DC Could Learn Lessons From Marvel's Movie Strategy

BTW guys its Catwoman, not Cat Woman (even though halle's wasnt catwoman anyways)

I agree with this article, but the title should be "WB Could Learn Lessons From Marvel's Movie Strategy". DC really needs their own studio and more creative control instead of WB execs messing things up.

Great article! I hope DC finally decides to do what Marvel has been doing. I'd love to see movies around Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, The Question, Flash, Wonder Women and various others. DC could be Gold if they just plan everything right.

I saw Halle's as more of a Elseworlds than anything else.

The best thing WB could do IMO is to hire someone who knows the comic genre and how to work with the fans(both mainstream and comic)to see what the true pulse is. :ww: is due for her shot but WB seriously tempts fate by continuing their current policies on comic genre movies. Neil Adams has even said as much, even though WB used his :batty: for Begins. IMO, bringing in new directing talent with an eye on what works more than what sells the most action figures is where they need to head.

DC need to break away from The WB and form an alliance with Marvel to create great cinema fantasies based on comic book stories.
I know that's a pipe dream, but so what. :whatever:

eh, the first part yes, the second part no, marvel+dc=heck no! theyre competitors

I think Warner Bros. should give more leeway to make DC their own production company and let them have creative control. WB could still co-finance and distribute DC's films (like what Legendary did with BB and SR), but let DC choose the projects they want to develop with the right filmmakers.

That's all Marvel has done, except make various distribution deals with other studios to distribute them. All the WB needs to do is have a similar arrangement with DC, but with the caveat to let them distribute and market DC's films.

Right, there has gotta be some producer that steps up to the plate like Avi Arad and Kevin Feige have done for Marvel. Or at the very least, Paul Levitz has gotta be consulting more with WB to get everything off the ground.

Yea that would be so great if they did that.

Those guys are having problems selling comic books. Why would you want them to make movies? DC's purpose in all of this is as the idea people. They come up with the story lines and source material and the WB makes the films.

Nope DC was actually several different companies that combined in the 30s. WB bought the company in the 60s or 70s.

Here's the only strategy DC needs.

RELEASE A MOVIE THAT ISN'T SUPERMAN OR BATMAN.
Amen. Also they need to stop using the same villians over and over again.:yay:

Looks like Marvel could learn a thing or two from the WB. Rumor has it that TDK may have an Oscar written on it.

This is one thing i don't really get. No offense to Heath Ledger (RIP). I know he's very talented but of all the performances in the comic book movies why should his be the one to get an Oscar nomination or win? Is it really that good or is it because he's no longer with us? People tend to show much more respect towards the dead than the living. The same seems to happening here granted some people were talking Oscar before his tragic passing.:o

I started hearing rumblings about a possible Oscar nomination right after the film wrapped.

I mean, you do have executives at Marvel who have a hand in all of the films based on Marvel property (Kevin Feige, Stan Lee, Avi Arad, etc.).There's no reason why DC shouldn't have its own producers have a stake in DC films produced by Warner Brothers. All I'm saying is that Warner Brothers could start a DC production company and let the producers there do their own thing, but that WB would have the final say on whether to greenlight them or not.

Yea many of us had thought of that but it isnt likely thing to happen since WB owns Dc comics and they probably dont see any point in making a separate production company to make their dc films when they have WB to do it for them.

The only real difference is that the various rights to DC's properties are divided among several producers. Joel Silver and Michael Uslan in particular.

To me, the only real issue with that is when WB lets a producer hold on to the rights too long without making concrete progress.

Yea they should have a set time limit if the producers dont do anything with the rights within the given time period like say 5 years then it should revert back to DC/WB studio so it can be given to someone else who will get it moving around.

Why should he get an Oscar nomination? Maybe because The Dark Knight goes beyond being a simple 'comic book movie' (I hate that term) and explores deeper and more mature themes than other films before it, giving rise to greater character depth and portrayal than ever before in the superhero genre, the very type of films Academy members love.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. It could just be because Ledger delivers a performance deserving of accolades, whether those be awards or otherwise.

The people you named are in charge of Marvel Studios. They are movie guys first (Avi Arad is actually a business man who used to run a toy company before he came to Marvel Entertainment), not comic book people. Stan Lee is just a figurehead for marvel nowadays. There are actually no comic book people running Marvel Studios. I don't think you are going to be realistically successful in the movie business with comic book or graphic novel people running your studios. It makes more sense to have people with a background in the business doing that.

Yeah... but it doesn't hurt if business people do know their DC comics too. Barring certain superhero rights held by producers, it wouldn't hurt if some of the Legendary Pictures producers were put in charge of a DC Films production company. Legendary did co-finance and produce Batman Begins, Superman Returns and The Dark Knight along with other, profitable non-DC films for WB.

Even Legendary Pictures is not that stupid to put all their eggs into one basket. Note that they have only been in business for 3 years now and have only co-produced and co-financed about 21 pictures to date (only 9 have been released so far). Out of the 21 pictures, only 5 are comicbook based films (thats less than 25%). They don't necessarily make blockbuster films, but associate themselves with projects that are through their financing arm. They also admit on their website that they benifit from "the the scale of Warner Bros. production capacity as well its extensive marketing and global distribution infrastructure." It's not all Legendary, but the WB behind production of all these hits. Like I said before, DC is right where they want to be, because they are under a company whose business is making movies.

Thanks to industry politics, a marginalized readership and limited distribution.

This is not just a problem DC has. They're doing quite well compared to most of the industry.

Why would you want them to make movies?

No, but they should have more involvement.

Unlike most of WB they actually know the characters they're making stories about.

DC's purpose in all of this is as the idea people.

Which they do.

They come up with the story lines and source material

Most of it WB ignores or ****s up adapting in live action.

and the WB makes the films.

It's better but WB still hasn't gotten a successful serial super-hero DC adaption which aren't Batman and Superman yet.

Not that Batman or Superman haven't been severely mistreated at times.

Same here.

It takes something really special to get an Oscar nomination but sometimes getting one has a lot do with hype (critics, studio, director the actors' praise). Just look at some of the cast of BB/TDK cast who've never even been nominated for Oscars or Golden Globes.....Christian Bale and especially Gary Oldman have really been overlooked in that regard IMO.
I wouldn't necessarily say that. It could just be because Ledger delivers a performance deserving of accolades, whether those be awards or otherwise.
I'd love for Ledger's performance to be that good. It's just that i feel people's judgement may be a bit clouded so i therefore won't jump on the Oscar bandwagon just yet.:cwink:

I have faith that we will get to see one of DC other major heroes in the next 2 years.
