Daredevil Daredevil General Discussion Thread - Part 8

What, you guys think the Hand is like...boring or something? :o

How does one go about making ninja assassins boring? :(
You take away the ninjas. While I really enjoyed Defenders I'm annoyed we didn't see them actually fight ninjas. Plus while Daredevil did a great job building them up as a dark and mysterious force, then Iron Fist just turned them into another bland crime organization taking away what made them interesting.

Actually, I felt like the Hand were boring in DD season 2 as well. Honestly, Iron Fist did it no harm for me. I was already bored with them.

The Hand would have been more exciting if they had a better end goal. Digging up a dragon's bones for some level of immortality, even though they could clearly already raise people from the dead, just made no sense.

I take it that whatever they needed to raise people from the dead was some concoction made with the dragon bones. So the 2 goals are linked.

Yeah, that was really annoying not having them be a major threat in Defenders, while Iron Fist trivialised them.

Maybe, but that wasn't ever explicitly explained to us. Nor was the importance of the Black Sky.

The whole of Defenders felt very aimless to me. It was a team up for the sake of a team up.

Introducing the Beast or a Shadowland adaptation would have been a better way to go, IMO. And would've made the Hand more than another generic gang-type enemy.

Where did all the Hand ninjas go after Midland Circle went down? We haven't seen them, but I assume they're still around somewhere, right?

I am sure they will comeback someday. I thought the need for the dragon bone was fairly clear, especially since they state their ability to resurrect was gone after they raised Elektra. Now, where I do agree with you is the Black Sky. I have no idea what one is even to this day. They never clarified her importance, and that is something DD season 2 failed at as well. Passed being an awesome fighter, what is a Black Sky? The world may never know.

A lot of folks thought the Black Sky would be a vessel for The Beast. Which made so much sense, I was baffled when it wasn't true.

There's been no indication that Elektra will show up in this season of DD, has there? I haven't heard so, but it may be something they're keeping under wraps.

As far as we're aware, she is not in it. Honestly, her inclusion would seem out of place given what this season is about really.

She's a big part of why Matt is in the mental and physical state he's in...I could see them making it work. But only for like, half an episode. She doesn't need any more focus, that's for sure.

I see her maybe getting a mention, but that's it. I do wonder if the intention was for Elektra to get a series post-Defenders. I would be okay with the Hand being in something like that, but I want them nowhere near the main 4 shows for a while.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised when Danny didn't mention them every 30 seconds in IF season 2. I fully expected him to.

In season 2 The hand were treated almost like a mysterious force of nature, sure their were plenty of underlings but they also had some elite soldiers that really put up a fight. And during the hospital scene it almost turned into a horror movie. Stick treated them like the boogey man. They had a great set up but then Iron Fist pulled back on that way too much and Defenders followed suit. Should have at least kept a couple ninjas.

I felt like the resurrection stuff was fairly well demonstrated even if not specifically stated. But the Black Sky and it's importance wasn't. From what I gather They resurrect people by mixing dragon's remains (Shao Lao is known as "the undying" after all) and is mixed in with the blood of children (the ones kidnapped in DD season 2) which is stored in the coffin. The subject is then submerged inside the coffin until they are revived. They seemed to have used this process on others as a means of maintain control and loyalty. Certain soldiers, assets, etc. (Like Harold Meacham) apparently they were a little too cavalier or underestimated how long uncovering the NYC dragon would take and ran out of the main ingredient. It's also suggested that one use of the process is good for multiple resurrections (but nothing indicates exactly how many times).

As for the Black Sky it appears if certain people undergoes the process they gain super strength and... that's it. I suspect the top five have encountered them before and Alexandra had been the most interested in pursuing it with hopes of creating great and great warriors and gaining new understanding of the process. From what I can tell the markers for a Black Sky candidate is sociopaths tendencies, I assume there's more to it but it was never elaborated on.

Personally I loved how the resurrection stuff was handled and unveiled. I like when shows plant seeds rather than just give one big exposition dump. I loved the twist with the dragon I felt that it all tied everything together, immortal villains, the importance of the Iron Fist, how it threatens the city, etc. The black sky on the other hand was a disappointment because they really built it up almost as a harbinger or doom, end of days stuff. But then just "Oh they get a little stronger. That's all"

Either way by the end of Defenders the Hand had basically worn their welcome. Hinted at in season 1 of Daredevil, built up is season 2, then thoroughly explored in both Iron Fist and Defenders, there's not that much left to do with them. I was hoping Iron Fist season 2 would hint that many surviving members would turn to crime and that's been Danny's focus between Defenders and season 2. But their done, best to move on.

Elodie Yung was also pregnant when DDS3 was filming. And she cut her hair short right before The Defenders came out, which makes me think she's been told not to worry about having to play Elektra for awhile.

Yeah, I thought that was clear. They kept talking about how they were running out of the substance that made them long-lived. I thought that was precisely the idea at the end because the dragons were immortal.

Theoretically they could still pick up that thread in that direction but I'm not sure anybody is clamoring for that. As headcanon is enough.

That seemed to be pretty much Erik Oleson's mindspace towards handling that topic. When he described Matt's situation entering the season at BUILD, he seemed to be saying in the subtext "Elektra won't be making any onscreen appearances this year, even though she most likely did play a part in Matt surviving Midland Circle."

Any word on when reviews are disembargoed?
