I'm a die hard Swamp Thing fan. I own every single issue of the character, including peripheral appearances in other books. So I guess it's fair to say I'm a little more invested in Swamp Thing and therefore a bit more fanatical than I am with the likes of Batman or Superman.
The New52 Swamp Thing is where Snyder lost me as a fan of his work. I found his retcon/modification to the Moore run to be wholly arbitrary and ultimately pointless. I don't really care to alternate timeline stories so Rotworld was a huge turn-off. Issues 8 and 9 were pretty interchangeable with his Batman issues 8 and 9 (just two issues of fight sequence), and his villains all spoke with the same vernacular. It was also the start of Snyder's "big, bold, EPIC!!!!!" proclamations.
Snyder's run was the loud, bombastic yet empty action/horror comic. Having Yanick Paquette on art duties really helped keep it bearable. Soule's run started as a nice change of pace but ultimately felt very generic. It felt more like a fluffy superhero comic with a tinge of horror, but had no mood or atmosphere. I thought it was better than Brian K. Vaughn's run, but not by much.
King's one-shot tapped back into the deeper, more personal storytelling of Swamp Thing vol. 2, which was the volume that saw Moore, Nancy A. Collins and even Mark Millar do incredible things with Swamp Thing. That book was filled with the kind of horror that was so subtle and low-key that you didn't realize how truly terrifying it was already crawling under your skin. I also found it much more literate.
But I like King's Batman so what do I know
