More thoughts from Ryan/Kinberg about Leitch/the film etc. Ryan says they're casting Cable and Dom currently and are about to move into production.

I'm posting the article here, just for convenience's sake.

Ryan Reynolds on Deadpool 2 and new director
David Leitch

The actor talks about the highly anticipated sequel and its change in directors.

One of 2016’s biggest surprises was the overwhelming success of Deadpool, which opened in February to a massive $132 million (and went on to gross $782 million worldwide).

Star Ryan Reynolds, who is EW’s Entertainer of the Year, is about to return to the red leather suit as mercenary Wade Wilson for the highly anticipated sequel. “We’re just in the development stage but we’re about to move into production,” he says. Reynolds confirms that they’re currently casting for Cable and “we’re looking at” telekinetic female merc Domino as another character for the sequel.

But all has not been smooth sailing: the first film’s director, Tim Miller, recently departed the project due to reported “creative differences.” Of Miller, Reynolds tells EW, “There is not a human being on earth that worked harder on Deadpool than Tim. He’s an incredibly, incredibly talented director.”

With Miller gone, the Deadpool team hired John Wick director David Leitch to helm the sequel. “Everbody was just a fan of his work,” says Reynolds. “He’s just a guy who’s so muscular with his action. He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick. One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is they can make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost.”

And the Deadpool creative team is aiming to keep the sequel lean and mean like the original. “The goal for us when we sat down and started talking about it was it needs to be as provocative and startling as the first film which means it can’t just be a continuation of the first film,” says producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Apocalypse). “It has tonally and stylistically be as fresh and original. That’s a big challenge especially because they had 10 years to gestate on the first movie and we don’t have that kind of time on the second movie. That’s the biggest mandate going into on the second film: to not make it bigger. We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie. But actually stay true to the tenets of it’s the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special — it’s not the explosions and the special effects.”

I really like what Simon Kinberg says about the sequel not being a carbon copy of the original, as this was one of my biggest worries with Tim Miller leaving.

So much for Deadpool 2 having a much bigger budget. Its better this way. They will go big for the 3rd film.

Still think the budget for part 2 is going to be at least $90-100 million.

They cut corners to get the first movie done on the $58 million budget, and Tim Miller and his company worked overtime and for free to finetune the effects. That's not happening with the sequel, and you've got Cable and Domino in it, as well.

And by the way, there's one major visual effect that they just CAN'T half-ass: Deadpool's facial expressions. I didn't like them in the teaser trailer, as I felt they looked too cartoony, but I was completely blown away by the end result in the movie. I'd be disappointed if there was even the slightest dip in quality.

90 mill is still modest. It could even be lower. David Leitch will cut corners too. Cable and Domino should be cheaper than Colossus and Negasonic. We shall see.

That's probably the reason why Miller left. He wanted to make a bigger movie.

Though a bit old and possibly outdated, Jeff Sneider did mention that Domino was going to be the breakout character of the film when he dropped Mackenzie Davis and Kyle Chandler's names for Dom/Cable. So I feel like if there's some real big action set pieces that'll be a Quicksilver-esque standout moment for a character in there, the budget could get racked up higher for sure.

Less than a hundred million is still cheap for a Hollywood studio blockbuster. Fox could spend $90 million on a Deadpool sequel which would look good and still make them a good profit.

Tim Miller is a real class act!
And just like I thought (and have always said), he would've never tried to make Deadpool something it isn't. He's a huge comic book nerd (more than anyone else involved with the movie), for Christ's sake!
My gut feeling tells me that he left because Ryan Reynolds' ego inflated while working on the sequel. But it doesn't matter anymore. It's pretty much a closed case.
I'm looking forward to see his next movie!

I just want to say one thing to the geek audience out there, because it’s important to me what the geeks and nerds of the world think because they are my brothers and sisters.
Awwww. I feel so bad for him. I knew that rumour about him wanting to make a bigger movie was complete BS.

It is so nice to hear from him and for him to clear up the some of the malicious rumors about him wanting some massive budget.

He did say a bunch of usual **** how everything was great and amazing. He didn't say the only important thing - why he left.

He'll never exactly say why he left because he wants to work. And I don't think that he'll ever admit to there being serious issues on set even if there were because he wants to work and he is still working with Fox. Would I like to hear the truth of those things to confirm what I already believe? Yes but I'm not going to die if I never get confirmation.

That all being said, I hope that the sequel is a good film and I do think the director choice seems solid so I think that we have a chance to get a good sequel.

If he wanted a bigger budget(lets say 30 millions). Why would he admit that ?

Miller is over 40 and has a successful visual effects company. I dont think he needs money and wants to be hollywood rich. He wants to have fun directing movies and have at least some creative freedom.

Even if he wanted one he should have got one. There was rumour his company did good part of work for free in Deadpool for CGI effects. And movie and cinematography looked better than the budget it had. It's likely this was true.

It should have been obvious he wanted guys to be paid for sequel. And if he did wanted go bit bigger in overall world, why not. People forget part of budget was cut for first Deadpool and they couldnt do scenes with guns at the end. But they made it part of the joke in the movie.

I mean do you really want again to cut or limit a budget and director of the movie who made highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. I am pretty sure Miller is not type of director who wanted 200M budget. Cause Deadpool is example he didnt need to have one. But It would certainly be nice if it was bigger so he had freedom to do what he maybe wanted to do with first one without someone cutting and undermining his creative vision.

I think Miller's word on Fox are saying something. "And for Fox, too. They deserve to make more money. They need to make more money [laughs]. They were great. They were terrific."

I sensed sarcasm in this. Fox is greedy studio. Of course they would want in one way smaller budget and get likely same amount of money which would they get even if sequel had higher budget. Chandler was likely just excuse for studio together with Reynolds's ego not to bring him back.

I didn't sense any sarcasm or jab at the studio with that comment.

And despite the budget cuts for Deadpool, be careful not to mix the current Fox up with the Tom Rothman era.

Comic book nerds' idea of 20th Century Fox as a studio doesn't really reflect the truth. It's actually a great studio right now. It's directors-friendly, they produce and release a variety of different kinds of movies (instead of just focusing on huge tentpoles) and are willing to take risks.

No other studio - not even the beloved Marvel Studios / Disney - would've ever allowed a movie such as Deadpool to be R-rated. Let alone the upcoming Wolverine movie Logan.

Say what you will about the studio, but despite the initial budget cut they allowed Miller, Reynolds and Co. to make the movie they wanted, and did everything to support it and make it the success it ultimately is.

And keep in mind that Tim Miller's relationship with Fox seems to be great, and that he is currently working on the sci-fi pic Influx with them.

Geeks really need to lay off Fox. LOL.

I really think Tim Miller simply didn't get along with Ryan Reynolds, and they didn't see eye to eye when it came to the sequel, so he decided to leave the project.

Didn't get along with Reynolds? I didn't think it was that bad. Or do you just mean seeing eye to eye on the sequel?

The two things aren't necessarily exclusive. If Tim Miller ended up leaving the sequel, it probably wasn't possible for the two to work together.

Deadpool 2 is expected to start filming in June in Vancouver. Which means that the movie is either being released on June 29th, 2018 or November 2nd, 2018 (and that the March 2018 slot most probably is for The New Mutants).

New mutants is defently the march 2018 film.

I will not be surprised if Deadpool 2 opens november 2 2018.I think there won't be a june film.

With how successful the original was, I could see them releasing the sequel in summer. Deadpool's now a full-blown blockbuster franchise.
