If it hadn't already been used in a big budget flick, "times they are a changin" would be an awesome song to intro us into season 5 of Dexter.

Or at the end of season 4.

Ah, no.

Damn Dexter's gonna be a mess next season. It's gonna be so different. I hope he'll start killing more to blow off steam. Not enough killing dudes this season heh.

I don't want Dexter to be moping around all next season. I hope they skip ahead a few years when Harrison is a little older, if they plan on having what goes around come around.

I still have major issues with the end twist
Not so much the twist itself, which ultimately served the purpose of proving Trinity and Harry right. But, the writers were incredibly lazy in delivering this fact. For the fact that we didn't actually see how Trinity found Dexter's house or even a flashback of him killing Rita (which woulda been horrifyingly awesome) is just inexcusable by the creative staff. It's a major leap of faith to expect the audience to accept that Trinity managed to find Dexter's house through searching his apartment. I thought that was a little ridiculous. Rita dying is an apporiate means to and end, but jesus, flesh this development out a little more. I hope season 5 they sit down and consider that this sort of thing needs to be fixed so we don't have a letdown in what most likely to me would be the shows final season.

So, how many more season do you think we will get?

Depends on the success of season 5, I think and kinda hope it's their last. Unless they can come up with compelling and interesting stories without it getting too ridiculous, I would be ok with a 6th season but not beyond that.

EW talked with one of the producers about the finale and she bounced around the idea of a six month time jump for season 5.

So, how many more season do you think we will get?
Probably one more; it just depends on the writing-which can be a ratings killer.
The problem with shows like this that have instant success is that after awhile, it gets hard to maintain that level of interest without it becoming repetitive and dull.

I mean how do you top Lithgow's performance for this season's antagonist and it not looked strained or caricaturized?

The writers really have their work cut out for them next season.

I disagree.

Dexter has been receiving a bigger ratings with every following season, the fanbase has grown a lot considering Season 3 sold the most DVD's and opened at number 2 on the dvd chart.Season 4 is bound to smash those records too.

If the ratings were the major issue Dexter would have at the very least 3-4 more seasons,it's by far the biggest show that Showtime has.

But hopefully the longevity will depend purely on the writers creativity i.e they will stop while Dexter is still fresh rather than when they've run out of ammo.

Which I'm afraid might happen if they're not careful. It's going to take careful crafting on Season 5 by the writers to weave themselves out of last week's finale. It's a mess.

Will be interesting where it's heading no doubt. I want the series to end up on top and not overstaying its welcome.

John Lithgow actually explained the timeline

Trinity looked up Dexter Morgan and found 2 D.Morgans. The first place he went was Debra Morgan. He didn't make the connection to Dexter and left the place. The second D.Morgan was Dexter. He was in the house when Rita came back to look for her wallet. This is when he killed her. Then he went to pick up his Mustang.

The only reason i'm happy for the long waiting period between S4 and S5 is the fact they have sufficient time to create a great season. They don't have to rush and do it half-heartedly.It could be and amazing season with great writing but like you've said it's a mess already and if they don't it carefully it could turn out bad.

But considering how much i've enjoyed these 4 seasons i have complete trust in the writers and the acting team.

yea why is that so hard to figure out? BC the voicemail throws everyone off. they should have forgot the voicemail, and just had dex calling rita to make sure she made it....then had her phone ring and ****

Even in comics (and this is debatable IMO), good writing can overcome mediocre/bad art. I have faith that the actors for this series will bring "it" but the writers have to give them something to work with and the direction of course. :cwink:

I'm far from being an occulist but we'll see how it goes. I'll be the first to admit to you that I'm wrong if the writers can rival/surpass this season which was simply superb adding Lithgow as the cherry on top.

how does the voicemail throw everyone off?

She said that the moon would be beautiful that night. Some people heard the moon is beautiful tonight. Which meant Rita died after sundown and Trinity was on the road at that point. But the show was actually correct.

I didn't even catch what she said to analyze it. So I guess it didn't affect me much.

Does anyone wonder whether Trinity at least informed Rita about Dex's double life as "Kyle Butler" infiltrating Trinity's life & family or was it a quick & quiet kill so that he could get the hell out of Dodge now that he was on the run?

You'd have to think that before death, Rita was enlightened that there was more to her absentee husband than just work and CSI conventions. :hehe:

Did Trinity tell Rita about Dexter before he killed her?
PHILLIPS:
I don’t know the answer to that question. We haven’t talked about next season. But [my gut says] I would think that he did not tell her.

at most he would tell her about his dual identity as Kyle Butler and how he tried to blackmail him for money. Since Trinity didn't know about Dexter's serial killing tendancies, I'm guessing Rita died without ever knowing the real truth.

^^^Thanks :yay:. For some reason, I cannot pull up this link at work to read it all though.

Enjoy :cwink:

When was the decision made to kill off Rita?
CLYDE PHILLIPS:
I would say we made the decision pretty late in the season. We didn’t quite know what we were going to do [in the finale].
Why Rita?
PHILLIPS:
The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. It’s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didn’t do as well as we could have. We killed off Jimmy Smits’ character [in the 11th episode] of 12 episodes and then we had to figure out what we were going to do in the 12th episode. This season, we knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year.
How did Julie Benz take the news that she was leaving the show?
PHILLIPS:
She wasn’t happy. She loved being with us. We loved having her with us. She took it… professionally. She was greatly disappointed. She’s a professional. She works in television. She knew that this was a possibility.
Did Trinity tell Rita about Dexter before he killed her?
PHILLIPS:
I don’t know the answer to that question. We haven’t talked about next season. But [my gut says] I would think that he did not tell her.
Might she return as a ghost like Dex’s dad?
PHILLIPS:
The answer, at the moment, is no. However, had you asked me two years ago if Lundy was coming back I would’ve said no. We didn’t know he was coming back until this year. It just seemed expedient to the story — to Dexter’s story and to Deb’s story.
Some people thought the game-changing twist was going to involve Deb figuring out that Dexter is a serial killer. How much longer can you stretch out that story before you pay it off?
PHILLIPS:
We’ve bounced that around the [writers'] room. But once we do that… want to talk about game-changers? Once we do that, the game is changed in a way that we just don’t know how to anticipate just yet.
Will next season be about Dexter juggling serial killing and single fatherhood?
PHILLIPS:
He is a single father. But, beyond that, we don’t know. We don’t know if there’s going to be what we call “a Big Bad,” like Jimmy Smits and John Lithgow, or if it’s going to be more individual, stand-alone stories.
I understand you wrote two endings to throw people off. What was the other ending?
PHILLIPS:
While Dexter was packing to leave, he saw on the television that a child murderer had just escaped from prison. Either escaped or fallen thru the cracks. So he’s thinking, “Do I join Rita on vacation or do I…” and then he looks towards the camera and he has this big decision.
That would’ve been disappointing.
PHILLIPS:
[Laughs] Yeah. Compared to this? Are you kidding?

the latter ending is something like I was expecting. I'm satisfied to an extent with the way the finale ended...I don't think I've ever really thought about a finale for more than an hour or so after it has aired, but this one stuck in my head. The imagery in the show is often times really great, and the image of Benz dead in the tub of blood is a rather haunting one. They made her look extremely innocent, beautiful, and helpless. You can't help but feel bad. The baby in blood thing was a bit over the top, however (just because of the "coincidence" to Dexter's own blood bath when he was little).

How the **** does Entourage get so many nods?? I like it n everything but they have some of the most inconsistent directionless storytelling ever.

Great acting and the writing is fine in Entourage save for the most recent season. And you know when a show is nominated twice it keeps getting nominated for consistency sake
