DC May '09 Solicitations

^Thank you, Franklin.

Last year, I bought more DC comics than I have in over a decade. I'm glad to see Hal in GL (until recently, I hadn't bought a single GL comic in ages) and I will be buying the new stories featuring Barry (I hadn't been buying Flash on a regular basis, either). I bought all of Geoff Johns's Action Comics stuff, I've got a couple of trades lined up for some good stuff I missed out on, and really the list just goes on.

They're bringing back all of this old stuff...it's good, quality work, and entertaining to read. They're not charging you thru the nose for it like those other guys, and they're taking good care of the characters. Those are the things that matter to me, as a fan. Personally, I really like what they're doing with some of this stuff. I'm more into comics right now than I have been for a long time.

IT's not that im that close minded. Im just saying it seems like the general reaction on THESE boards in particular are disgruntled with the need to shove everything back to the silver age. Yes the books are selling well but you can't just alienate the 10 years you just had of people keeping your damn company afloat.

To be honest I do feel alienated by DC, not because of the way they have been treating my favorite characters, because they don't even seem like they want to appeal to the generation of Wally and Kyle fans that bought there books.

So the 10 odd people who are disgruntled on this board makes you think that everyone is disgruntled?

As for alienating your fanbase, how do you think we felt 10 years ago? I did the only thing I could. I stopped buying Green Lantern for 10 years and now my comic is coming back. Maybe you should do the same.

I'm sorry I don't want to see every book be tied to a event. Thats my point event driven market equals bland stories and even more bland heroes. I would like a more stories to be one issue tales than all these over expanding arcs. Its very annoying. Seems like after every 6 issue arc we get another and that is just bland after a while.

So stop reading DC / Marvel.

Well see now there is a problem, I can't really not read it because i want to know whats going on in the DC Universe I don't. Again going back to why we must have event driven books? It just gets tiring.

I did'nt say that I thought the people on this board represent everyone just that it seems that not alot of people agree with the backwards trend of going to the silver age again. Can you comprehend that?

So stop reading DC / Marvel.

Seeing as I still read a few DC books that are good and one Marvel book I see no pointin quitting, but i am expressing my opinion on the medium today. I mean is it so hard to write stories that all fit into one issue?

The anti-Silver Age sentiment is all over the internet, but the internet is a pretty small minority of the readership.

You really think its that little of the readership?

The sales would indicate that much. Or that a lot of the people online are giant hypocrites.

Well not really, DC are hardly rolling in high sales atm.

But the sales they are getting are from their most Silver Agey romps.

What "affect" is it having on the fans? They're buying the mags more than ever?

And believe it or not there are more fans of the 40 some odd years of Hal / Barry than the 10 years of Kyle / Wally.

Do the numbers.

Hal / Barry + 40 years = More Fans

Everyone acts like people over 30 don't buy comics anymore.

10 years of Wally.
lmao.gif

Does the rest of that post have any real evidence behind it or is it also you being selective about what you remember? Maybe there were a whole lot of Hal fans clamoring for his return. But I don't see how anyone can possibly claim that Barry has all that many more fans than Wally at this point.

If Flash: Rebirth is going to sell well, it's certainly not going to sell well on the merits of Barry Allen: guy who only ever became interesting when he died and no reader was really interested in bringing back. It's going to sell well based on the merits of it being a big story event, and on the merits of it aping Johns' prior Rebirth format.

So now Barry is boring? Wow. That's new. Seems like that revelation only happened when we found out he was coming back.

Honestly, all this crap about Silver Age retread is derived more from bitterness and the fact that DC is just not "post crisis" anymore...and that's what bothers me about most complainers...they're not complaining because of regressing....they're complaining because their era isnt in the spotlight anymore, and frankly, post crisis wasnt all that good anyway, imo.

I've heard that for years already.

As it stands though, Wally was Flash for well over 20 years. Barry had 30, just ten years more. We're not talking about just a bunch of fans here. We're talking about an entire generation of fans that actually grew up with Wally as the Flash.

Y'know, I could always kind of understand the complaints about Hal. He got 10 years more. His downfall is 'recent'. But Barry? Damn, man. They should've just left him dead. It didn't preclude him from an interesting story or two once every few years.

Well I'm tired of placating your group. Barry is coming back. Deal with it. The Green Lantern mags are selling like hotcakes and I'm betting Barry's will too.

I think I'll buy three copies each month. One for me, one for Brian, and one for Corp.

We're dealing with it, but that doesn't mean we can't ***** about it. Hell, people *****ed about Hal forever, people are going to ***** about OMD forever. People *****, it's what they do, until they finally get their wish. Then we'll have have to deal with *****ing when Wally returns to main Flash status. It's how the world works

i truly doubt wally will be main flash again...i truly do

Placating? Frack, what's the problem with just letting a character go? I was willing to let Wally go when, after 20 years, it seemed like he was ready to 'settle' down and Bart was going to take over.

Bruce, Barry, and Hal are contemporaries and colleagues. If Bruce is still around after 3 Flashes have come and gone then obviously something is wrong with the timeline.

Don't I get enough of that **** with my namesake?

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Really? You're complaining about age discrepancies? Those are basically a given in comics that have run for 60+ years. Reed and Ben still supposedly fought in World War II together.

...and didn't I complain about that?

DC was supposed to be "above" this crap. But you're changing the subject.

When Bruce Wayne goes down then it's time for the Next Generation. I don't want Ryker hanging around with Kirk except in a time travel episode.

Besides the fact that I'd rather see Bats' legacy get going too, this is a rather odd argument. Barry dies in the line of duty after a few years, Wally takes over for another few years and then Bart hardly gets the time to do anything. We're not exactly talking about the Flash legacy being dropped at the dime of the hat every few years.
