Kong vs Pirates

Well to be honest, I don't like the idea of Davy Jones as an illithid anyway, so him looking different would be fine by me, and yes, I do think that with skilled make-up effects people that his look can be duplicated.

Pirates for me, just because I can actually sit through the movie.

This isn't about the quality of the film....this is about the special effects.

By the way, King Kong is WAAAAAYYYYYY better than the ****** mess known as POTC DMC. I can't believe I saw that crap in theaters

That is not true. I think WETA has a bit of a problem with compositing. This was noticible in the LOTR trilogy aswell. While the animation was impressive, the digital characters and creatures did not blend so well with their enviroment. Now if you look at Davy Jones, its like he is relly there, standing next to the actors.

That's because he was there, played by Bill Nighy.

I think King Kong is a better movie. Dead Man's Chest felt like it was leading nowhere.

Pirates. I didnt care for Peter Jackson's King Kong, i'd rather watch the 1976 remake.

Both were fantastic but I think Pirates had better effects overall.

All because of Davy Jones, he honestly looked real and tangible. King Kong you could still tell he was CGI(wasn't in your face obvious though, effects were still great), it was his face that was the greatest part. They were able to show some great emotion from Kong's face with CGI but overall Davy Jones was better.

I voted for Kong, I think the effects were better overall. What really sold me though was when Kong and Ann are on top of the Empire State Building I actually felt a little fear from the height they were at and not movie created fear, but genuine fear of heights fear.

Yesterday I’ve watched Dead man’s chest on Blue Ray (I have the trilogy) and today I watched Kong in blue Ray, and my opinion now 100%. Kong had the better effects overall. For me Kong himself is almost as good as Davy, but all the others stuff like Dinosaurs, Bugs, fish and Art where also in perfect quality. In pirates except of Davy Jones all the other effects where little above average.
But still Davy Jones in the best looking CG character in my list. Second place for Gollum.

I'm all for people having freedom of opinion when it comes to not liking Jackson's Kong, but to prefer the '76 movie over it? I hope a giant gorilla craps in your bedroom, sir.

Voted for Pirates, King Kong himself looked amazing but the rest of the effects looked horrible to me. The dinosaurs looked nowhere near as good as Jurassic Park which was made 12 years before it!

you's crazy. most of the effects in JP still hold up to today's standards, that's true...but the T-Rex's in Kong were much more detailed and dynamic than the T-Rex in Jurassic Park.

Gotta give it to Pirates in the end. Kong and those grub worms that ate the cook looked very realistic and were excellent creations by the SFX team. The dinos, not so much in my opinion. In Pirates, Jones and his crew looked awesome throughout.

It's just wrong! The only bad effect in Kong was with the dinosaurs in the canion. Still Kong is superior for effects than POTC.

For all the raves about Davy Jones being "realistic", from an overall FX standpoint, the rest of his crew looked pretty bad at points, most noticeably "flat" renders. Kong's more elaborate FX gave alot of dimension and depth to the FX. Kong had insects flying around him, leaves stuck in his fur, dirt, ect. Davy just had great surface textures and rendering.

Personally, I believe WETA surpassed ILM's standard quality with Kong, and have only been getting better. Davy Jones looked good at points, but the FX surrounding him greatly brings down my overall perception.
