Disney's live-action "Mulan"

My favorite part about that guy's tweets is when he calls out those who like to scream "cultural appropriation" when it serves their agenda.

Goes back to my theory that the removal of the songs has more to do with appealing to China than anything else. Honestly, Disney are kind of in a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation. Adhere to the animated movie and lose a bunch of Chinese coin, or remove all the things that Western audiences loved from the animated film and risk losing box office at home. Something tells me the results of the film will please neither side.

I mean it's a Disney movie first and foremost, so it does have to have some wackiness to it. I get that the story is pretty much a sacred cow to most people in China but it's also being based on the animated adaptation they did so there has to be some liberties.

I really liked the trailer and am interested in the direction they're taking this.

I confess that China money will always trump any other country's box office. If you create something and it makes it big in China your ass is pretty much set for life.

My understanding is that Hollywood studios typically “net” 25% of the China box office. (Compare: ~40% for other foreign markets and ~55% for domestic.) So although a strong showing in China is important for gross BO bragging rights (worldwide), profitability is a different question. (Note @DarkKnight88 comment about Warcraft. It was HUGE in China, but bombed everywhere else.) Now, studios (apparently?) can improve their net take in China via Chinese co-producers/co-investors. But I don’t know if Disney has this arrangement with Mulan.

Keep Reflection and I'll Make Man Out of You and we cool fam.

It never surprises me when the avengers cast have to go to China because it’s a huge market for Disney/marvel

Who remembers the Chinese version of iron man 3? They didn’t even care for the 2 minutes scenes added in with Chinese actors

Or the recent mission impossible movies partially financed by alibaba pictures and China movie network

Mission impossible 5 even had a chinese actress who got no screen time but was in the opening credits

Even if it doesn’t do well domestically they mostly want the foreign profit from China

So we’ll lose the songs but appease China

I mean I hope it's not too straightforward and there is some comedy there. Though usually a lot of the humor comes from the supporting sidekicks, either human or magical creature.

Yao, Ling and Chien Po are still in the movie and hopefully they're not too different from their animated version.

The fact that this looks more like a historical epic adaptation of the legend than a remake of the cartoon is the primary reason I'm excited for this. Be a Man is my bop for sure, but staying true to the source is far more interesting.

I wonder if, if they’re focusing on making it more historical, it might be more likely to be turned into a franchise with sequels. More likely than the other Disney properties

However, the thing is that movies don't achieve so much money in other foreign market.

So, 25% from China will still probably be more than 40% from other countries.

That said, at the end, the film will need to be a success in USA, but it isn't impossible they try to attract new fans with a new version (like Jungle Book).

Mulan wasn't an incredible sucess movie if you compare with past movies. So, Disney probably think they can change mores things.

i'm looking forward to this.
i think disney is trying to strike a balance between being closer to the original source material (less fantasy/humor elements) and paying homage to the 1998 animated film.

so i can see them throwing in a few small easter eggs to appease the fans of the 1998 film, but then trying to make it more a historical adventure epic.

and i am fine with that.

fans of the older disney film will always have that, it is not going anywhere.

trailer looks very good and no doubt that movie will own the asian markets (for which it was made)...but I miss some Disney fairy tale vibes.
It looks like an epic historical movie, but not like a Disney movie at all
