DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 3

Heh, that's almost exactly how I described it word for word to my non-comic reading friend when he saw a copy lying around.

Bucky's death frankly felt like Fraction was like "Oh crap its been 3 issues and nothing worth while has happened and the villains don't feel like a real threat. Quick! Get Ed on the phone and tell him I'm offing Bucky and to go **** himself if he doesn't like it."

And it's that entire mentality that has made superhero comics a joke.

Plot? What plot? Bring on teh gore!

Absolutely. I mean I have nothing against a character dying here or there, there have been comic book deaths that have been well done, so long as they're good deaths and not just cheap shock value. If you absolutely have to kill a character they should die heroically and not just as shock value and preferably at least at the hands of the writer that's working on their own series.

Bucky's death violated all of those completely, he just showed up and died for nothing, no heroic sacrifice, no "you go I'll hold them back as long as I can", just bam dead. Not to mention it was a cheap way to get Steve back to being Cap and predictable as hell. I think the day we got solicits for Fear Itself 3 everybody predicted Bucky would die, making him into one of the worthy would have at least been slightly surprising if not necessarily better.

And now Fraction is up on twitter thanking Brubaker for "giving me the ending to issue 3" when truth be told Brubaker probably knew there was nothing he could do since Marvel probably wanted Bucky dead from the beginning so they could get Steve back as Cap.

Well, they see these characters as fodder and not assets. That's why stuff like the DC big event kill list exists.

Please tell me that isnt a real thing :csad:

At this point it seems like it would be more sensible and take less time to make a list of characters they can't kill, especially at Marvel since it would seem almost nobody is off limits.

I don't know man.....Buck was "dead" for like 50 years. He could just as easily end up that way again.

^This.
^ this x a million for Barry Allen. Wally West was doing a great job as The Flash.
^this x infinity for Jason Todd as well. Wish the Joker would take antoher crowbar to him.

Some deaths are important in comics because they led to some growth for the character, and helped the reader understand the importance of their mission as well as the dangers behind it. Bucky, Barry Allen and Jason Todd's original deaths were major milestones in comics and should never have been changed.

Matt Fraction sounds like a hack. Shouldn't take three comics to move one plot point along. I've read novels with better pacing.

:hehhe:

It does pretty much sum up the plot of the story and all the tie ins

I think that is definitely what happened. Bucky was killed off just so Fraction could try to shock the readers and to try and make his villains look more dangerous

Brubaker himself is saying this was all part of his plan. Everyone just needs to calm down.

You go too far, ma'am. Avengers Academy's tie-in issue from last week was an intriguing look at what it means to send young people to die in war. And it was awesome.

I stand corrected Corp

I will have to check that issue out. Avengers Academy is always pretty darn good so I am not surprised the tie in is better than the others :)

How much continuity is being reset for this? Everything except Batman?

Which doesn't matter because it takes place a 1,000 years in the future.

True

Though given that its been rebooted about a hundred times before i be surprised that it wasnt rebooted again this time

Surprised and pleased

So how is Batman going to interact with the universe changing around him?

Same way he's been interacting. Only now he started the JLA and JLI and everything else.

We will probably see how Batman's relationships with other heroes have been affected by this relaunch in the JLA series Squirrel

The JLA series is supposed to be like a 5 years ago story of how the group got together and their origins, right?

Which will take place in the past apparently.

For the first arc anyway to reveal the teams new origin. Which must involve giant alien starfish in some way or it is not a proper origin :ninja:

And then the rest of it will probably take place in the present

Agreed

If a JLA origin story does not involve Aquaman punching a giant starfish it needs to GTFO

Tony Stark would like a word with these fellows.
