World Doc Ock's lair

Gangland was fabulous, wasn't it. Pure vintage Doc Ock greatness.

"Treacheeeerrrrrrrry!!!!!!"

I love that episode! The opera fits perfectly. And I love that Otto betrays them not less than two minutes after they did xD

"E tu, Octopus?"

"What can I say, an opportunity is an opportunity."

Haha, priceless :woot:

Oh, I had a quick, unrelated question: Where did the names (Harry, Larry, Mo, and Flo) of Otto's tentacles come from? I have heard that everywhere and wasn't sure of the source XD

I read ASM #600. I downloaded it, pretty risky considering it's VERY, VERY illegal now in my country. But it was just a comic book, I don't think that's a big deal. The big deal is movies, tv shows and music.

Nvm I stopped reading Spider-Man a couple of issues after OMD(thought they became extremely boring) but I read this issue. It was, decent. Ock will for sure not die I mean, even if he did he will still come back from the dead in some way anyway. But I'm not too much into new comics lately. I usually read the classics from the 60s and 70s nowadays.

And I also thought of posting all my Doc Ock videos in this post considering you all enjoyed them so much so here it goes:

I keep thinking about ASM 600; the more I do, the more I dislike what was done with Ock.

The whole "i'm dying early because of all the radiation in my system" was, as I mentioned, done in Spider-Girl. And it was done quite well, too, with a Master-Planner-esque arc that had Otto behind the scenes for much of it, plus a final showdown in an underwater lair. Ock's tentacles were separated from him (which is hardly a handicap since he doesn't need to be attached to utilize them) and Ock himself was in a high-tech wheelchair/life support device; he was in the late stages of cancer. He looked ill, but not creepy. I wish I could provide scans, but that's one of the comics I have in storage right now. Anyway, it worked well and felt satisfying, even if it did end up with Otto in a coma.

The whole taking over NYC with his mind and augmented technopathy? It was done in an episode of Spectacular Spider-Man! The season 2 Master Planner story, IIRC. And done a whole heck of a lot better. So, another thumbs-down there.

And this whole redesign thing. I don't mind the extra tentacles; it's thematic. But trying to make him creepy? That's NOT thematic. Comic book characters are all about theme; you can't just slap on some stuff willy-nilly and expect it to work, especially not with long-standing, long-established characters like Doctor Octopus.

For an example, some years ago in DC, they decided to make Dr. Light a real badass; he'd been dumbed down and turned into a joke for many years. Now, there's a lot you can do with a villain that can control the visible electromagnetic spectrum to make him badass. You can make him smarter, more creative with his powers, more ambitious. But what did the writer choose to do? He had Dr. Light rape Sue Dibny, the wife of the Elongated Man. Utterly mundane, utterly "ugh", utterly not within theme for a comic book supervillain.

It feels the same with this new design of Ock's. Otto isn't supposed to be creepy and alien and weird; he's a narcissistic, egotistical super-sciencist with metal tentacles who may or may not be overweight. Sheesh, even the "I can control the METAL" for Ultimate Ock was kept in-theme by having him always create tentacles out of that metal. This thing in ASM 600 just feels random and, considering that it's not going to be permanent, pointless.

I ask for Oreos, and Marvel gives me moldy bread. Feh.

OctoHaz, I'm in almost toal agreement with you in regards to Doc Ock. Like I said earlier, Ock is not some freak show horror monster, and he deserves better than being reduced to 'Mister Freeze with radioactivity'. Much like the Land of the Lost film, this story, and its' take on Doc Ock, displays an almost criminal failure of imagination.

Doctor Light was reduced to a buffon after he raped Sue Dibny. When he was returned to normal and remembered what the League did to him, it made not just him more badass, but the other DCU villains as well.

And wouldn't it be great to see what Geoff Johns could do with Spider-Man?

Right, but that was a bit of retroactive continuity. The writers had buffooned him a long time ago, and then Metzer (I think that was the writer's name) came up with this reason why Light'd been such a doof -- because he'd been mindburned after what he did to Sue.

Either way, it was a stupid and distasteful way to upgrade a villain's threat-level. :whatever:

*Steps over all the ASM #600 hate* :oldrazz:

It's hard to choose, man, because I love 'em all. But I'm very partial to the one about Doc Ock's tentacles. I love seeing all the various styles they've had on screen.

The first video about Spectacular's Doc Ock is also really cool. Looking at some of his best moments, and lord there was so many.

So, guys when do you think we'll see Ock again? I mean, The Gauntlet is coming up, but I don' remember seeing Ock's tentacles on the cover.

@Brian: Ok, thanks for clearing that up :woot:

@OctoHaz: Well Said

@SpideyTheBest: I love your vids! Thanks for posting em here, I thought they were awesome when I found em on youtube :) (I'm Saphira144, by the way) Oh, and it I were to give you my email, would you maybe drop the link of where you downloaded the comic at? It's not quite so illegal here, as long as you don't want to sell it

If ASM continues at 3 issues per month, then I'd say we'll see him some time next year. He did leave this story promising to something terrible, and factoring Spidey into his plans, too.

I think the next 10-15 issues of ASM will be used to bring back more classic villains.

Uh...Since all the comic stores in my area sold out within minutes and I was never able to buy any...

could you note me with the link or just email it to me? :otto:

Good news...I got myself a Spider-Man 2 picture autographed by Otto's cinematic avatar himself! I love you ebay!

OK, so where do we go from here? If you were given the assignment to pick up where #600 leaves off, what do you think Otto would do? What Doc Ock story would you do?

Well, I'd continue on with the theme from #600. Ock still wants to leave his mark on the world, but he now factors Spider-Man into his plans, and keeps his promise of doing something really terrible, since his "gift" to mankind was rejected in #600. I'm talking something MAJOR scale terrible. He still has control of his octobots.

I'd also have Ock find the inevitable cure for his condition. Either by transferring his consciousness to a new clone of his old body, or curing his dying body. Something along those lines. But I'd also have him make improvements on his new body, namely curing the flaws of his previous body, so it's no longer damaged by radiation, and it has a much higher endurance for blows from super powered beings.

I mean there's no point in Ock going thru all of this if he doesn't correct these flaws.

I'd do the story where Otto and I get married, but that's just me...

Otto always did have a way with you fangirls :oldrazz:

Lord, am I the only rabid fangirl who ISN'T physically attracted to the man? o_O

The central idea for the idea I had was Otto in a desperate search for a cure. He attacks Captain America and Wolverine and obtains samples of their blood. Finding nothing useful in the Super Soldier serum or Wolverines' DNA, Otto prepares for death. Then he makes an astounding discovery, there is one thing that can cure him: the strength enhancing formula developed by Mendel Stromm that turned Norman Osborn into the Green Goblin. Otto obtains the formula and studies it. He learns that with the formula, dose is the key. Otto uses the formula at a lower dose than what Osborn used, and it works. Otto is still left emaciated, but the radiation has been purged from his system and the healing factor in the Goblin formula is slowly restoring his body to normal, Otto goes into hiding just as Osborn finds out about what happened, thus setting up an eventual Octopus/Goblin War

:wow:

Also, Otto would then have the healing factor, only not as potent. It would still be able to heal him from severe injuries, though.

So what's ol' Spidey been doing the whole time Ock is out there looking for a cure? Dealing with the super-villains Otto broke out of jail and hired to keep Peter distracted.

And after Otto cures himself, he modifies the formula, removing the components that produce harmful side effects (insanity) and enhancing the components that provide superhuman strength. He then gives it to Angelina Brancale. She comes out of her coma transformed into a 7 foot tall blonde warrior goddess, Stunner reborn!

The Green Goblin, enraged at Octavius' invasion of his turf, tracks Ock down after being on his trail for a while. The Goblin bursts in on Ottos' secret lab and attacks. Otto strikes back with unprecidented might, informing Osborn that Doctor Octopus once again wields the full unparalled power of his adamantium tentacles!
