Dexter - Part 5

Okay, I haven't really said anything all season, but now that we're right near the end and there has been zero improvement whatsoever I gotta say it - THIS SEASON SUCKS!

It has absolutely no redeeming qualities to me. I don't like how any of the main characters are acting, I don't like any of the villains, I don't like the plot or the overall arc of the season, and I seriously hate the fact that this is the pathetic build up to an ending we get after years of what truly was at one point great television.

I have enjoyed every single other season. Obviously some where better than others, but each one had things about it I liked. But I feel like it all went downhill after Deb found out the truth, and I'm not even sure how cause I was really gagging for that to happen... but I guess sometimes it's 'be careful what you wish for' :(

Add in the addition of Hannah Mackay, the dull and chemistryless love interest that just won't go away - and it's gone from being the kind of show I used to watch the minute it was out, to the kind of show I put on almost reluctantly days later.

Gutted.

Can't say I disagree. I feel like I'll be watching the finale more out of obligation than interest, which makes me sad.

Zack felt like an obvious spinoff character for the long rumored spinoff. Then he got brain surgeoned. At least that was an unexpected twist to the season. Hannah I don't think should've come back at all though. She was done and over with.

Instead they needed to write themselves out of the Deborah loves Dexter angle they painted themselves into and yanked the most convienent female they could find.

Debra loving Dexter would've been fun to explore. But for some reason everyone was so against it. Makes me wonder if that's why the writers chose to forget about it

So how deep into the finale will Lumen return?

Literally there has been one throwaway mention. That's it. It was a very interesting angle and I feel the show 5 seasons ago would have tackled it head on

Agreed.

For me -

Season 1 - Awesome. Very new and fresh with great characters and wonderful tone

Season 2 - My personal favorite. It carried on everything great from Season 1 and developed it. The show could have finished here.

Season 3 - 3rd seasons are always difficult but this one fell flat for me. I thought it was quite dull and felt extremely different.

Season 4 - Much better than 3 but still suffered from many issues. Lithgow papered over a lot of the cracks IMO and the season isn't as good on a rewatch but still quite strong.

Season 5 - I really liked this season. infact I'd put it in the top 3. The only issue for me was the end.

Season 6 - This was decent. I quite enjoyed the whole apocalyptic angle even though it got incredibly stupid at times. I thought it was a bit of a dip but still fine

Season 7 - This was reallllly good IMO. It tackled the many plot strands well and built and built. It seemed thought out and I was really excited to hear this was essentially part 1 to a 2 season arc.

Basically IMO all of the seasons have had redeeming qualities. Some were weak but I honestly believe I could comfortably rewatch all the seasons other than maybe 3. So I hurts to say that Season 8 IMO is godawful. I just can't find anything I like about it. Characters - All pretty much unlike their characters. Plot - Muddled from beginning to end with not one particular strand. Villain - Had potential if he wasn't brought in so late. Pace - What pace? It's been so boring. Writing - Just BAD I may flip out if I hear Dexter say he's "changed" again.

The only thing I liked about this season was pretty much the opening episodes. But that was only because it seemed to be leading somewhere.

I wanted to like it but it has gone far past the point of no return. Unless this storm either A) Wipes everyone off the face of the Earth or B) Brings back everyone who has died to hunt down Dexter then this wont be a decent finale.

Agreed. Not much else to add.

Season 2 - My personal favorite. It carried on everything great from Season 1 and developed it. The show could have finished here.

I liked the Doakes subplot, but didn't care for Lila (or whoever the British chick was). And really, this was them blowing their wad too soon. This should have been the final season. Unlike 1 and 4, this season never cries out to be rewatched.

Season 3 - 3rd seasons are always difficult but this one fell flat for me. I thought it was quite dull and felt extremely different.

I must be the only person who liked season 3. I loved Miguel as kind of a corrupt civil servant villain who destroys people through city-hall instead of the typical serial killer. Their rooftop confrontation is still something I watch regularly on YouTube. The Skinner subplot felt tacked on and could have been dropped though. Not as good as 1 and 4, but all in all, much better than any of Dexter's last few seasons.

Season 4 - Much better than 3 but still suffered from many issues. Lithgow papered over a lot of the cracks IMO and the season isn't as good on a rewatch but still quite strong.

Technically not as good as season 1, but my favorite season because of Lithgow's creepy performance as Trinity Killer. No other portrayal of a serial killer in this show's history seemed as authentic as this one. And so many classic scenes, like Thanksgiving dinner with Trinity's messed up family, Trinity going to Miami Metro and confronting Dexter and of course, the final scene with Rita and the baby.
Maybe it's not fair of me to say, since I haven't been able to sit through all of the later seasons, but I thought season 4 was the last time Dexter was truly good as a show.

Season 5 - I really liked this season. infact I'd put it in the top 3. The only issue for me was the end.

This was the last whole season I watched and the one that kinda turned me off Dexter. I can't even remember why I hated it so much, because it was pretty forgettable, but there were some really stupid scenes. I vaguely recall one in particular where Dexter almost gets caught at a waterfront warehouse by Miami Metro, but talks his way out of some situation with an asinine reason that no detective would ever buy. Wish I could remember the details. Unlike some, I didn't think Lumen was that bad. The writing in general was just bleh.

Season 6 - This was decent. I quite enjoyed the whole apocalyptic angle even though it got incredibly stupid at times. I thought it was a bit of a dip but still fine

Hated it. Watched three or four episodes and then stopped.

Season 7 - This was reallllly good IMO. It tackled the many plot strands well and built and built. It seemed thought out and I was really excited to hear this was essentially part 1 to a 2 season arc.

Watched one or two episodes, which isn't enough to make a judgement. I heard it's better than 6 and 8, but still not as good as the early seasons.

I've watched three full episodes and bits and pieces of other episodes from this season. I couldn't take any more. Whenever Harrison or Hannah is onscreen I feel like Alex in A Clockwork Orange suffering through it. The writing is atrocious. Season 3 is a masterpiece compared to the dreck I saw. I've said it before, but it's a damn shame what Dexter has become. Shows have declined before, but I've never seen a drop in quality this big. It's like they hired a bunch of new sucky writers or the old writers stopped giving a crap.

Season 3 has probably my favorite scene in the series...

*shows blood stain on shirt*

Miguel: You think this is funny?

Dexter: They said that stain would COME OUT!

Miguel: *beep* you.

:hehe:

Only seasons I don't like are 6 and 8. Everything else is good **** IMO.

According to Wiki showrunner Clyde Phillips and head writer Melissa Rosenberg left after season 4. Not saying cause and effect but something to it.

O'Haire that's exactly the scene I was thinking of too. That and Trinity's "hello, Dexter Morgan" are my two favorite scenes of the entire series.

I love that " Hello, Dexter Morgan" as well, but it drives me nuts that Angel walks by. Looks both of them in the eyes, & he never recalls that at all! At all!

Miguel had charisma he was cool, btw how can people not like S3? :D

:oldrazz:

I do agree about Dexter, it sort of lost the quality, each season had good things in it, even 5 which I is among my least favorite seasons, but with the current one it just feels like they we're undecided or just didn't care, which is strange, since Season 7 took a step forward from 6 and the situation looked really promising for the final season! Could it also be the fact that they rushed it a bit and it aired in the summer? It got me thinking.

It's stuff like that the show misses! One of my favorite moments of the show is when Dex imagines telling Deb he is the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Yeah, or Dexter dragging a dead body into Miami Metro if you recall! :D

Agree with pretty much everything that's being said.

Tbh though, Season 5 was one of my faves.

For one thing, I think Julia Stiles is a great actress and her characters story was definitely one of most emotional on the show (along with Rita), and I loved the way Deb connected with her as a victim after viewing the tapes (even though she didn't know who it was)... I really wanted her to discover Dexter's secret that season, because I felt it was one of the best ways for Deb to really understand there is SOME good in what he does.

Her and Dexter's relationship was the only romance on the show I connected with other than Rita too. Because it made so much sense that they'd fall in love due to the circumstances they were both in, and even the way it ended didn't feel forced or like they were tying up a loose end... It just felt like that was the way it was always going to end.

Yeah I really liked Season 5, I think it got a bad deal cause it came off of Season 4

she annoys me in anything shes in so

Season 5 had potential but at the end the writers seemingly got cold feet or otherwise decided to scrap everything to which they had build up:

- Deb doesn't find out about Dexter
- Quinn gives up his suspicions
