I'm all for scary mermaids.
It's David Lowery. He's going to make this as much like The Lighthouse as Disney will let him.lol sure.
"We’re still shooting it and I don’t want to jinx it up, but I feel like David Lowery really knows…not that I’ve worked on huge movies before, but he knows what he’s doing," the comedian/actor tells us during a Zoom conversation about Pixar's Luca. "It’s not just a big budget movie that’s just big and there’s some stunts…there’s a lot of moving parts to Peter Pan ... I don’t see any holes, either. Sometimes as an actor, you’re like, ‘Hmmm,’ but with Peter Pan, it’s all A-team. What David Lowery has brought is grounded in an authenticity, so it’s not breaking any of the rules of Peter Pan."
Gaffigan goes on to say that while "the cartoon version is problematic," it remains "a sacred story to people." He promises that Lowery has "kept that authenticity and there’s nothing cute added on — kind of like, ‘Now, he’s a lawyer!’ It’s none of that stuff. So, it’s kept that authenticity and it’s gonna be the most grounded one [most likely referring to Disney's roster of remakes]. Grounded meaning that [it] leans towards authenticity. So, I think people will be excited."
A new take on the classic tale of Neverland is coming to Disney+ next year. In the film, Jim Gaffigan's Smee will stand alongside Jude Law’s Captain Hook. We’re certainly curious how this pair’s dynamic will play out in Peter Pan and Wendy. When CinemaBlend spoke to the actor, here’s what he said about the movie:
What I will say is it's directed by David Lowery, who’s done a lot of great stuff, but he did Pete’s Dragon, so I think he understands some of this. And to your question about the relationship [between Captain Hook and Smee], it’s not the same as the cartoon version, obviously. There’s a complexity to it that I think people are really going to like.
Peter Pan is a popular story that has been remade many times since Disney memorably made its own version in 1953. There’s Steven Spielberg’s Hook, the 2003 version from Universal and 2015’s Joe Wright iteration starring Garrett Hedlund as a young James Hook. As Gaffigan explained, there’s a certain new depth Peter Pan and Wendy will explore. As he continued:
There’s a complexity in all the relationships that remains authentic, but also is more grounded. In other words, there’s a reasoning behind Hook and Smee’s relationship, there’s a reasoning behind Peter [Pan’s] and everyone involved. It’s not a mystery solved kind of thing, but there’s a complexity to it that makes sense and is unique to this film.
Was so hoping to see something on Disney plus Day. After all it should be released before Pinochio
It’s a Disney Plus only release - they announced that last year during Investors Day
Bob Chapek only wants to sell Disney+ at this point regardless if it makes business sense or not.
