What about Midnighter from the Authority. Kind of like the Butcher vs Homelander. I would love something new or original.

I mean this is possible. Everyone is predicting the sequel will be Superman vs the Authority, but some or all of the Authority could be the villains of this film - or they could be a pseudo-villain tackling a threat differently than Superman.

Perhaps someone like Lobo. Superman sees Lobo as a villain and the Authority as being good, but then realise there isn't that much different between them.

Superman is the central character of DC imo and should be for the DCU as well . A rough idea of what I’d like to see for the next Superman:

Superman: Legacy (Lex Luthor, Metallo, Parasite)
Superman: The Last Son (Brainiac, Lex Luthor, Toyman)
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest (Lex Luthor, Joker, Metallo, Harley Quinn)
Trinity (Lobo, Mongul)
JL: The New Frontier (White Martians, Lex Luthor)
JL: Tower of Babel (Legion of Doom)
JL: Crisis on Two Earths (Crime Syndicate)
JL: Crisis on Infinite Earths (Anti-Monitor, Psycho-Pirate)
JL: Final Crisis (Darkseid, Granny Goodness, Kalibak, Desaad, Parademons)
Superman: Man of Tomorrow (Mister Mxyzptlk, Lex Luthor, Bizarro)
Kingdom Come (Gog, Lex Luthor)

I think we have to take clues from Gunn’s comments about superhero fatigue. If every movie is just good guy punches bad guy yay the good guy won over and over then people will get bored.

my point is we will need to think of a villain that challenges superman in more than just strength

I agree, and when you look at Gunn's comic book filmography none of them are good vs evil straight superhero tales.

Almost all of them can. Without knowing the story, we can’t know how, so we can only guess who.

I feel it won't be Braniac simply because the way people want him to be used is so similar to the way that Zod was used in Superman II and Man of Steel (ie, a kind of "hangover" of Krypton and Clark having to choose between being Kryptonian or human).

Zod's whole thing is that he's Kryptonian and has the same powers as Superman. Brainiac doesn't fit that, and there are many incarnations of Brainiac where he isn't from Krypton and has many different forms. With Brainiac you can delve into the subject of A.I. (which is a very topical thing right now).

If anything, I would think that Superboy Prime would be too similar to Zod in the sense that you have a main villain who has the same powers as Superman.

Not using a STAS inspired Brainiac in Man of Steel was such a big mistake IMO.

I am so tired of General Zod. I love Stamp’s portrayal, but didn’t care for Shannon’s. STAS didn’t even use Zod, and it’s my favorite Superman adaptation.

IF we find out Gunn is using Zod again, I will laugh and then I will cry.

Imo, I think in the first film, the villain needs to be homegrown.
Maybe Lex sends one villain after another after superman.
Metallo, parasite, etc.
Frustrated at the failures, Lex seeks help elsewhere, the stars, and makes contact with Brainiac, setting up a sequel.

Gunn can obviously do what he wants, but it will be a HUGE mistake imo, to have another kryptonian villain.

I think Ultra-Humanite is still the most likely.

Something radically different and very in-line with Gunn's suitabilities.

What exactly does Brainiac do? What's his powers and threat?

I am preparing for Intergang and Luthor pulling the strings

I’m going to vote no on Ultra-Humanite. Aside from having a stupid sounding name, I honestly have no interest is seeing Superman fight a giant albino gorilla.

Sounds like Grodd and Ultra-Humanite are in.

Injustice 2 had a very intimidating and sinister take on Grodd, I’d love to see him and Monsieur Mallah. I like him but not a fan of Ultra Humanite for the main villain.

The animated Man of Tomorrow had a pretty solid roster with Lex, Lobo and Parasite. I’d be very happy with that, maybe introduce Momoa as Lobo there.

Ultra-Humanite is more enticing if he will be putting his consciousness into things other than the giant gorilla.

Some random villain thoughts:

1. Lex Luther is a critical character, but ultimately should not be the villain of the first movie. The first movie needs to be *about* Superman, above anything else. You can have Lex Luther as a supporting character, but there needs to be zero ambiguity that Superman drives the plot of the movie. Lex as villain would compete too much with this. He can be the villain for movie 2, along with stuff like Metallo or Bizarro as his muscle.

2. Brainiac is a solid villain I'd love to see in the movies, but probably best saved for later, like the hopeful third movie in a trilogy arc. That said, when he's introduced, absolutely use the TAS Kryptonian AI angle. Brainiac should be a borderline "superhero crossover" villain, someone who exists in a place where Superman can only sort of compete on his own ( my vaguely preferred Superman 3 outline would basically be "Superman and Lex Luther team up to save the world from Brainiac ).

3. Zod is overused, but still has some potential to explore. I wouldn't use him soon, or at least not in one of my first three Superman movies, but if I did use him? I'd lean into a more "Khan Noonien Singh" angle, where he's *not* the unrepentant impossible megalomaniac. He's a ruthless ambitious warlord, but in his own way also loved Krypton and can be dealt with as a person. The denouement of such a story, natch, would not be Zod dead or cast back into the Phantom Zone, but Zod and his followers "trapped" on a suitably habitable red sun planet that is now his to develop. Does he really care about rebuilding Krypton or is it just about personal aggrandizement and conquest? Here is his chance to prove it one way or the other.

So, who *would* I use for Superman Movie 1? Honestly, its not *that* important, because the villain of the first movie shouldn't be important in their own right. The movie is Superman's movie, the villain is just there to be a cinematic manifestation of the challenges of being Superman. The only thing that must be so is that the villain *isn't* directly linked to or caused by Superman. If you use Mongul, then he's not coming to Earth looking for Superman, he's coming to Earth because its the next planet on his path of looting and pillaging. Etc.

I want more than one. Lex as the main villain/brains and either metallo or parasite as the muscle.
Have Brainiac cameo at the end, but still in his ship, heading toward Earth.

Questions for anybody who knows the lore of Darkseid. What is the Omega sanctions? Can Darkseid bring you back from the dead after he vaporizes someone with Omega beams? I think I remember him killing his son or one of his henchmen and bring them back. I remember them explaining that it’s a fate worse than death.

I'm with you here, create a living breathing world like they did with the batman. Have Lex exist, he doesn't have to be the villain. Plant the seed for brainiac. I would personally choose metallo or parasite for the first movie, given that they spoke about Clark being a cub reporter. Best way to do it is Lex pulling the strings in the background.

I would also like to see Gunn put his own spin on some of the existing villains. I think he did a great job with bloodsport and wouldn't mind seeing Idris make a cameo.

I want this too. I hate the out-dated superhero movie model of "villain(s) of the week". There should be numerous established foes. I'd even have had Clark face off against some of them before.

I am also tired of villains being killed off in each movie, I want them to stick around to be able to come back later so that the world has a constant threat available. Good thing Supes doesn't kill.
