DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 5

I think somehow I just became a Madame, setting 'Nubs up with hookers

I knew it would happen someday

Batwoman - Loved it. With JH Williams III doing the art for this character again and partially writing it it's a good continuation from Rucka's awesome run. I very much like how the flow of this book was and how they explain what has recently happened with Batwoman prior to this. So it still can be read by a new reader and be enjoyable and they toss in just enough to make it awesome for someone like myself.

Demon Knights - Loved it. Anyone who loves fantasy should pick this up the art is beautiful and what Cornell plans to do with Jason Blood/Etrigan/Madame Xanadu is pretty interesting. Sadly I already knew that Cornell didn't plan to make The Demon rhyme which is fine--see what I did there? :oldrazz:--though he did change the words that transform him which was cool.

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. - Great read. I'm 100% new to the character and the mythos though from my understanding they are treating this as 100% new or something. I am intrigued and it gives a Hellboyish vibe in the concept of the Creature Commandos team and what they deal with--though I've only watched the Hellboy movies--but it also feels like its own thing. Part of it helps that the team consist of the classic 1940s monster movie creatures and I am very intrigued by what will go down. I particularly love Father Time's current form too. Badassery all around. Art is great too.

Green Lantern - Good read. This wasn't a title I felt I had to pick up before the relaunch until they revealed in interviews and such that we will finally eventually learn more about the Indigo Tribe. Not saying I'm not intrigued by the story with Sinestro and Hal--there is actually like 2 hilarious scenes with Hal--but at the same time my expectations were already set. So I guess I wasn't "wowed" since the content was already good. So this deserves a "Great read" perhaps.

I didn't have the "umph" I needed to get Justice League International last week because I heard what some of my friends and you guys said about it but got around to buying it anyway earlier this evening. Here is what I've got to say about it:

Justice League International - Good read. The art is real nice and I like some of the banter between the characters. I gotta say though what intrigues me the most is August General in Iron. Which is what intrigues me a lot about the title in general: there are plenty of lesser known characters that seem interesting with the concept of the UN putting a team together representing different countries. I probably enjoyed it a bit more than you guys because I have no JLI experience.

Still unsure if I want to read Deathstroke and/or Grifter at the moment.

I don't really understand buying the same comic with different covers.

I wish that they would make some Aquaman variants and preview them already if they do. If you are a big enough fan of a comic it justifies wanting a variant for at least a few issues unless each variant for each issue is stellar (then you would get them often).

I bought I think two Aquaman Varients for BD. They are awesome.

Mr. Terrific - In the words of Jay Sherman; "It stinks".

Here's why:

They really didn't change much he's a billionaire now instead of a millionaire but the wife and fetus still die he still becomes an atheist, multiple degrees, top 3 smart man in the DCU etc. he's still supposed to be Michael Holt but he just well isn't. The voice isn't right in this book.

Eric Wallace decides to make the whole thing about race as early as page 5. Then he has an exchange between Kara Zor-L err I mean "Karen Starr" & some black chick and again race this and race that. It was terrible to read cause a pet peeve of mine is that type of **** in comics.

On top of that the concepts presented here aren't interesting. Like his son from the future set up or the main plot about something affecting people's brains to the point of driving them manic and making them extremely blunt. This shouldn't be what a science superhero book should be like it should be way bigger than this but whatever. It's all so bland and uneventful that this will be my first drop.

Legion Lost - Pete Woods is one of my favorite artists. His Superman work has been second to none in terms of storytelling he's just really gifted and everything he did in the Supes books helped him cement himself as one of the strongest artists in DC's staple. So it's disappointing that he didn't ink this himself cause it ruined his otherwise spot on art in some pages.

I do like the legionnaires in this book though. Nicieza who has been off and on Winick style lately came through with a decent enough set up. I hated some of the exposition though like "Our legion flight rings aren't working but most of us could fly without them anyway" yeah no ****. I know it's to make it more new reader friendly but they could've gone about that in a different way. Otherwise it seemed to be hitting the ground running. They already have a villain in their midst. I do like the concept of the book and it was enough for me to stick around.

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. - Being spoiled by the art on Lemire's previous work with the characters in the Flashpoint tie-in I went "wtf is this scratchy mess?" while trying to process the art. Trying to figure out what exactly was going on in the 2 page panel of the creature commandos vs. the invading monsters was especially a big task.

I will say that even though I wish they had included Shrieve in there somehow it's still an interesting revamping of this entire concept. Keeping some Flashpoint stuff around. I liked the Ray Palmer cameo and I liked the fact that S.H.A.D.E. is now housed in a small orb that you have to teleport and shrink to get into. That's the type of outrageous stuff I love in my comic books. I loved the pacing of the book and look forward to seeing the Bride. So far the Dark books have been the best of the whole relaunch if you ask me.

read/bent/barf on/poop on/lick on one of the comics, while keeping the other comic (Variant) in it's bag/board untouched

Retailers report on how the DC relaunch is doing:

- Despite DC generously overprinting and retailers over ordering, it is still not enough to keep up with demand for most comic book stores.

- Most retailers will be returning very few, if any, of DC's returnable comics.

- Asides for a slight uptick for books based on major characters like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Spawn, new DC readers are not spilling over and checking out comics from other companies. Apparently the DC relaunch is clouding interest in other comics. One retailer has reported that some fans are giving up on Fear Itself and Spider-Island in favor of going totally DC.

- Sales continue to increase into week 3 of the relaunch.

- The titles that have the best fan reaction are: Action Comics, Justice League, Batgirl, Batman & Robin, Green Lantern, Detective Comics, Animal Man, Swamp Thing

Interesting.

If this works. I mean really works. We could see Marvel attempt to follow suit.

Pfft, he'll probably be one of the architects of the new continuity.

I don't know why they don't try and play up to these various writers strengths and put them on the books they would be best at. Fraction would own on a SHIELD or Nick Fury book. Not so good with superheroes.

I say keep Fraction on Invincible Iron Man and the Mighty Thor. While Invincible Iron Man has dragged a few times, it's been pretty damn good overall. And while Fraction's arc on Thor sucked, the Mighty Thor has been great.

Just don't let him write an event ever again.

The Mighty Thor has been decent and had some great moments. I'd take Gillen back in a heartbeat, though. Journey into Mystery, by contrast, has been issue after issue of utter excellence.

But, back on topic, Marvel's not following DC into a line-wide relaunch anytime soon. Nor should they. They'll sensibly wait a few months and watch the numbers on 90% of DC's relaunched series sink back down to where they were or lower, then assess how to boost a few titles to regain their usual market share dominance after that.

I'd honestly rather keep Gillen on Journey into Mystery. I found Gillen's follow up to JMS' Thor to be kinda dull, but I've really been loving his Journey into Mystery. It's the highlight of Fear Itself IMO. His take on Loki is just amazing.

Yeah, I'd prefer him to stay on JiM too if he couldn't swing both. But a non-Fraction writer on The Mighty Thor would really be ideal. At best, Fraction's just treading water. When the dumbfounding awesomeness of Asgardians vs. Galactus is over, all we'll be left with is his moronic, grunting excuse for a thunder god. Oh, wait, that's right--even that's going away. "Tanarus" indeed. :cmad:

I've been loving the Mighty Thor so far, hell, I even really liked Fraction's previous Thor works asides from his arc on the original Thor ongoing. So I'm willing to give him some leeway.

I don't want to see Gillen write both Thor books the same way I don't want Geoff Johns writing all four Green Lantern books or Scott Snyder writing the entire Batman line.

:whatever:
