No, the effects weren't better than in SM-3. The Sandman formation scene alone just looked as real as could be.

I agree with you on the Sandman bit but the rest for me was... sometimes I said to myself "Oh, that's fake", I hated that about it. I was never a fan of CGI-crazed movies where in every action sequence or whatever is loaded with CGI and it just sets me off. I liked 'Cloverfield's CGI better because they didn't really over-pack it all and the CGI they had was terrific.

Well, it's okay if you like it better but to be truthful, for the most part SM-3's CGI was much better than Cloverfield's. I do think that we should see more of the parasites and Clover himself in the sequel though as we only got less than six minutes of screentime with him in the first movie.
