Darthphere Presents: Geeks with Hammers, the Home and Garden thread.

Yeah, how do they know you're not some drawer-back fetishist who made the whole thing up just to score some quick drawer backs to feed your freaky sexual needs?

Actually, WomP made a noob mistake. You always check to see if all the parts are there before building it. I mean, most instruction manuals will tell you:

Step 1: Lay out all the pieces.

Noob.

But.. it's like a comic book!

Maybe I'm buying the wrong stuff at IKEA? I don't have this mentality at all. I have a ton of antiques that were passed down to me, so I only use IKEA to supplement them. Wall shelves and whatnot, love my floating shelves! :hrt: Not major pieces of furniture.

I went to IKEA recently and they have some nice stuff. Some of their nicer furniture though is far too expensive for something you have to assemble yourself. Like the HEMNES series. Nice stuff but you can probably find something similar for the same price or cheaper without the hassle of actually having to build it.

I kinda hate how I bought a $50 task chair at Target, with hopes that it would outlast my previous chair that lasted about a year or two. but the chair didn't make it past 5 months and I had to buy another one for $20 which seems a lot sturdier.

Those chairs are a waste of money. You're better off buying a comfortable dining room chair.

I've actually been starting to consider buying a folding chair instead, but I had a leather one once where the leather ripped and it just looked ugly after a while.

Darth Pro-Tip: You're better off buying a solid and nice dining room chair for your desk or work area. Task chairs and folding chair break far too easily and are real money drains.

How about a stool? My mom recently got a smaller kitchen table set that has two wooden stools, and she got rid of the other, older chairs that we used to have, although I kinda hated those.

A stool provides no back support so it would limit you in that way. Unless you like having back pain.

Real men don't read instructions. They figure it out for themselves.

Which probably means that 'missing' drawer back is serving an entirely unintended purpose somewhere else in the table.

I think you and Erz have the same idea, but you started in different places. Sounds like he started with some of their cheaper stuff like a cheap kitchen table and chairs set and now he's working to replace it with nicer items. You've already got the nice items so you're just looking for ways to piece in other items around it.

*Looks through thread*

Needs more Scott McGillivray. :o

I actually like his show Income Property but come on, he's no Mike Holmes.

I may go look for it. But OneDisturbedSOB made an awesome Superman coffee table design. I wish someone would make it.

I think I enjoy Income Property better. Don't get me wrong, nothing beats Mike Holmes tearing down a room and *****ing on the previous contractor's work, pointing out all the flaws, but I really enjoy seeing a place get flipped on IP to where it's completely unrecognizable and 10x better than it was before.

Yeah I can see that. Holmes on Homes/Holmes Inspection was more about fixing other people's mistake so there's no real mystery on how a room is going to look after. Pretty much the same with better stuff behind the walls.

Exactly, yeah. I'll learn more watching Holmes 'cause that's the really the focus, pointing the out and correcting mistakes, but Income is more entertaining fro me to watch. Especially when they get into creating the layout of the property and the challenges that can come along with that. Space issues usually.

Yeah, it's like how are we going to take this ****** basement and make it an awesome apartment.

I hung a poster on the wall today. I even put the 3M hook thing on the wall myself

Nice post! Last week i did give the entire floor a last cleaning with a pad soaked in mineral spirits to be certain the dust and residue was totally off. I would say that the hillyards product is absolutely the best for finishing, imo. Thanks for sharing.

I'm actually a very good carpentress...I put together a great deal of the furniture in our apartment.

My next "project" is adding interesting wall decor...I want unique artwork, and am really not sure where to look (it needs to be affordable). I've had a few picture frames that I've been meaning to arrange. Has anyone tried that removable sticky photo frame backing to hang frames on the wall? Does it hold well? The kind I bought is supposed to hold up to 12 pounds, but I'm skeptical.

Erzette found this great art work from Home Goods.

It was like $40 already in a nice polished nickel frame.

Another time, she bought a bunch of Yankees stuff when some sort of art vendor came into the hospital.

We're looking to do a NY scheme in the hallway with stuff from art.com. Statue of Liberty, Governors's Island, Time's Square, Yankee Stadium.

What I also can recommend is going to AC Moore or Michaels and they have some photo collages that you can pick up.

I love Home Goods! Since I moved, there hasn't been one close by to shop at, but they're opening a store right down the road from me at the end of October. I'll definitely have to check for artwork when they open.

I have no scheme :csad: I'd like to find some cool comic art...I've been keeping my eye out when I go to Cons. Other than that, I like what I like, and I'll know what I want when I see it :oldrazz: I like trees and landscapes. I wouldn't be opposed to an interesting tapestry, either.
