Animation Disney's Encanto

Silencio, Bruno!
Probably the villain.

A disappointingly short clip of one of the songs.

They've been saying it since day one! And they're being done by Hamilton himself, Lin-Mauel Miranda! What hole have you been living under?
I haven't followed a Disney movie since Tangled. :(

So you missed out on Frozen, it's sequel and Moana. As well as non-musicals like Wreck-It Ralph (which got me back into Disney animation), it's sequel, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and Raya and the Last Dragon. FOR SHAME, man. Those were great.

Also, Wreck-It Ralph's sequel is home to one of the funniest animation crossover scenes I've EVER seen:

I watched the films I just don't follow their production or news anymore like I used to. I did Frozen when it was still The Snow Queen, but after that I just haven't.

Fair enough. Seriously, that clip I shared is comedy gold. By the way, Tangled has a sequel TV show with many of the same actors returning and even Alan Menkin involved on occasional songs (he got an Emmy for one, in fact) and it's pretty damn good too.

But regardless, yes, Encanto's a musical from the same directors as Tangled with Lin-Manuel Miranda doing the songs. Should be fun!

Yeah I heard about Tangled the Series. I haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but I did see the clip where she recites the other incantation and seemingly kills all living things around her.

I do hope Disney branches out on composers and lyricists. Not that I don't like Miranda, but I hope for a diverse group like the Renaissance films. Yes I know the majority were Menken.

Well, we have the Lopezes who are ridiculously catchy. Robert was infamous involved on "Avenue Q", aka the "raunchy Muppets" musical the gave us "The Internet Is For Porn". You wonder why "Do You Wanna Build A Snowman" and "Let It Go" became huge memes? He and his wife are why.

The reviews are good for this so far but I might wait until this hits Disney+ in another 2-3 months. It feels like I've seen a new movie in theaters practically every week for the past two months and I'm starting to feel a little burnt out.

I guess Disney learned their lesson about simultaneous releasing on D+ due to Black Widow.

Yeah, I don't think that's making a comeback anytime soon, same with the day and date HBO Max releases after this year. But I also justify it like this: For my girlfriend and I to see this in a theater factoring in snacks and everything, the price is going to come out to around $50, which is more than half the yearly subscription fee for Disney+. At that point I might as well just wait until it's on D+ because there's a very quick turnaround window. Shang-Chi was on there two months after it came out in theaters and Jungle Cruise was on there just over three months after theaters. Obviously for MCU films I'm always going to choose to see them in theaters first but with everything else with the exception of future Star Wars films I might be a bit pickier.

I think we all know the real reason of the HBO Max releases... Most of the movies this year were not good.

It was partially that but it was still looking very doom and gloomy for movie theaters last December/January when they made the announcement. But yes, their slate wasn't all that great. Even something as critically acclaimed as Dune probably wouldn't have performed that much better domestically even without the pandemic.

I loved this, biggest gripe was it was kinda hard to hear the lyrics to some of the songs. The first song especially was hard to understand and it’s the song that introduces us to the family.

Planning on seeing the movie on Friday, but the full plot synopsis on Wikipedia makes this sound very underwhelming. It really just sounds like a musical family drama and no real reason's given for the conflict (the house losing it's magic and falling apart). The most recent trailer made it seem like there'd be more of an adventure element to it and it doesn't sound like it. Can someone who's seen the movie please clarify things without spoilers?

Also, on a side note, what is Disney's aversion lately with having any sort villains in their animated movies, especially in regards to their musicals? They don't need to be "sympathetic" or be a twist, either. There's nothing wrong with having an obvious villain from the start and making them evil and hammy as all hell. We haven't had a villain song since 2010 technically! What's the aversion? Did Loki's popularity really give them the wrong idea that people don't want straight-up scenery-chewing villains anymore?
