Since I’ve seen it been discussed a lot, I put a poll. What movie has the better Visual Effects? King Kong or Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead man’s chest?

Note: This is not a thread of ‘’who is the better movie’’ this in only effects:

Here’s a refresher:

Pirates. Some of the Kong (overall, not just the ape) effects were a bit hit-or-miss for me.

Both were very entertaining, with very impressive fx.
But as far as story goes...KING KONG wins by a mile.
The Pirates story was actually pretty weak.

Ever sine Jurassic Park, big creatures are kind of old hat for me. I tend to expect them to look great, so there was no "WOW" moment for me when it came to how great the FX where in Kong.

As for Pirates, I was blown away by how well done Jones was, I couldn't tell if what I was seeing was a practical effect or CGI. So I have to give it to them.

I have to go with King Kong. The CGI was used to create a whole new world, forests, bugs, creatures, and landscapes. Not to mention Kong was made a year before POTC.

I'm not saying Davy Jones was bad, but that was just one character. The rest of the effects in Pirates were about average.

i most definitly have to go with davy jones, it does look like they used prosthetics, but then again even better, it just looks real.

as good and as detaile as kong was it never just hit that level of reality for me, then agian it may be that i have far more memory references of what apes look like than i do squid-beards

Davy Jones and his cronies were very impressive, but Kong had a lot more effects shots that needed to be pulled off...and even though several shots in Kong were sketchy (particularly the stampede with the raptors) there were more beautiful and dynamic shots in King Kong than in Pirates. Davy Jones was awesome to watch, but Pirates didn't have to handle as many shots as Kong did and Jackson pulled most of those shots off very well...

...so i vote for King Kong.

Pirates definitely. It may not have needed as much cgi-shots as Kong, but with how much Kong was cgi-driven, Jurassic Park still is leagues ahead of it in terms of sfx.
All of Kong looked too fake with all of the creatures. The landscapes were good, but nothing new, and also can be found in the real world instead of it just being pure cgi.

Pirates visuals all meshed very well together. Even though DMC is the worst POTC movie for me, it managed not to look fake at any point.

ILM, the guys who did GI JOE! wooooo!11....

Sorry.....I had to say it.

got em both on blu ray, and yes they both look great, but man....kong looks real!

huh? i thought the creatures were some of the most realistic looking things of the movie. you don't get an audience that squirms in their seats if a 5 foot centipede looks fake.

The landscapes were good, but nothing new, and also can be found in the real world instead of it just being pure cgi.
the landscapes on Skull Island were pretty unique and would've been pretty hard to pull off in the real world....not to mention the numerous shots of 1930's New York, that DEFINITELY can't be practically replicated.

Pirates visuals all meshed very well together. Even though DMC is the worst POTC movie for me, it managed not to look fake at any point.
it's not a perfect FX movie. DMC has it's fair share of fake looking shots.

Davy Jones and his cronies were very impressive, but Kong had a lot more effects shots that needed to be pulled off...and even though several shots in Kong were sketchy (particularly the stampede with the raptors) there were more beautiful and dynamic shots in King Kong than in Pirates. I agree.

The movement of Kong's hair was amazing. His facial expressions really came through which allowed the audience to understand his feelings despite him not being able to speak.

And those huge leech like creatures were definitely photorealisitc. Also, I don't know why the stampede scene gets bad rep, I thought it looked fine. You could see the muscles of the creatures move as they ran.

Aw, I was hoping that this was going to be a new movie. :hehe:

I miself voted for Kong. The movie had just alot CG and all of it wast above avrage!

thats a tough one
Pirates had the best cgi character ever created... however everything else was a little above average and one or two bad.

Kong however had something as big as king kong and dinosaurs and they all looked amazing..though not as good as davy jones (but better than anything else in pirates)

i chose pirates just because of davy jones...
although i would agree that overall kong has better fx.

Are we only considering Dead Man's Chest? Because the maelstrom sequence at the end of AWE was insane.

Kong was awesome, the level of detail in the animation in HD is crazy

Why when everybody talk about Kong effects you all talking only about Kong himself and the dinosaurs? For me the best effects in that movie was the one with the bugs.

This suckers are as real looking as Davy:
