Conan - Part 1

Saw a new (at least I think it was new) TV spot for this during Franklin & Bash. It had a few scenes I hadn't seen before.

Jason Momoa will be on The Tonight Show tonight. Let's see what clip they'll show!

Anyone else read his interview in Empire? Very encouraging, I thought.

Just saw a clip from The Tonight Show. It showed Conan fighting those sand demons from the trailers, and it was pretty awesome!! Very frenetic!!

....here's the clip of that scene(at 2:36): http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/jason-momoa-part-2-8-4-11/1345348

Also, from the Marcus Nispel/Fredrick Malmberg interview in Fangoria:

“If we get Conan right, we have re-established the franchise and we can then go ahead with adaptations of the original stories”.

“We respect [1982 Conan] for what it was, but we capture Howard’s Conan better. We really wanted this one to stand on its own. There were even a couple of actors from the original who came and wanted to do little parts, but we had to say no”.

“There are some scenes that will make you cringe. Then there are others where we said, ‘Maybe that’s a little too dark, and we’ll put that on the extended version”.

It already seems the theatrical version will be very dark/gritty/bloody&gory and there also be an extended version?.....I love it!

I want this to be good, but i have a feeling it may end up a bit ****. Like this years The Mummy 3 or something.

Anything is possible, but, sheeesh!! To use The Mummy 3 as a worst case scenario is stretching it quite a bit, imo. "Pathfinder" and "Priest" could be somewhat more reasonable worst-case scenarios. So far, I get vibes that this might be this year's "Rambo"(2008). It'll be the gritty, unyielding raw violence of "Rambo", with the dark, macabre fantasy of "Solomon Kane".

Mummy 3 really that bad? I can't believe it's worse than mummy 2... Glad I skipped it.

I think it will be more like The Mummy 1. It'll be a little corny here and there, but ultimately come together just as a fun movie. That's all it needs to do for me, since the iconic REH imagery all seems to be in place, it's going to be cool one way or the other :P

From reading those two negative and positive reviews, and splitting the difference...I think this movie is going to be to Conan what XMOW was to Wolverine. At best.

The lead will feel like the character in the flesh somewhat, you will enjoy some of the action, but there will be parts where you are cringing, and pissed off they did not do this, that and the next thing instead of what they did do.

I wouldnt be surprised if this was bad at all. I mean neither the writer or director have done anything good.

However, Momoa seems good in the role and the action looks like it could be fun

Nispel's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake was good.

Regarding the writer, which one are you talking about? The original creator Robert E. Howard, or the screenwriter(s)?

screenwriters. Robert E Howard isnt the one writing the movie

Well, I'll tell you what; the worst thing this can be is an R-rated "Kull The Conqueror", I'll tell you that much. I thought the negative review went out of its way to trash the movie, while the positive one is more in line with what I expect. While I don't expect the movie to be 100% accurate to Howard, I do expect it to be an admirable nod and tribute to his work.

Ok. Since you put it in singular, I had to make sure.

Most of the previous film work by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer has been pretty "meh", yes(although Marvel did hire them to do a Doctor Strange draft, so maybe there just might be more to them). However, their script for Conan went through very significant rewrites. The most significant of them was by Sean Hood(who is also credited in the film), who is a true Howard-scholar. Most of all Conan/Howard fans were happy with his take.

They need to introduce Thoth-Amon in the next one.

If I recall, in the Oppenheimer/Donnelly script the character is mentioned and had something to do with the plot. I'm not sure if he's mentioned in Hood's rewrite.

They aren't much better lol.

Good lord I hope not, though a box office success that was a horrible film.

I meant in relation to the Mummy 3 comparison.

And Mummy wasn't that bad, it was corny in bits, but in the way that a monster movie should be. Would you reather a gritty, reboot of the Mummy story, where we can really get BEHIND the Mummy, find out what makes him tick? :P
