Conan - Part 1

I doubt it. Sleeper hits are extremely rare these days. If you don't make a ton of money in the first two weeks you're pretty much done.

Maybe this could be a sleeper hit.

Probably. Even though it will up against a kids film and a teen-horror film, it's still a safe month for an R-rated action flick. The promotion for the film has been solid and it has a healthy budget.

Thanks for posting. after reading the novelization I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the story. Loved reading the reviews with the "spoilers."

...don't even mention those!!

As long as this new Conan is as good as "Solomon Kane"(the first Howard character that's really been done justice to on film), then it will have done its job.

I loved Solomon Kane. Any whisper of a sequel, yet?

^It hasnt even had a release in the US yet so a sequel is unfortunately looking like a long way off.

Either way, Solomon Kane is really worth watching. It's been released on blu ray and dvd in the UK. I saw it online and it was fu**** amazing. It's a must see for anyone reading this thread.

So Solomon Kane is really good? I've had that sitting in my hard drive waiting to be watched for a while now but keep getting sidetracked. I'll definitely have to watch it now

You won't be dissaponted.

Like John Millius and Marcus Nispel have done on their Conan films, an origin has been provided for the character of Solomon Kane, but, though Howard never provided an origin for Kane(just like he didn't with Conan), it really works for the film. James Purefoy is excelllent in the role!! SK doesn't have the budget of the new "Conan The Barbarian", but it manages to do much in spite of. This is the stuff Hollywood should be releasing instead of crap like "Jonah Hex".

Supposedly, "Solomon Kane" already has a distributor. I imagine that once "Conan" is released and does good business, SK will most likely be released. Wether it will be theatrically or dtv, who knows?

Wait, so it never got a cinema release? I could have sworn it was in Aussie cinemas at one point. I remember seeing posters

I was reffering to the pending U.S. release. In almost everywhere else it did get a release(in Spain it was right up there with Avatar at the top list of the box office for a little bit).

Yes, I thought the first half of the film was the strongest. James Purefoy turned Solomon Kane into a really deep and conflicted character. The only possible complaint I could level at it was that some of the villains were a bit uninspiring, but that's just another good reason for a sequel!

EDIT: Solomon Kane makes both wheel-lock pistols and West Country accents cool again. No mean feat.

Yeah I own it on Blu-ray myself, not familiar that much with Howard or the character, but REALLY enjoyed the movie and would definately be in line for a sequel.

Yep, see my response above, I loved the movie and had never even heard of the character before.

I think someone should bump the Solomon Kane thread, isn't this about Conan? :oldrazz:

That Solomon Kane movie was damn cool. It also looked pretty good and well made for not costing an exorbitant sum.

the guy playing conan looks weird without facial hair. kind of like a lion or something, maybe he should have been a thundercat instead, lol. im used to seeing him on game of thrones. seeing him without facial hair is freeky.

...well, another name Conan is called is "Amra", which means 'lion'.

Yeah, Solomon Kane was a pretty good movie. The overall plot was a tad simplistic and Jason Flemyng's character REALLY should have had more screentime, but regardless, it's still a cool film. Purefoy is awesome in the lead role and the movie looks great aside from some occasionally so-so special effects (which are still better than some big budget movies like G.I. Joke).
