Daredevil Daredevil General Discussion Thread - Part 8

Overall as a show itself, not just with the Marvel brand. It worked as a political crime drama/thriller too. Most fun I had watching a show this year. And I've been very vocal about my criticisms with the other Marvel shows, but this one really clicked for me.
Ah gotya. Yes I agree. I wasn't meaning to totally binge it as I had a lot on my plate that weekend but once I started there was no way of stopping. Everyone involved in this show deserves a tonne of credit and I hope they can all stay together for more seasons.

Well I came in with low expectations, so that probably helped a lot. Couldn't even start Luke Cage season 2 past the first episode because I was really bored and The Defenders was a huge letdown. So I watched Daredevil S03 with a "ok, let's see" attitude and it won me over within the first couple of episodes. I was hooked, they totally got the tone of the character right.

As far as S4 goes, it it happens I hope they stay focused. I can see them trying to tie up loose ends from Luke Cage and IF but hopefully it doesn’t feel tacked on.

If Daredevil gets another season, I don’t need any interactions with Luke or Danny. I’ll only accept Typhoid Mary but only her. Keep it exclusive to Daredevil characters only.

I'm in the same camp. I want season 4 to stay focused on Daredevil. If they want to bring someone else from a different show, bring in Typhoid Mary and maybe bring back the Punisher for a cameo, but that's it. I don't want them to use the Daredevil show to continue the story of Luke Cage or Iron Fist now that their shows have been canceled. I don't wanna see Luke, Danny or Jessica in season 4. Side characters like Hogarth are OK as long as it makes sense for the story, that'd be enough interconnectivity for me. I'm already annoyed by the fact that this show's storyline and overall quality have been tainted by The Defenders. I don't want any of that anymore. Maybe I'm in a minority here, but I wanna be able to watch only Daredevil and still have a complete story that makes sense.

The only person I'd be fine with showing up out of the other 3 heroes, is Jessica Jones. Matt and Jessica had crazy chemistry with each other and I'd love to see them interact together again for an episode or two. Seriously, after I watched the Defenders I didn't care about seeing a Heroes for Hire show anymore, I wanted a Matt & Jessica spin-off.

Jessica or Punisher crossing into Daredevil makes more sense. Jessica is a PI and can help investigate stuff. Though even there, I don't think she is needed. Luke or Danny don't blend in as seamlessly.

Not needed but it can be a natural inclusion, which I'd be all for. Punisher obviously can and has made sense. The others are more complicated.

Punisher is fairly easy to integrate, and he is always welcome.

This version of Punisher can hold his own against any of the best Daredevil show characters, and that is about as big a compliment as you can give.

I do think the 2 best portrayals in the Netflix shows are Vincent D'Onofrio and Jon Bernthal. I would put them up there with the movie actors in their roles, also. That said, Charlie Cox elevated himself this season and I think got himself close to them.

Agreed. Cox comes narrowly 3rd to those 2 who are utterly irreplaceable.

Casting on this show has been flawless since the very first season. Every actor portraying every character is great and 100% perfect for their part. I'd have trouble seeing any of these characters portrayed by different actors after this. Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil is probably my favorite superhero casting decision ever. He's spot on. I find it amazing that apparently the same people responsible for his casting were also responsible for what I consider to be one of the absolute worst superhero casting decisions ever. Only goes to show that no matter how good you are at your job, sometimes you just miss the mark.

Which was the worst one that you're talking about there? For KingPin and Punished we're looking at close to 10/10 with Cox breathing down their necks. Bullseye top notch too.

I am assuming they mean Finn Jones. Just a guess.

Oh. I had assumed it was different people responsible for that. I thought he meant on the DD show. When it comes to Scott Buck I don't even know if something like that counts as bad going by his standards of aiming for an undefeated 100% cancellation record!

Yup, I mean Finn Jones. I had to double check as well, but apparently every season of all of the Netflix shows have had the same casting directors. But of course I have no doubt the showrunners for each show have a big influence on who they cast, so I can't put the blame for that particular slip-up only on the casting directors shoulders. Scott Buck is just as much to blame there, if not even more so than the casting directors.

But yeah, casting for Daredevil, specifically, has been perfect since day one. That includes Bernthal as Frank Castle. Right down to the likes of side characters such as Wesley, Leland Owsley, Vanessa and even Turk. All of them are great actors and perfect for their parts. There isn't a single bad egg in the basket. I know a lot of people might disagree, but even Elodie Yung as Elektra was perfect casting to me. I mean, c'mon, SCOTT GLENN as STICK! To me, that was on par with casting D'Onofrio as Fisk in the camp of "actors that were born to play this character".

I'd even add Melvin to that list. I enjoy every second of that giant manchild.

My policy is...if in doubt, blame Buck. :D:

Good point. Outside of the highest profile guys, Wesley and Vanessa were absolutely top notch. Such a shame Wesley couldn't have been in the show longer, and Vanessa couldn't have had more this season. Stick also was perfect. Always loved when he used to drop back in.

Btw I just noticed that you've only joined the Hype recently. Welcome!! And I like your posts here, great that we're already having an enjoyable discussion. Hope you stick around

I love that guy. Wish I could help him out somehow. Always in such a difficult situation. :csad:

Well, I've been lurking for quite some time and I even had an older account with a different handle (and I mean a much older account, like over ten years... I think I've been here in some form or another ever since Batman Begins and the first couple Raimi Spider-Man films). Even though I posted from time to time, I just never been very active and only had a handful of posts to show for on that account. Since the forums got a makeover recently, I decided to start a new account from scratch.

But thanks for the welcome anyway, even if it's actually a welcome back. I appreciate it.

The last series I watched was Defenders. Do I need to watch the other before going into DD s3?

I would say no. Defenders is the only one that really ties into and affects what happens in S3.

Elodie Yung was the perfect Elektra. Her first appearance in Matt’s apartment still sticks with me and it’s the voice I hear whenever I read her in the comics now.

I still recall reacting to her stylized delivery of "Hello, Matthew" in the trailer like :woo:. I've had issue with some of her storylines, but love the characterization.

That “Hello, Matthew” still gives me goosebumps. I don’t know if it’s because of how bad Jennifer Garner was as the character before but it was such an exciting moment to see a comic accurate Elektra on screen for the first time.

Elektra was awesome in both Daredevil and The Defenders, specially in the later she seemed totally out of this world, like she was not totally "alive" yet, good performance and character.
