Days of Future Past Days of Future Past News and Discussion - - - Part 48

Remember, directors and writers aren't free because producers and studios have the real power.

In the beginning, FC was a sequel to Wolverine Origins. Next, Singer wanted to do prequel in the 60 's. Vaughn was maybe pro reboot but Singer/Shuler weren't in the same page. If i am not wrong, they pitched X4/X5 to Fox during FC production. You can't reboot and try to make a sequel in same time.

Neither Fox or Singer/Shuler wanted a reboot so it 's maybe why Vaughn left the franchise.

Vaughn left because he wanted to do secret service before anyone else made a secret agent movie before him but he spoke about looking forward to working with the huge cast for DOFP and asked fox to put it back so he could do secret service first and they said no so he walked

in terms of what we got with FC how much could you really say was vaughn turning it into a reboot? he recreated the opening from X1 frame by frame, they had the chess games between eric and charles which seating position alone almost mirrored them from X1/X2, the cerebro effect was the same, mystiques effect was the same and much of the powers respected X1 and X2 like charles freezing people so Vaughn spent to much time respecting singers films to turn it into a reboot in the end

and if you read this 2 page interview from 2011 of bryan singer talking about the decisions he made on alot of FC which were james and michael, the hellfire club, beast and mystique, the 60s setting, the title, the story ect ect

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2011/04/20/x-men-first-class-bryan-singer-interview

and when asked if bryan felt it was odd coming onboard to direct DOFP he said

Singer talks about his involvement with X-Men: First Class and dismisses the notion that he's picking up the pieces left by Matthew Vaughn. Singer says he's been involved in the X-Men all along.

Singer: It would be [weird to direct Days of Future Past] if I didn’t write the story for X-Men: First Class. I wrote the story to that movie and I produced it and I was instrumental in the casting, in design and involved in the post-production, so I was part of that movie. I initiated that movie and originated it so in that way, and worked with Matthew and I was the one who actually hired Matthew so in a way I feel like I’m not completely entering someone else’s franchise. I’m entering one that he executed wonderfully, but one that I was also part of.

I think Vaughn likes to have total control but it wasn't possible with X Men. IMO, it's maybe why he choose Secret Service over DOFP. Kingsman is his baby whereas X men is Singer's baby.
Like you said, Singer was very present in FC production.

Well vaughn has spoken fondly about working on X-Men so i don't think he left because his needs were not met tbh, at least from what he has said in interviews anyway

JEM might be on to something. I don't think that Vaughn is a director who likes to be told what to do much which is why he sprung to change some of the aesthetic for FC.

Well it has to be remembered that vaughn was originally gonna direct X3 which wasn't gonna be a reboot but a sequel to singers films so i ain't sure we can say he was only willing to do X-Men if it was a reboot

and he walked away from X3 because he wanted more time to make the film and wanted a longer story wasn't it? so yeah there is some truth to vaughn wanting his own way but i ain't sure you could say vaughn who claimed DOFP was 95% of his story anyway walked because he wanted to have his own take on X-Men

Oh no I'm just talking about the reasoning for leaving the franchise for DOFP. I think that it was just not conducive to his creative process and he did leave X3 for Fox trying to have to much creative control so it makes sense to me.

FC had connections to earlier films.Reboots are Casino royale, batman begins, man of steel, and new terminator.Star Trek 2009 and DOFP are time travel causing reboots designed to try to get fans to believe past establishments of series are still relvent.

Star Trek 2009 leaves maybe enterprise still in cannon except for terrable series finale.Aside from that everything trekkers knew from 1966 to 2002 Is gone.

DOFP leaves only FC.

They never really solved any contunity problems with DOFP.They just erased everything else from 2000 to 2013 except from FC.

I don't understand after DOFP the reasoning to do another wolverine film.It can't be wolverine 3 since origins and the wolverine with trilogy has been erased. And if Hugh Jackman only wants to play wolverine one more time then what's the point of film after most of Jackman's films have been erased.DOFP would have been far better as his final
film since that film erased the non-FC films.

Now with superman returns it was made clear from get go it was ignoring superman III and IV.

I am not going to get Into the studio wars.

to each there own.. but i think you're taking the definition of a reboot way too black and white.

Star Trek and FC are all reboots and prequels in my book. They arn't complete reboots.. but they also arn't just prequels either...

they managed to merge the two.

So which Wolverine will the next solo film feature?

The future version, after he woke up in his future body in 2023?

Or the past version after he was rescued by Mystique in 1973?

Audiences will definitely be confused if the fans are.

Like I said, a third solo movie is a bad idea.

It's apparently going to be after 2023 version since Patrick stewart may be in it.Still i agree bad idea.If jackman isn't prepared to keep playing wolverine with younger cast just make DOFP his swan song.

There are rumors fox showed vaughn the door on DOFP so Singer could regain the reins.Secret Servive was his conslation price.Supossily it didn't look like Vaughn could get the original cast back for DOFP like Singer could.

Vaughn in 2010/2011 told conflicting stories depending on who he was talking to.That's way online there was debate if FC was total reboot or prequel.

I'm guessing that, for continuity's sake, W III will follow from DOFP's new future. It would make sense to start there to conclude the Jackman/OriginalCast run with one last chapter.

why would 5 be? 4 had the cast in it too? 4 is kinda a reboot considering it rejuvenated the franchise. it's half reboot/half sequel imo

And you do know that Fast and Furious 4 is one of the least well-reviewed of the series? Heck, Wolverine Origins and The Last Stand had better Rotten Tomatoes rating than that movie.

While First Class became the least grossing X-Men film in America when it was released. So what rejuvenation are you referring to? Critically or box-office wise, if you are talking both, then both films failed in 1 part.

And obviously, when people bring up the word "reboot", they are referring to the continuity, not rejuvenating the series at the box-office or quality.

Well we heard Vaughn say why he left several times in interviews he wanted to do the secret service before anyone else did a similar movie and fox wouldn't push DOFP back so he could do both so the rumors were not true

And to say Vaughn wouldn't be able to get the OC back is silly, it's like thin Bryan and the OC together out of pure loyalty

to say fox and the OC only wanted to do it if bryan singer directed is absurd

well technically DOFP future ending was a sorta last chapter for the Orignal Cast, Wolverine 3 would be more like a final chapter for wolverine since its his last Solo movie creating a 3 film trilogy even if they don't directly link up 3 films are still a number for a trilogy

Can't remember but at the end of DOFP did it tell us when Logan woke up? Was it 2023 or present day?

DOFP just came out on Sky On Demand in the UK today. Haven't seen it since the cinema, can't wait to see how the re-watchability holds up :woo:

Edit: I enjoyed it so much more the 2nd time around. I think they got the balance perfect between past and future scenes. I also appreciated Warpath much more this time around, probably the 2nd best mutant fighting in the future besides Blink.

McAvoy as Xavier is by far my favourite comic book character at the moment. He plays it so well.

I still have a few qualms, notably how Quicksilver is too fast, but the action scenes made up for that. My other criticism is that it seemed a bit cliche that the future changed as soon as J-Law dropped the gun.

Overall I'd up it from a 7.5/10 to a 8.5/10. Probably on par, if not better than The Winter Soldier now for me.

Also it struck me how Wolverine said to Charles in the past something like "Promise me you'll find us, use your powers, lead us,
Storm, Scott, Jean, remember their names." And they've exactly followed that in casting the young versions for Apocalypse.

Watching this for the fourth time makes me realize how I wished Fox had made Origins an actual kid James story with Logan bookends.

So much of this movie is non-supersuits and relies on characters and their motivations.

Just finished watching the film, haven't seen it since theaters and still love it! For me it's a tie between X1 and DOFP, I just have a big soft spot for X1, it's what got me back into comics way back when, again massive soft spot.
