DC to "Rebirth" in June - Part 2

No Titans on those teams. Interesting given the latest issue. I was hoping that maybe Dick might lead a team. Looks like the JL is still being hypocritical and playing mommy and daddy sidelining the b-team.

and I’m ok with Harley. I just don’t understand why they keep forcing Lobo down our throats.

Tell me why he would need Trunks?
And its not like he doesnt face enemies who can deal some damage even to a guy like Superman.
Doing what he does and not having some kind of protection armor would seem rather arrogant and short sighted to me.

I just dont see a reason for the Trunks look any longer.

The trunks are a design choice, calling the suit "armor" is more story related, one that insinuates that Superman actually has some need for protection other than his own superhuman skin. No superhero necessarily needs skin tight, colorful uniforms with symbols on the chests or capes or fancy design patterns. Comics and superheroes aren't all about necessity and practicality, and some things are just there because they look or sound cool.

As opposed to Starro, Sinestro, Lex, Lobo Deathstroke and Damian... They all stick out just as much as Harley.

Eh, I don't think they stick out as much as Harley. My thinking, for what it's worth:

Starro is at least an interesting choice.
Sinestro has been on the side of the angels before, plenty of times.
Lex has been doing good for quite a while now, and has a complex relationship with Supes.
Lobo has always been more anti-hero than straight villain.
Deathstroke, while always a villain, has been shown to have his own moral code that could put him on the side of the good guys every now and then.
And for Robin, Batman's proteges have a pretty good history in being involved with the League, especially Dick.

I could legit see interesting reasons for everybody else being on JL teams. But with Harley, it just reeks of them trying to keep her popular, even though she's already too exposed and not nearly interesting enough.

.

He's been operating in the area of reluctant hero to anti-hero for most of the last decade.

Anybody else looking forward to Flash War? That is the one character they’ve royally screwed up since Rebirth. Barry and older Wally both have been screwed up. Good to see they recognized that to a degree in the Prologue and hope they fix it.

Bendis is teasing some Batman work...

Geez, why even update and change costumes if we're always going to just go back to these things anyway?

I like Superman with the red underwear, serves no purpose, and he looks better. Red underwear's coming back.

I like Batman without the yellow oval, without it it makes the Bat look less dynamic, and the less bright colors on Batman the better. The oval's coming back...

Whelp, considering how much I LOVE LOVE LUUV Gorilla Grodd and Zoom (that's Hunter Zolomon), this will be a Flash story I'm following.

Well, people like Superman with the red underwear(I think you typoed there btw) and Batman with the yellow oval, and that's why it's coming back. For a while there was more demand for no trunks/no oval, now there may be more demand for the opposite. This is the way comics have always been, things change, stay that way for a while, go back to the way they were, and later on they change again. Batman getting the yellow oval was a change, Batman going from black to blue was a change, Batman going back to darker colors and losing the oval was undoing a change(not unlike undoing the trunkless Superman suits). Even Batman lost his trunks for a while and got them back in the 90s/00s, nobody complained about him having a retro/Frank Miller style suit with trunks.

Btw, I believe it's more or less confirmed now that the trunks are staying: https://***********/tomkingtk/status/958830839709753344

So it turns out Bendis is doing a WHOLE LOT OF SUPERMAN:

Very long, in-depth article.

Cliff notes:

He'll kick off with 10 pages on Action Comics #1000 (which won't be fluff, it'll be important to his run) and something, then DC Nation #0 (with Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez coming out of semi-retirement!).

Then, he'll go into a weekly six issue Superman mini-series starting in May, titled Man of Steel. Promises huge bombshells/shake-ups/status quo changes, but stresses it's not a reboot, it's following on from what Tomasi/Gleason and Jurgens have been doing.

He'll then be taking over both Superman (focused on being BIG action-adventure) and Action Comics (focused on Clark, the Daily Planet and Metropolis, new supporting characters and villains etc). The former is getting a new #1, while the latter will keep going on from #1000.

Wowza.

Man of Steel #1 and #2 covers:

I don't know that I can picture Bendis capturing Superman well, but I'll give him a shot. He made me an Avengers fan. Maybe he can make me a Superman fan.

Thats...problematic that Bendis is monopolizing all Superman books. Because if he's unable to deliver, where's the alternative? You dont like his Action Comics, you cant run over to Superman if hes on that too, and vice versa.

He never wants to write comics. Just long ass strings of dialogue and...a lot of nothings.

I'm not hearing or seeing anything about Jon Kent and that has me worried.

I only felt the trunks were problematic when the reasons for it as time moved on into the modern world kept getting smaller and smaller until it didn't have any reason to exist anymore. The redesigns were great (hell, even what they had in mind with the Superman V films were fine), from the comics to other media, and you all know the the DCEU suit is as timeless as the classic suit, so they did a great job there.

If there are a couple flaws in those redesigns (other than the belt that Romita, what the hell man), it would be the KISS rule they forgot (KISS=Keep It Simple, Stupid) because there are fanart that took the classic suit and removed the trunks only, and you felt was a better choice that going overboard. And the the fact that they changed one thing, but then they changed another which was unnecessary. The Rebirth suit was great, but why change the boots? I changed them back and they felt right. So those would be the flaws.

I will say this: Doomsday Clock is set a year into the DCU, and the books will be leading toward it. It was pointed out by ComicPop that they believe Johns wants that series to be timeless, so when we saw the yellow oval coming back on Batman (he doesn't have trunks on), they said that made sense because you want alot of people to read this story from the past and into the future and see a familiar Batman they know. So maybe that's why the trunks are back on Superman.

But for them to go back to the trunks hasn't settled in with me. While I do like the classic look, I never hated it mind you; like I said above, the reasons for it decreased over time, leading to the redesigns that were as important as keeping the core of what needed to stay and what was identifiable with the character of Superman with this costume.

Also, I said this before and will say it again: of all the things about the character to fight for, fighting for his underwear on the outside is one of the dumbest fights to have.

I'm down for what Bendis has planned for Superman, though I don't understand the need to reboot Superman for what, the 3rd or 4th time?

How many issues of Batman and Detective Comics have there been to date? I've fallen way behind.

Also, is King still on Batman?

@TomKingTK

I can't comment much. But Pete is one of my favorite writers and I know what he's doing next and it's perfect.

@PeterJTomasi

Thanks for the kind thoughts/appreciation on my #Superman run with my partner in crime @patrick_gleason and the amazing @DougMahnke. It's been my honor and privilege to have my name on a Superman book. Cool things to announce shortly. Looking forward to @BRIANMBENDIS kicking ass!
If the same applies to Jurgens, Booster Gold is my safest guess. No idea about Tomasi, though. Titles swap from team to team all the time, so I'm not too worked up, but they've both done fine work and, hopefully, are given the opportunity to craft finales for their respective runs.

When Bendis going to DC was announced, he mentioned going to whatever Superman display or museum there is in Cleveland and talked about how that convinced him to switch over, so I'm not too surprised to see Superman being his first stop at DC. The surprising part is seeing him getting the Byrne treatment, though I'm admittedly intrigued. I like what he had to say about developing a supporting cast and really digging into Metropolis.

I'm not too worried about Jon just yet. Not until I've seen a real reason to be. So much about the Rebirth era has been about bringing back characters and elements disregarded by the New 52. I can't imagine they'd look at one of the most well-regarded new parts of this era and say "Meh" and toss him aside.

I'm really pleased Bendis is taking over the Superman books. Superman is the biggest comic book character of them all, so he should have the best creators working on him.
