Disney's live-action "Mulan"

This business model only works for that target audience that literally cannot wait another day to see a movie.

Most people aren't wired like that. This is niche at best.

It goes for every popular brand. The vast majority of people who watch films are casuals, even something as big as Avengers Endgame the vast majority of people wouldn’t have watched every MCU film in theatres before the ending.

And that Seems like an unnecessary amount of effort when it's gonna be $6 like 2 months after release. Really? Timed watches and a schedule? But have it

How hard is it to say "Ill watch it at 11am, you watch it at 3pm, you watch it at 6pm" 24hrs in a day after all.

And what Disney movie was $6 to rent after it was available to rent? Event heir dvds/blu rays take forever to come below the $19.99 mark.

So basically it's $30 for access it on Disney+ for a period of time before it becomes open to everyone anyway?

You still don’t own it for $30.
True, your only own it as long as you’re a subscriber. Still, it’s a different thing than “$30 for a 48 hour rental” which has been the assumption so far. Like I said earlier, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

So they’re basically gonna have to revamp the app to allow for this purchase option, right? If so, prepare to pay extra for more things on Disney+ in the future, including things we likely wouldn’t have had to before.
This is why I really hope this bombs. Imagine if they had done this with Hamilton...

I get the idea of 30 bucks, because the idea is it isn't for one person but theoretically a "family unit". But it isn't practical and just proves why theater releases are going to be the way to go.

They're using the video game pricing model for this thing like it's a must have. If it was a new avengers movie I could possibly see justification because of the hype and ongoing character arcs, but it's Mulan.

Except for a video game, you pay $60-65 at launch and you get to keep it not RENT IT. Plus you potentially get online content that can last for a long time as well.

EDIT:

Even if I get permanent access as long as I have Disney+, I'm still not paying $30.

Yeah as harsh as this might sound I hope it all backfires on them big time, because this being a success could have dangerous ramification for a lot of future blockbusters. I'm more worried now than ever about films like Tenet or Dune which I know are meant to be seen on a bigscreen and if Mulan is a hit on streaming I can see more studios definitely trying to follow suit and just throwing them out there as quickly as possible.

I'd watch Tenet and Dune at home in an second, but if it is at the cost of theater release? Nah. I love watching stuff at home, prefer it to going to the theater most of the time. But there is something about the movie theater that makes certain movies and experiences special and I don't want to lose that.

I don’t know what the answer is. The whole situation re: movies really hurts my heart though :csad:
Yeah, I am with you. This year feels so strange. We are in August and while I have watched Hamilton like 15 times at this point, a summer without movies has hurt my soul.

I thought I’d have seen Black Widow and Tenet and I don’t even remember what else was supposed to be out by now.

I find it way harder to muster the motivation to sit down and watch a new movie on my computer, plus there’s so many more interruptions and distractions. This whole time, since the last movie I saw (Birds of Prey) in the theater, the only movie reviews I’ve written since February are Hamilton and 7500.

Oh if Hamilton had come out AFTER this development, I am 100% confident they would've charged for it too.
I know. :omg:

I was thinking about this, and what I think might work better. Maybe they could have done a thing where you gain access to Mulan if you already have a year subscription or if you get one. While that would be more money for new subscribers, it would be a far better value then a 30 dollar rental fee. Plus you get your hooks into more potential costumers long term.
