll see the monster, except for a few glimpses here and there. I highly doubt it this is a big budget movie.

I think we should be able to see the monster's form through smoke or something like that, but not a clear shot.

Much of Lovecraft's creepiness works because the biggest and nastiest of the Great Old Ones are never really seen. People encounter other people who have seen the unspeakable horrors and it's like seeing the girl in the closet near the start of the The Ring (remake). You get to wonder what the hell could have done that but without the big reveal the imagination is left to run wild. In the case of Lovecraft's characters we are likely to encounter someone tearing hair out with ones hand, scribbling incomprehensible symbols on walls with the other and babbling incoherently the whole time after having seen something. Meanwhile, we generally don't encounter the "something" ourselves.

There was a bit of that in the Lovecraft-inspired In The Mouth of Madness and it worked exceedingly well.

Oh I know but this is a different take and remember the novels are a different medium. Not all the times everything that works on the novels will work on film, It would work if it was a straight adaptation of the call of Cthulu but it isn't. If its Ctulthu its just the creature but the seting is completely different we'll see, this may even have nothing to do with Lovecraft I'am just wishing it is.

But I would really like to see it, it could work both ways in that sometimes we would see glimses of the creature tearing something or someone apart and sometimes we'll get full wide body shots to give us quick glimpses of the terror they're running from but mostly shown from the characters perspective.
The effectiveness of showing the mosnter also depends on the mood created in each scene. For one I would like this to be more horror than fantasy escapism I want something really terryfying horrific specially if its something like Cthulu. I hope this gets and R but probably it won't. I can wish.

EVERYONE!!! Its gonna be a movie about the awakening of MUSTAKRAKISH!!!!

"Awaken,
Awaken,
Mustakrakish,
The lake troll"

''Awaken, awaken, awaken, awaken,
Take the land that must be taken.
Awaken, awaken, awaken, awaken,
Devour worlds, smite, forsaken.

Rise up from your thousandth year of sleep,
Bring forth the decreed eternally.
I command you to
Rise, rise, rise, rise, rise, rise, rise, rise and, Awaken''

Hahahaha, Dethklok at its best :woot:

I agree. Film is a visual medium and you need some sort of payoff. The short from Signs where he sees the alien on the barn roof gives me chills even now. That was the kind of thing this needs.

man... people HATED signs, but it was one of the only non-zombie movies that really captured the feel of like... the original 'Night of the living dead'...

being boarded up in the house, and all.

loved it, for that alone.

For those interested, here are the SoL head size.
Head from chin to cranium 17' 3"
Head thickness from ear to ear 10' 0"

The creepiest shot of the aliens in the movie was the alien at the birthday party to me. Just shivers.

I want so badly for this to be a film adaptation of Rampage...

...That..would be awesome! :D

Another theory that went through my head is a Ghostbusters sequel or remake.

Hey folks, Harry here... There's conspiracy theories abounding regarding JJ's little flick to juice us up for his badass STAR TREK recreation. So JJ Abrams wrote me to give us all a clue, cuz we're at square one of this mystery! But note... the game sites apparently have nothing to do with JJ. And also... he seems to be stating that you guys have yet to find all the sites he's put up... and yes, you'll have to find them. The man is laughing at you, me and all of those hiding in the shadows. SO... find em if you can... let us know here at AICN... seems we have a scavanger hunt, ain't it cool?

Dear Sir,

Thanks for your support of our little movie. I can't wait to talk to you more about it -- of course, knowing you, by the time we talk you'll know more than I will.

Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we're doing some fun stuff on the web. But, obviously, if the movie doesn't kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat's about what's online? So as you can imagine, we're focusing mostly on THAT. For what it's worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site. The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us.

Stay cool the rest of the summer -- and thanks per usual for AICN!

JJ

Well balls that sucks. Now on to more mystery. There are probably clues on other sites. I heard a rumor that the movie is being filmed under the name Slusho which is apparently a drink that a character always ordered on Alias. If you go to www.slusho.com it's an actual site but it seems unrelated.

Hahahaha awesome.

I called the April's Fool in August thing.
