Conan - Part 1

That was cool but, Conan the "Simmerian"? I am sure I am wrong, but I had always assumed it was Conan the "Kimmerian". The hard 'c' seems to make more sense to me, as it is common to practically all Germanic and Celtic languages (and in Conan's name itself). "Simmerian" is too close to "Sumerian", for my liking.

Not the only thing they got wrong but pronunciation isn't that big a deal. Didn't Bale pronounce it as Raz Al Gool in BB?

Yeah, but that sounds less irksome than "Simmerian" to me.

The "Cimmerians" sound like steel-loving barbarians from the dreary North. The "Simmerians" sound like a decadent mercantile people with a penchant for orgies and intrigue.

Okay, so its a niggle. But its my niggle!

I get it, like the morons who hear Arnold saying "Cimmeria" and hear "Sumeria" and think it's real.

Cimmeria is pronounced with a hard C like a K.

You would be wrong, you are getting these fictional people confused with the actual ancient equestrian nomadic people who were living near what is now the Ukraine.

Robert E Howard wrote his characters to be called Cimmerians - as in Simmerians. Hence everyone in the history of the general and educated public pronouncing it as they do - "Simmeria". Were it different, Mr. Howard would have corrected it before he died.

Can you find any refernce to REH official pronounciation on that? Most of the lit Conan fans I have met used a hard C.

I always figured it was pronounced with a hard C because the Cimmerians are meant to be ancestors of the Celts, and in Welsh, Irish, and Scottish Gaelic, the letter 'C' only represents a /k/ sound. For example, the Welsh form of their own country's name, Cymru (rather reminiscent of 'Cimmeria,' come to think of it), is pronounced with a hard C.

I think you may be right, I remember one of the Conan anthologies having an essay by REH at the beginning talking about the origins of all the Hyborian lands. I vaguely remember reading it was a hard 'C' because I had always thought it was a soft 'c' too.

Yes, you are talking about the essay named Hyborea. It is usually at the front of Conan collections.

Regardless of its correctness, I just think "Kimmerian" sounds an awful lot better than "Simmerian".

That video actually looked pretty good.

It's interesting that a lot of the Cimmerian kids looked Polynesian. The whole carry the egg around competition was in that Easter Island movie, Rapa Nui.

I think they have just tried to give the Cimmerians distinct ethnic features- white skin and dark (or grey) hair.

Hi folks,

I just wanted to thank all the Conan fans who stopped by Lionsgate's booth during the show this weekend - I work with the agency who designed & built the TouchWall, and we're just ridiculously pleased about the response it's gotten from folks who saw it. Hope you all got to come meet Jason at the booth - dude's a straight shooter in person (as his comments from last week may have revealed).

If it's cool, I'd like to share a link to a story Mashable wrote about the TouchWall complete with a video - check it out if you couldn't make it to the booth: http://mashable.com/2011/07/22/comicco-touchwall/

Thanks again!

The blood looks awful in that clip lol.

I might check it out, I need to see a few more clips before I decide.

Arnold approves of Jason Momoa(not that it would have mattered to "real" Conan fans if he hadn't, anyway): http://www.nextmovie.com/blog/blog/jason-momoa-conan-the-barbarian-arnold-schwarzenegger/

"I was excited to find out that he actually watched it and liked it a lot," Jason Momoa tells NextMovie of Arnold Schwarzenegger's reaction. "He was proud of me and thought I did a good job."

Well it don't matter But I think it's still cool that he has class by watching it&praising Momoa and IF he was lying&talking BS then at least he was nice enough!!

He could have pulled a Nicholson and be pissed like he was with the fact that they were doing the Joker for a Batman sequel.....Even though it was part of a re-boot!

You know, real fans? Like people who read REH and actually know the character, rather than people who think Conan is just a big, dumb Austrian guy?
