Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Growing up as a little kid, Mulan was one of my favorite Disney animated movies growing up, Mulan was and still is my favorite Disney princess, and “Reflection” might just be my favorite Disney song (all of which, but especially the last one, I’m figuring out I probably liked for reasons related to who I think I’m lately discovering about my identity as a person). Also, her selfless motivation for wanting to go to war (protecting her father), and her ultimate capability to hold her own as a warrior in battle, just made her the coolest and best characterized Disney princess in my book. This movie means so much to me as a person.

So, it can not be understated how thoroughly excited I am for this movie.

I also appreciate that this adaptation is kind of doing its own thing by drawing from the original legend and Wuxia films, and not being a straight beat-for-beat retelling of the animated film. That already puts it above the other live-action Disney remakes for me.

P.s— Could someone make me an avvy of the poster, from just above the Disney logo up to the very top? I would very much appreciate that.

Not having Shang in this might be a dealbreaker but nothing in the trailer turned me off too much.

I'm not thrilled about cutting out Shang, especially since it sounds like they're replacing him with another love interest, so why not just.....let him be Shang?

this is the same actress from the 2008 Jet Li Jackie Chan movie? she is 31 years old? how ?

Honestly my biggest concern is the director. I wish they had tried harder to get a director like John Woo or Zhang Yimou. Directors that actually have experience with this sort of material, historical chinese epics, and experience with large martial arts action set pieces. Niki Caro doesnt have a thing in her resume that recommends her for this sort of film.

Mulan has dead eyes. :funny:

I think it looks pretty, but I am already worried about the Crouching Tiger lite of it all. Both Mulan and Crouching Tiger are two of my favorites. So them being mashed together should really click for me. But there was something about how lightweight it seemed in comparison that turned me off. That and the lack of intensity on Mulan's part. She just seems there.

But it's the first teaser. I guess we will see where it goes. If there really is no Mushu or music... ugh.

Depending on how test audiences react Disney might rethink that decision.

Frankly I think that's a complete waste of time. What if the actors can't sing? They just wasted a ton of time and have to rush recording songs after test audiences want them in the movie.

They also have to reshoot scenes that didn't have music and do a big song and dance number.

More money and time wasted when they should have done it in the first place

Do you think they can do all this in two to three weeks? If deemed necessary and by test audiences? I don't think so.

It takes months.

Did you just present an argument, then get in an argument with yourself over it?

Wow the trailer looks great and very pretty.

And Mulan... looks fierce in this live action take (she wasn't in Once Upon a Time).

Jasmine is Middle Eastern. I guess you could consider that Asian. but when I say Asian, I mean Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.

I guess you meant East Asian. But yeah technically Jasmine is Asian as well, or West Asian.

Looks like a pretty standard Asian fantasy movie.

Adding a little wuxia into Mulan. Color me intrigued.

I have no problem with the songs not being included. Their nice, but unnecessary. Mulan's strength is in the story, not the songs. Eddie Murphy's great, but Mushu is totally unnecessary for a live-action adaptation. I couldn't care less if it doesn't "feel like Disney" as long as it's good.

It ain't like they having DC movie failures
Ouch :(
I don't really care to who. I find them mostly wholly pointless and bad. Trying way too hard to ride the nostalgia bandwagon. Also with terrible singing.
I mean, no one's making you watch them, so why should this be an issue at all?

Bae Liu Yifei started her career in wuxia epics, so it only makes sense :ilv:

The strength of Mulan was how it brought all it's elements together, to make a great little film. Kids growing up, quoting Musha and singing "I'll Make a Man Out of You" happened for a reason. Just because you find something "unnecessary" doesn't make it true. If you couldn't careless, that is fine. That doesn't have to apply to anyone else.

Or maybe you should just take my opinion as my own and not take it personally. Where in my opinion did I say that it should apply to others? Where in my opinion did I say others should think like I do? Where did I say that it was true and others were false? You make a lot of assumptions there.

After multiple nearly shot for shot remakes its good that Disney is trying to do something more true to asian cinema and different from the cartoon. Make a historical epic closer to the source material.
