Daredevil reboot: official discussion thread - Part 2

I heard a rumor that if Fox doesn't get it started by this fall, the rights go back. Hopefully with the director leaving, they've just given up on DD.

X Men: First Class isn't as good as everyone is making it out to be... I really didn't like it. Other than Fassbender and the other guys performances as Magneto and Charles Xavier, the movie sucked.

All Fox is going to be doing from now on is making movies to retain rights to keep the money flowing in. That is NOT what I want. I want these characters to go to a company that RESPECTS the characters. One where its not about retaining rights.

I haven't seen anything from Marvel Studios to indicate they would have done a better job than Fox did with First Class.

I think they'd fast track it before they let the rights expire. Just like Sony did with GR2.

Or like Lionsgate with Punisher:WZ. Or maybe they'll take a good long look at both of those disasters and decide DD's just not worth it anymore. Better to focus on FF and X-Men

i hope joe carnahan(The Grey,Narc,Smoking Aces) replaces Slade

he'd be perfect narc specifically is very street centric

Hmm burnt out on Miller? Impossible! :P
Well, maybe more like burnt out on Miller adaptations, I guess.

If you'd like to see a new DD story on the big screen, what villains, themes, characters, and such would you want them to touch upon?
I'd much rather see a DD TV show than another movie, as I think he would be better served by the more in-depth approach that just can't be done in a two-hour film.

BUT, if I was the decision maker on a new film...

No reboot. Just another film that could be seen as a sequel or a new entity, totally up to the viewer. I am sick of seeing origins over and over, and there's nothing about Matt's world that can't be woven into the fabric of the story rather than showing it all explicitly again.

Even though I decried Miller, I'd actually like a story a fair bit like Born Again...Matt's world gets turned upside down by Fisk. I would keep Fisk in jail, as I think it would be a great, unusual approach to the villain to have him locked away for the duration of the film.

I'd have it set after Foggy has learned that Matt is DD, so that he has at least one real ally. Urich is not enough of an emotional back-up for the kind of torment I would have Matt would go through as his life is slowly picked apart.

I would also have Nelson & Murdock embroiled in a very high-profile case that involves a number of known bad guys. When Matt's life first starts to crumble, his assumption is that it is due to the case, only learning later that Fisk is behind it. This would help make it a mystery and I prefer DD stories that have a strong Matt-at-work element, not just DD running around.

Sorry if that was a bit rambling, but you asked! :)

I've never really laid down specifics before. This is just what would tickle my fancy right now. In a year, I might prefer something different.

Avengers? It's ironic how everyone thought it was going to be "Iron Man and friends" and yet it ends up being the best superhero ensemble, while Fox has yet to produce an X-Men film that isn't "Wolverine/Magneto and friends".

^avengers is very shallow it had no depth or substance

magneto in bar scene had more tension, better acting and drama than anything in the avengers

No it's not, and bringing up a Magneto scene to prop up XFC just reinforces my point.

sorry many fan have overrated the avengers and it just gets annoying people act like it is the best superhero movie of all time and act as if it is a game changer lol

it lacks substance and has a paper thin plot

it is a fun, comedic, entertaining spectacle but nothing more it is not very intriguing does'nt tackling interesting themes or questions ,lacks subtlety and imagination it is very simple minded movie

it is just a big action film

dont get me wrong i still liked it but people overreact with it's praise

Sorry, but you are very wrong on both accounts.

Have to agree with the guy above me and say this is a poor way to judge a film. Avengers, while may seem silly/superficial, was an example of some master storytelling. There was a single character or scene that didn't belong in the film, hell I can't even remember any lines that when I heard them I thought didn't belong in the film. It extremely rare you get a film like that. Best superhero movie since Spiderman 2.

I wish I could get my story out there for them to do. As someone who wants to end up in the industry it'd be fantastic if I could have the chance to write or hell direct this feature. If I knew a way to contact Fox to make a pitch for the film I would - but alas I don't.

One day maybe...

I really dont know why they didnt do a sequel (a proper one, not Elektra) to the last movie, the DC was a really good film, watching it now its really gritty, dark and violent for a superhero movie. Marvel studios would never make anything like it, they cater to kids too much IMO.

But a real sequel to the old Daredevil movie could have been REALLY good, and its not like the movie didnt make bank.

Daredevil is a different property compared to the movies MS has already done. the movies done by MS are more fantastical and yes they tend to appeal to families and kids just because that's the nature of most comic book movies. But Daredevil is different, much less fantastical, more grounded and gritty, if they market DD as a grim and gritty film, then thats the kind of crowd its more than likely going to attract and appeal to.

I was really hoping that David Slade was going to be the guy. I freaking loved 30 days of night! Best vamp flick ever.

I have serious doubt that this film will ever go anywhere....other than back to MS.

Who should be the villains in the next DD movie? I wouldn't mind seeing Kingpin again, but I don't think they should use Bullseye again, at least not right away. I wouldn't mind seeing someone else, like Typhoid Mary or Purple Man. A gang war between Kingpin and Owl could also be interesting.

i would think Typhoid Mary and the Hand (Akuma ?) would be frontrunners.
followed by Bushwacker, Gladiator, Death-Stalker. The hand can tie into
the resurrection of Elektra should the director choose to exploit that.
the Owl and Silvermane sounds boring and doesn't sound too appealing, but
i can see where a crimeboss like Silvermane hires two of Daredevil's arch-enemies.

Because there apparently was mixed views about the original DD movie.
i myself asked several people about their impression of the DD film and heard comments such as they didn't like Ben Afflick's acting, they didn't like Afflick period, they didn't like the Kingpin being black, they thought DD's leather costume looked cheap and campy, they made Bullseye look corny, etc.

i actually liked DD, thought Afflick did a decent job as blind Matt Murdock.
and i thought Jennifer Gardner, Michael Duncan and Afflick did well in their
respective roles. i even thought the radioactive "radar " senses special effects of Daredevil/Murdock was really cool..

Elektra movie was a whole different matter altogether.
Very poorly done, IMO. But it surprisingly did well on DVD rentals/sales because i believe viewers like the Elektra character.
It is because of the Elektra effect that i wonder if they would opt more
for a reboot rather than a sequel.

I think the best approach and the way i've approached this is to have the story start off after Daredevil has been active for a few years and to have flashbacks towards the origin of the character.

One thing I've altered slightly about the origin in my script is that the truck in the accident contains toxic ingredients that are combined by the Kingpin to create a Mutant Growth Hormone of sorts. When this raw toxic material hits Matt and blinds him the combination alters him slightly which allows him to have these heightened senses.

I believe that Marvel Studios can produce a worthy DD film. People have been accustomed to the tone associated with the Bendis/Brubaker runs, which were unrelentingly bleak and depressing. But they forget that Miller's run (which started it all) effectively balanced the fun and the dark, with even the most darkest of times ultimately ending on a positive note. Then there's the Kesel and Kelly runs, which were more of the light-hearted swashbuckling affair, but had a mature take on interpersonal relationships.

I really hope they limit his origin to a condensed flashback and would like the hand to play a big role . Also wouldn't mind if they covered his martial arts and acrobatics training. His fighting really needs to be dynamic and shine as well as be shown as a top notch lawyer.

I hope they don't show the origin at all. Unless they do a TV show, in which case they can dole out bits of the origin whenever it's relevant.

Drew Goddard(Cabin In The Woods) expresses his love for DD and possible interest
"You're talking to a guy who had quotes from Daredevil painted on his wall while growing up. Even when I was 18, I still had the blood red door with the, 'I have shown him that a man without hope is a man without fear'. That was what I loved and so it's the sort of thing that if we can find the right project, I would love to do it. They have most of the stuff that was on my walls as a kid. These conversations always happen, but until anything's official, who knows? I definitely put it out there that I love all of these characters. I haven't really thought about it too much in terms of how to make a movie. Like everyone else, I love 'Born Again'. That was just seminal work for me, but everything that Frank Miller did on Daredevil is like the Bible to me."

So is he on the short list? Doesn't seem like an actual confirmation to me.
