Dark Souls - Prepare to die.

The two Gargoyles are the worst. :cmad: I can't even imagine getting close to beating them without the Drake Sword.

what is this Drake Sword? why is it such a good sword? and how soon can you get it?

You can get it fairly early in the game, just after the first non-tutorial boss and the dragon/fire bridge mentioned on the last page:
Once you are underneath the bridge and the dragon, you can get into a position to see its tail. If you shoot it's tail with around 20 arrows, the tail will fall off and you get the Drake Sword.

The sword has 200 damage (as opposed to the 80 damage for most of the starting weapons), and only requires 16 strength to use. So it's a very powerful early weapon that does not scale with stats so later on it will not be as useful.

There are a lot of hidden weapons like that. If you beat the tutorial boss the first time he jumps down, without running away like you normally would, you get its giant hammer as a reward. The trick there is you have to basically beat him bare handed, because normally you run away and collect your weapons first.

Are there multiple chances to beat the tutorial boss, unlike in Demon Souls? Idk if the tutorial boss in Demon Souls dropped anything cool cuz I never even got it to 3/4 health, but it took 10+ minutes to get to, so I didn't try all that often.

Also, are the # of uses for magic that you can use between lighting bonfires reasonable? In the videos I've seen soul arrow was at 30, while the short-range fireball was at minues-10.

For those who haven't read this flame bait article on IGN (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1196439p1.html), do you agree with any of their points? I'll skim it and offer my opinion if anyone comments.

Last question before my rant; does everyone consider it a better game than the original? It's clearly prettier and more hardcore/varied/you name it than DeS, but so was God of War II, and I prefer the first one in that series as well.

Even though this game looks like it will be more satisfying in the long run as compared to Skyrim, the only reason I will get it first is because I refuse to pay full price for Skyrim, AND full price for all the DLC... or buy the game all over again when the "finished version" comes out (I will try to no longer type/say GOTY version because that's just marketing ********, and cuz I like quotes and air quotes:woot:). Heck, even if I decided that my one game purchase this year was Dark Souls, I'd still have to stop playing RDR and RE5 to beat the original. I'm only at the boss who multiplies and resurrects herself atm. I can't play DeS for very long I think because I'm like someone else in this thread, I do love challenge but I love story too, and Demon Souls gives you no real story. Even Doom 3 had a more involving story, and that game is as contrived and stereotypical as it gets.

If only I had a gaming PC, I could play what looks like will be my favorite RPG ever, The Witcher 2. It might not have a gigantic open world or even reach double digits when it comes to spell count, it still appears to have an epic story, as well as epic (no flaming, the epic challenge in the Souls series is all caps) challenge.

- You have to kill the tutorial-boss in order to advance the game. He only drops the special weapon if you kill him right away, though.

- I still do not have any magic, so I'm not sure. But I go back to bonfires so often that I doubt the magic will feel so limited.

- I never picked up Demon's Souls, but I know a fair amount about it. Gameplay wise they are very similar, but I think the open world aspect of Dark Souls is way better than the sectioned off nexus style of the previous game. I also really like the bonfire concept.

Life's A ***** , And Then You Die: 45 Hours With Dark Souls

If I had to sum up the emotion that Dark Souls elicits in a single word, I’d choose “satisfaction." There are any number of immensely frustrating encounters to be had here, but with a few more levels or an upgraded weapon, or a bit more practice with the combat system, you’re going to overcome the challenges you face, and when you do, the feeling is unlike anything that any other contemporary game can offer. This is a game that demands skill on the part of its players, to a degree that is almost unparalleled, but rewards that skill with moments of triumph so sublime that I was often moved to actually yell in triumph. Dark Souls offers you a brutal, uncompromising, and downright lonely world, but the act of conquering it is utterly unique.

Anyone know where one can get a bow and some arrows?

The merchant in Undead Burg sells them. From the bonfire go down the stairs to the right and then make the next left. Break the boxes on the roof with the 2 shielded guys, he is down there.

I didn't know about the drake sword, how did you find out about it?

There was an IGN video for it.

So I'm having a lot of fun with Dark Souls. I defeated 6 bosses, I upgrade the winged spear to +7, I rescued some guy from a barrel and in return he gave me access to pyromancy spells, I fell down a hole in the sewers and got cursed which I then had to trek a long way and pay 3000 souls for an item to un-curse me, and I am still nervous as hell to press forward. I definitly still feel at the mercy of the game, and even though I can take out most of the early section guys in 1-2 hits, one mistake and you're still boned.

Such a weird, fun game.

Amazon is an awesome company. People who ordered the CE but had it delayed due to low supply or were sent the standard edition instead were calling/emailing to complain and Amazon has been giving $20 cedits to them as an apology.

I ordered the standard edition on Monday and got it on Wednesday, and out of the blue I get an email saying they were sorry they couldn't upgrade me to the CE and gave me the $20 credit. :cwink:

I very much want to play this game, but at the same time, I know that I'm not a very "skilled" gamer, so I wont have much success with this game.

You know, it kind of bugs me when people say things like that. Yes, the Souls games are difficult, but I personally feel like they're challenging in such a way that most people could get a handle on and enjoy them if they wanted to. They don't require exacting precision or reflexes, they're more about "playing smart"; being cautious and using a little bit of common sense.

Yea i agree with Soapy. The gameplay isn't that difficult. I mean You have an attack, a strong attack and a block and thats all ya really need to know. I think the most difficult thing for newcomers is the lack of instruction. The game just tosses you in and says, have at it. You deff have to treat each encounter with respect tho.

Yeah I don't consider myself very skilled and I gave this game a go and it's not really too hard. If you're careful than its not bad at all. At first I wasn't a huge fan of the game but now that I've been playing it a bit, I'm really starting to like it.

Yes I agree. Right now thats my only complaint. I had no idea what was going on or what I was suppose to. I rented the game so I had no instruction booklet. It was really frustrating in the beginning but it gets much easier as you go a long.

hey guys, I'm glad you are all enjoying the game. I'm still on the fence.....lol

I did have a quick question, though.

when I watched that Giant Bomb quick look video, it seems you start out in a dungeon but with a "burnt flesh" look. you look nothing like what you create in the CC.

do you retain that "burnt flesh" look throughout the entire game? or, is there some way you can restore your normal look?

The "burnt flesh" from the video is during the tutorial where your character is dead, you never look that messed up again. After that you look really skinny and wrinkly, that is how your character looks when they are "hollow". To restore your normal look you must use Humanity at a bonfire to reverse the hollowing, which turns you human (how you looked in CC).

Being human opens the game up more for the online and makes the loot drops more frequent. You can put down call signs for help, or summon other people. It also leaves the game open to invasion from another player who can come and kill you.

So far I have only used human form to summon the helpful NPC before the Gargoyle fight, he saved my ass real good. But you will spend most of the game hollow looking thing because Humanity is rare and death is not, but it won't really matter because you rarely see yourself without armor on.

hey thanks!!

so, you spend most of the game NOT looking the way you created your character in CC ( because you're skinny/wrinkly in hollow form )?

I know you'll be armored most of the time.....but I'm not sure how I feel about that........

Ok now I'm stuck in blighttown, I've been searching for a way to progress further but to no avail, idk what to do

I'm in Blighttown now too, It's intricate and confusing but I don't think I'm lost. Did you make it to the bonfire on the bridge? I found a fog door after that and quit before going through it.

No I haven't found a bonfire yet, I don't know where to go to progress everywhere I go seems to be a dead end

Just keep an eye out for ladders, either up or down. You're basically heading in a straight line.

There's also at least 1 occasion where you have to break the wood/barrels and jump to the lower ledge behind them.

Hmm, I think I was misled as to what kind of skill was involved in this game. In that case, I think I could probably get a grasp of it. I know Demon Souls is dirt cheap right now, do you think I'd be better off getting that game first? Or do you think Dark Souls would be the better experience for a newcomer?

I actually haven't played Dark Souls yet, I want to finish Demon's Souls first, but I've heard that Dark Souls is slightly easier on newbies. Then again, if you're really that unsure about it, it might be smarter to go with the cheaper option first. Less risk.
