Usually, studios like to release sequels around the same month/weekend as the original film. It's going to have a LOT of summer films competing for money, and the week following the Han Solo solo film... well, it is counter programming.
What also happens is that if a movie is successful, its sequel gets 'promoted' to the summer blockbuster season.
It happened with 22 Jump Street (released in June, while the first one bowed out in March), which went on to gross $191m domestic and $139m int'l for a total of $331m worldwide (against 21 Jump Street's $138m+$63m=$201m).
And Deadpool wasn't just successful, it was a juggernaut. So I figured that the sequel could easily become Fox's big summer 2018 tentpole. And so it is.
There are lots of people who skipped Deadpool in theaters and found out about it on home video. If the trailers for Deadpool 2 won't be underwhelming I can see it getting LOTS of momentum next summer.
The character is now tentpole material. The original made fraggin' $783m worldwide last year. We're not talking about a small underdog project anymore.
