Daredevil Daredevil General Discussion Thread - Part 2

Definitely questions I'm excited to learn the answer to. I could see the whole thing as an evolution, he starts out wanting to do this thing, hides his identity in a simple way, then slowly finds his way to Daredevil. The press and Claire Temple will probably play roles in Matt's journey from mysterious, masked vigilante to Daredevil.

In the Ben Affleck film, he used that symbolism because he remembered it from his father who had that kind of nickname as a boxer. It therefore became his first costume as a homage to that.

In the comics though, Matt had the yellow and black outfit and it looked more like a circus costume. His name seemed to come more from someone who is definitely without fear - a daring and brave person who can traverse heights like a tightrope walker and do all kinds of acrobats high above the city like a trapeze artist.

In this series, however, his first costume doesn't appear to be a homage to his father. Therefore it seems that if someone gives him that name, it would be more out of a similar reason to the comics. Temple could perhaps say that he's a real daredevil because he doesn't seem to have any fear or perhaps he's very foolhardy, especially for a blind man.

Bullies called him daredevil to mock him because he wouldn't fight. Him taking this name is his way of giving them the finger.

I could see the Man Without Fear title being applied by Temple, or an article by Ben Urich, either in reference to his physical feats or to the fact that he's the only one brave or stupid enough to stand against the machinations of organized crime in Hell's Kitchen.

I would prefer they went with Jack Murdock going by "Battlin'" Jack rather than Jack "The Devil", so I wouldn't want that kind of direct inspiration for the name like the Affleck movie. And I kinda doubt they'll go the original comics route of having "Daredevil" be a sarcastic nickname applied by bullies, but you never know, maybe they'll make that work.

Maybe Hell's Kitchen is plunged back into being a crime ridden zone because of the Battle of New York?

I'm fine with Matt eventually adapting a red outfit of some sort for symbolism: even if most everyone believes he's "just" a man, when a criminal sees a red silhouette emerging from the shadows? Matt wants some small superstitious part of their brain to be thinking "its the Devil come to take me to Hell".

Yeah, I think this was a retconned version, but it's the one I'm familiar with.

Someone can film him on their phone jumping blindfolded between buildings and post it on the internet titled Daredevil in Hells Kitchen. He likes the idea.

There are loads of ways to go about it.

Maybe Claire Temple sees it, because I don't know how much time Murdock spends browsing the internet as a blind man.

Also, it's just as well that they call him that, and not "Idiot in Hell's Kitchen" for thinking he's doing something so foolhardy.

Claire Temple searches for news of Matt's exploits, brings up youtube video of him running along a telephone-wire, Frank Miller style. Headline reads, "Local Jackass Disrupts Hell's Kitchen."

Matt- What are they saying about me?

Claire- Um, they're calling you a real daredevil...

Matt- Hmm, Daredevil!

Smashcut to costume-making montage.

Lol. He'd know if she were lying though. Although perhaps he's humouring her. Imagine if she told him the truth:

Claire: They're calling you a real jackass.

Matt: Hmm, Jackass!

With David Tennant as Purple Man, who is both a Jessica Jones character and Daredevil character, I would definitely like to see some crossover eventually. Can you imagine D'Onofrio's Fisk and Tennant's Kilgrave working together to torment Matt?

I wish Tenant had filmed a cameo for DD. He could still do so if they can insert it in, perhaps as a stinger at the end of the series. That will show there is more of a link between the two.

And he's originally a DD villain, so it's a shame that Jessica Jones only seems to feature him.

Also, I don't know if Kilgrave would work with Fisk, or only let Fisk think that he's working with him, but really trying to influence him in fact.

Just for something fun to talk about while we wait like desperate maniacs for a trailer or pic of the final suit; are there any specific moments or motiffs from the comic you're all hoping will make it into the series? For me it's mostly about the mood and look. I know we've heard it's going to have an emphasis on the crime drama aspect, and the pictures we've seen have all been very verite, 70's Scorsese-esque, and I'm jazzed about that. But I'm also hoping they find a way to blend in some of the very stylized, noirish lighting that was prevalent in Miller's era on the book.

That's good stuff.

Is anyone else checking news feeds several times a day in hopes of new Daredevil stuff like a trailer? There really is this powerful feeling that something big will surely hit any time now.

As for some of my favourite imagery...

I think I'm looking forward more to this than any other comic book property, film or otherwise, this year.

Same here. Age of Ultron isn't too far behind, but this is my #1.

No doubt Ultron will be good but I kind of know what to expect with its tone now, we've seen a lot about it.

Daredevil on the other hand is a clean slate with unknown limitless potential, probably helps I've read more DD comics than any of the Avengers so I am more interested in the character. There's also the hope it could lead to other new things (Punisher etc)

Me for the past month. Everyday I am convinced that 'today is it'.

It's tomorrow for sure.

What kind of theme tune should DD have, if it has one at all? I think there should be a distinctive theme though.

Probably not a theme tune in the sense of old school long credits. But some kind of iconic score or motif would be quite good.
