I dig the concept look, because I like how they incorporated her ethnicity into the design. I would like it much less if they just painted her white. It just doesn't fit. Doesn't work.
It's a massive departure, but I think they kept the essence with this new design.
I really don't care if it would, "mean less." A huge part of the reason why I like Domino as a character is because of her original design. And "incorporating her ethnicity into the design" is stupid because Domino ultimately has no real heritage to speak of. She's an artificial mutant grown in a lab and has never shown any affinity towards any culture or another. If they wanted to show off that Domino in this continuity is black, then they could have given her cornrows instead of an afro since she's had short hair since the late-90s.
It's like when DC hired an English Actor to play an Irish Bane despite the fact that he's supposed to be from a fictional South American country. Bane was far less interesting as a white guy.
Or when Marvel decided to use an English actor to play an American Mandarin despite the fact that Mandarin is Mongolian and his character has always been a deeply reactionary character obsessed with the loss of his empire and the way that China has overtaken Mongolia when his people used to be in charge. Killian was ultimately nothing more than an evil Tony Stark and you had none of the past/future contrast between the two men anymore. And Mandarin was far less interesting as a result.
And then there were not one but two takes on the Fantastic Four where the Storms were opposite race siblings which made no sense.
And a white Ra's Al Ghul despite the fact that Arab actors only ever appear on Homeland, 24 and nowhere else unless you're Rami Malek.
There are ways to change a character's race for the better. I feel like an Asian Elektra was the right way to go since she was trained by Japanese ninjas. I liked Idris Elba and Vondie Curtis Hall as Heimdall and Ben Urich far better than I did their counterparts in the source material. Native Hawaiian Aquaman? Sure since nothing about Aquaman ever really stuck me as, "has to be a white guy." I was originally against Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie since she's the only Swedish superhero in the Marvel U but then I learned that Marvel were making her into a completely new character and TBH I always saw Valkyrie as a lame character and Tessa Thompson was the best part of Creed. And you know what, aside from Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, none of these characters lost any part of what makes them unique (and Valkyrie was never all that great of a character anyway).
Does a black Domino bother me? In theory, no. But when they change the haircut, the costume and no longer make her an albino, it feels like she's Domino in name only. And the no longer albino part really bugs me more than anything else since she's literally the only albino superhero. I'm fine with Zazzie Beetz but they really do need to change her makeup, give her a haircut and put her in a costume that's skintight but has her cover up. Her albinism is literally part of the character and something that IMO can't be changed. I wanted to see what Zazzie would do with the role but if Fox won't give her the right kind of costume, then my anticipation is lowered.
