Oh next year ought to be fun.

I really don't look forward to the unhinged conspiracy theories that explains the momentum of the Democratic Party given the wins they are racking up. Prepare for Bannon and Trump to go scorched Earth going into 2018.

I honestly did not see that coming.

What a relief. Still, it's worrying that it was so tight. It's crazy that evangelicals have made peace with pedophiles.

I'm actually a bit worried about what trump will do on the way out. No way will he peacefully reliquinch power. He will want to burn everything on the way out

Honestly, it's sad that we have to celebrate this. But that's what the world has come to. For shame.

Great to see but I honestly did not have enough faith in people this year to believe it would happen.

I hope Jones' victory is a sign that American people have said Enough Is Enough, and they're doing something about it. This is a victory, but the pebbles need to turn into an avalanche if they want to undo the destruction that Trump & the GOP have created in the past year.

You sort of have to put this in perspective Moore was an extremely terrible candidate and Jones barely beat him(albeit in deep red Alabama).

To me the lessen I think Dem should(but won't) learn is they need to give candidates in non-liberal/progressive areas a little leeway on some issues. Taking the party line stance on abortion probably cost Jones 2-3% and beyond that Jones wasn't properly prepared to answer questions about where exactly he stands(the republicans basically took his generic talking point comment how he is open to everything and made that literal in the sense he is in favor of 9 month abortions)

Good luck to Mr. Jones, but the results of the election tells me that there's still a whole bunch of (expletive deleted) people in Alabama overall (and in other states as well)-- I guess the DNC skated by with this one, but I'd say this seat is still vulnerable-- I presume that Jones will have to run again whenever Sessions six year term normally would end.

Democratic party candidates have already been running for state office with "conservative" stances on the hot-button issues, that's old news. The DNC state party apparatus in "middle America" needs to do a hell of a lot better job in local community outreach and challenging voter disenfranchisement laws. White rural people always get to be the default standard on what "the real working-class America" is like and that's abhorrent.

Here's hoping the DNC has learned their lesson. The DNC apparently spent their money on getting black and millenial turnout. And considering that the blue areas had damn near presidential election levels of turnout, in an off year, special election in Dec, if they can broaden that strategy nationwide. Man, the bloodbath would be amazing.

This is what happens when the Obama coalition sticks together rather than goes off chasing various shiny objects in the face of a lock step and motivated GOP. Since 2000 what have we learned? Margins are razor thin. Sitting out, protest votes or tilting at various windmills only causes the worst outcomes for the people that take those actions.

Don’t get too excited...the third place candidate was a write in football coach.

In Alabama that was to be expected. Jones' win on the other hand was not.

Alabama flipped 30 pts. There are a LOT of Congresspeople that a lesser flip will leave them without a job. Dems are energized. Dems are organized. And lessons have been learned. Dems had a presidential election level turnout for an off year special election in Dec. This was going to be a tough year for the Dems, just because they really are on the defensive.

Now, now it looks like they can go on the offensive. Half of the GOP Senate seats are looking very winnable now.

Well it looks like Moore is going to lose but it's close as ****.

Waaay too close for common sense.

This is a historic win no matter how you put it. Alabama hasn't elected a democrat to senate since 1992, and that democrat (Shelby), switched parties two years later. This is huge for dems, and a good sign the GOP is fcked in 2018.

Heck Mississippi could become competitive with that same level of enthusiasm, especially if Bannon favorite McDaniel primaries Vicker. It already went higher then Clinton and Obama then Alabama ever did, and has the biggest percentage of AA per-state.

I'm excited!

Yep. They need to take this playbook on the road and put up a fight EVERYWHERE. And as of today, it seems the GOP has handed them a new tool to mobilize millenials in particular with Pai killing Net Neutrality.

Technically that article should say not enough evidence yet. Basically it says those write ins haven't been counted yet so in theory Saban could have finished 3rd. I wish they would tally those write in to tell us who got how many votes.

But the initial source was a satirical website. Anyone quoting that website or getting their information from it should have known better.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Saban did finish 3rd though given how I heard many anecdotal stories both before and after the election how people will vote for Saban

Republican State legislators are scared ****less now.....

They have a President extremely low in approval ratings....
They have history against them....
It's getting proven in places like Alabama and Virginia...

Gerrymandering may not even get them through this next mid-term.

Plus, even if he lost, Moore will be a talking point. As will the republican tax plan, that seems likely to pass. As well as the repeal of net neutrality. It's almost like they don't want to win, as they've consistently tried to push things with historically low approval ratings. While also going from mild resistance to Trump, to backing him (see Lindsay Graham's 180, or the attempt to discredit Mueller). The attempt to repeal Obamacare was another voters won't forget about as well.

Also, isn't the redrawing of districts coming up soon. This is not an election either side wants to lose.

Though I'd also warn democrats not to get arrogant. Trump is historically unpopular, and democrats do have momentum ATM. However this enthusiasm needs to keep going, and democrats need to keep running people.
