Days of Future Past "Director's Cut": The Official Matthew Vaughn Thread

Could a mod change this to the 'Matthew Vaughn thread' or the 'Creative team thread'. Something along those lines.

IGN had an opportunity to speak with director Matthew Vaughn about this week's DVD and Blu-ray release of Kick-Ass, but of course we couldn't resist getting in some questions about his next project, X-Men: First Class.

Vaughn, speaking on the phone from Pinewood Studios in London, where he's in pre-production on the film, said that he hopes to follow the model of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot, paying homage to the original source material, while taking it in a new direction with a fresh, young cast.

"Obviously [Abrams] couldn't make everyone happy with that one, but he did a pretty good job," Vaughn said. "He made a fantastically exciting reinvention of that world, with those great characters. And I think there will be comparisons a little bit with X-Men: First Class. It's very similar, in a way. But we're doing some cool stuff in this movie, some really cool stuff that you haven't seen before."

While Vaughn was guarded about revealing any details of the story, as conceived by former X-Men director Bryan Singer, it does sound as though it might play a bit with the canon timeline, just as Star Trek did.

"The story that Bryan Singer came up with is very, very smart," Vaughn said. "It's very clever when you see how he has integrated the characters into the time period where the film is set. I'll put it that way. I just don't want to give it away. ... It's a very clever way of getting these characters involved in recent history, in recent world events."

Vaughn wouldn't go so far as to say that the story is completely original and not based on the comics, but he doesn't worry about criticism from die-hard fans about the faithfulness of the adaptation. "There's always that risk, but I think that when they see the film they will be very excited about the direction that we've chosen."

The director also talked about the preparation the cast members are doing to get ready for filming, which begins later this month.

"The quality of the actors that we've got in these roles is truly world class," Vaughn said. "James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are really working well together. We're about to start a rehearsal period before the shoot and they are coming up with some great ideas. They really care very deeply about their characters and how they interact in the film. And the younger cast members as well, the other mutants, they're really incredibly talented. And it's going to be a pleasure to work with them. It really is. They're all very, very committed as well. They're training every day for several hours. Literally, right now they're training with the stunt teams and they're all taking their diets very seriously and exercising a lot and working very, very hard. It's very exciting to see it come together."

I got a little creative. Let me know what you think.

Gad dammiT!

But X-Men did astro-plane/psychic battles first! :cmad:

Nooo!!!! This would've been awesome!! :( :(

The one thing I loved about X-Men was how they showed how Xavier interacts psychically with others' minds in X-Men when he saw Kelly's memories through his eyes.

X3 would have been so much better if they did something similar in the psychic battle at Jean's house where we could see Xavier trying to get inside Jean's head.

A dozen pages scrapped?? Oh lord, what have you done, Nolan!!!

The IGN interview is EXTREMELY intriguing.

I think it would have been awesome too, but Nolan didn't have Vaughn scrap those pages the way he scrapped JLA. :funny: It would have worked great in somebody's head if they had done something different with the set. I sure hope they weren't gonna do it in a fancy hotel hallway. :funny:

It's a shame they felt the need to scrap 12 pages though. How much time do they have before they have to lock that stuff down?

Well, in most films, script changes can occur on a daily basis...

I don't know how much impact those 12 pages could have set them back or affected them at this early point..

Scripts are never locked down until the film is edited, signed, sealed, and delivered.

Is there any group/page/etc. on Facebook that's following the progress of First Class?

I wonder if this is slightly exaggerated just in an attempt to use the popularity of Inception to hype of the buzz of X-Men here..

Whatever they envisioned in FC, can't really be that similar to Inception, IMO...based on the description anyway..

Does this mean that they're not confident with their script? If what they had was good, they would not have scrapped it, they should have improved upon it !! A full scale psi-battle is something I really want to see in the movies.

I thought the reddish environment Xavier was in when he used cerebro to search for the mutants at the end of X2 was the perfect tone for the astral plane. It would have been awesome if they had revisited that in X3 when Xavier was fighting Jean. They could have added the astral plane and made it epic.

Well, I don't think it's clear that it's totally being removed, but if they were confident enough to write it the way it was and confident enough to take it out, they're probably confident enough to replace it with something better..

Kudos for them in trying to really bring something different and adapting..

Perhaps. I will admit this: I totally want to go see Inception now. So if that was the goal, it wasn't exactly a fail. LOL

LS! Go, now!

Um, after re-reading it a bunch of times, I think the scene will still be in the film, just shown different. Like, without a spinning room.

Taking inspiration from Star Trek? Scenes that would be comparable to Inception? :wow:

My interest has just tripled.

This movie is coming together REALLY slow

Not really...

Yeah, it might be moving faster than originally anticipated..

Sure, but that's for parts that can be ADR'd.

You can't exactly add in an action sequence with anti-gravity in post. :funny:

What does ADR'd mean, and have anymore of Vaughn's interviews been released?

Automated dialogue replacement, meaning the actor goes into the studio after shooting to re-record dialogue. Obviously script changes can be made then, if the editing was really clever such that the actor could be talking while facing away from the camera. :funny:

It's just that for script changes that involve different sets and previz, that stuff has to be locked down pretty early on so you can schedule your shooting around it.
