The Melvin Potter Gladiator is awesome and very iconic. It's just that X-Men became so popular, and the Shiar version was featured in the cartoon, that everyone mostly knows that version and forgets about the Potter version.

But he's quite possibly one of the coolest looking villains:

Almost even too good to just be a villain, kind of like how Ghost Rider was originally designed as one too, but looked too good to be one.

He kinda looks like Whirlwind.

He kinda looks like Whirlwind.

As far as I know, Whirlwind came after Gladiator, and the blades were copied from Gladiator too. Whirlwind doesn't even always have blades on his wrist, whereas for Gladiator, the blades and spikes are his signature look.

EDIT: As the Human Top, Whirlwind debuted first in 1963, but looked completely different. Then Gladiator debuted in 1966, and then only in 1967 did the Human Top return with the new alias "Whirlwind" with the wrist blades. But the blades haven't always featured in his look, whereas they always have for Gladiator.

Whirlwind came three years before Gladiator but back then he was called Human Top and looked like this

Human Top first appeared as Whirlwind with the look he is most known for in Avengers 46 (1967) which was just under a year after Gladiator first appeared

if d'onofrio is that excited...then i think we are going to be in store for something special.

Hmm, well that's...different:

That's what I thought. But it was done so well that I thought it deserved a look anyway.

Lol literally what the hell, where is there a connection between those two things . Still good though

Lol, that is the most random video. The only connection I see is because DD is talking about evil, and they show us clips of Dr Evil. But that is such a tenuous link.

The thing is that you can't really appreciate Potter's attempts to reform if he already starts off that way. You need to see him as a villain first. That's what gave it added weight in the comics, because you knew that he had been a recurring villain in the early DD comics for all these years. If he just shows up on the scene already wanting to reform, then that's all you'll come to know him as - someone trying to reform. You don't see much of a journey at all.

Oh, I agree. But have him be a villain, have his trial, have him reformed. I don't think there needs to be more.

Gladiator did make him one in the comics without knowing his identity though.

I think he made it for someone pretending to be Daredevil, but with consent of Daredevil.

In the comics, Gladiator tried to reform, but then came into contact with the Purple Man. And look who is over on Jessica Jones causing trouble!

Whats most important to me is that this show is awesome and we want it to continue. As cool as DDs iconic suit is, imagine if you had a terrible show with a great suit. I think you know what Im saying. Show/characters > suit.

Totally agree. TASM 2 is a perfect example.

I agree. But if we can get both, that's even better!

Damn I do hope they just keep that suit for future films though. It's done, that's all that is needed. Stop tinkering with it. It's perfect or as close as we'll ever get.

Has there been any talk about how Daredevil gets his name? There are two different versions (that I'm aware of) from the comics:

1. He's a swashbuckling daredevil, so...Daredevil.
2. When Matt was a kid he was picked on and called "Daredevil" by the bullies. So...Daredevil.

It's pretty great for sure, but would like it even more if it was identical to John Romita's Spider-man, especially the back would be improved by his design. At least that is my opinion, although don't get me wrong, I would not be disappointed with more of the ASM2 design either. Just saying Romita's for me would be a small improvement.

I'd say go with the media giving him the label. Sure, it's easy and cheap but it's also the most believable scenario which is why it's used over and over again.

I probably wouldn't even notice such a small change.

Actually Mr. Fear drove Gladiator insane with a toxin that removed his sense of fear, so Mr. Fear ruined Gladiator's reformation, not Purple Man.

And here is the thing with Gladiator, there was no natural story arc where he reforms, I am pretty sure Miller just retconned Melvin Potter into a psychotic, when he was written by Stan Lee, Gladiator was just a thug and a bully, he wasn't insane. So I think they would need to change and streamline things to make Gladiator's transition from villain to civilian more believable on TV. Plus if Melvin was psychotic enough to think he was in ancient Rome, I doubt Kingpin would hire him to design clothes and weapons for him.
