"Tuesday Q&A: Tom DeFalco
The veteran scribe discusses bringing Mayday Parker to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited with THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-GIRL"

Here's the interview with Tom

Just for everyone to know that The Spectacular Spider-Girl feature on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited is the SAME Feature that will be appearing in Amazing Spider-Man Family.
This is confirmed in the actual article and on the Spider-Girl Message Boards by Tom DeFalco.

You just have two different options to choose from:

Amazing Spider-Man Family - The only place to read The Spectacular Spider-Girl strip in print.

Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited - Read The Spectacular Spider-Girl strip online.

It's the same strip just two different outlets to choose from for now.

I'm at mixed feelings about this, I'm glad that Mayday's adventures are continuing but I hope this doesn't mean that the strip will be scrap from ASMF in the future or being our only option to read Spider-Girl if ASMF is cancelled.

I'm just glad they didn't completely cancel her this time around. It's nice to see, that even though her fanbase couldn't support the book to Marvel's standards, Marvel recognizes the power of the character. Gives some hope to the fans of the oft-forgotten b-d listers out there.

Well, I'll be getting ASM Family, and I may as well subscribe to SSG, as well. I know they're the same book, but Marvel will undoubtedly look at the number os subscribers and the numbers of copies sold of ASM:Family. If both spike when Mayday appears, then Marvel won't be able to deny that her fans are with her.

Of course, I've noticed that about 2/3 of ASM Family is either crap or reprints...aside from Mr and Mrs Spider-Man and the upcoming inclusion of Spider-Girl. There are the occasionally other cool stories in there...and the artwork is always pretty.

I don't mind the reprints... we recently got to read the Bart Hamilton GG III 5 parter, and while I remember reading it like it was yesterday (1977 methinks... :o ), it's cool to see it in print today.

:yay:

I dig the reprints as well, actually. I've read *most* of the ones they've reprinted, but it's usually in the Essentials or something, and it's cool to have them in color!

So this is where the Spider-Girl thread is! (Was thinking of starting a fan thread for her in the Spidey-World forums...maybe still will...)

I've gotten back into collecting the digest graphic novels; relatively out of order, but still, I have more! :woot:

Nice to know Spider-Girl isn't completely cancelled, and I daresay she's in a kinda exciting role with exploring new distribution pathways online.

And I read #30, the "last" print of full-on Spider-Girl (her next print installments will just be snippets in ASM Family, right?) and it was cool. Figures that for a real bang they had to bring back the original Goblin. :word:

The stories that will be appearing in ASM Family are going to be the same as the ones that will be online on Marvel's Digital Comics.
Just that the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited will publish the issue two weeks before it sees print in ASMF.
Tomorrow "the Spectacular Spider-Girl" #1 debuts online then two weeks later the story will be printed in ASM Family.
Two options to read it.

Great to see another fan of Mayday on the board.

Whether you read it on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited or waited patiently for it to be printed in Amazing Spider-Man Family #5(Like Me), Mayday Parker is back!

The Spectacular Spider-Girl #1 opens up with our girl checking out the headquarters of the Order of the Goblin in hopes to get some answers to whether or not she is the original May Parker or the clone.
From the First Page to the Last, DeFalco and the Frenz/Buscema team set the pace for SSG by moving the story along, setting up subplots in the background and developing the sibling rivalry between May and April.

It's great to have Mayday Parker back and to continue where we left off from ASG #30. I enjoyed the new addition to the Parker family, Mayday's possible clone, April.
May and April's dynamic is definitely the most satisfying part of the issue with April providing a great foil for Mayday at home, school and during her crime fighting activities.

The big mystery is set up when a young lady comes by the Parker household claiming to be the daughter of Ben Reilly. Determine to find out who is this woman masquerading as her Uncle's kid, Mayday with April tagging along, attempts to track Gwen down before being side track leaving us with the last page cliffhanger.

Subplots establish are Silvio Barraca aka 'Silverback' igniting a gang war between himself and the Black Tarantula. The Black Tarantula himself has resume a love-hate relationship with Arana, who has moved in with him along with the addition of Fury becoming a lose cannon. With Fury's knowledge of Peter Parker being Spider-Man she could exploit this info against Mayday and her family.

It was great seeing the high school cast again, with them setting up May and Wes on a date and April introducing herself to high school gang. Mayday's friends begin to ask questions about her new 'Cousin'.

Overall life has gotten alittle bit more interesting for Mayday Parker at home and as Spider-Girl.
I wait impatiently for the next issue.

Anyone else pick this up or read on Digital Comics Unlimited? If so what are your thoughts and opinions?

I picked this up Saturday, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! The next issue feels like it is so far away!!! The sad thing is, I feel like I'm just paying a dollar or 2 more a month to read Spider-Girl, as that is all I really read in ASM:Family....before that, it was just to read the "Mr and Mrs Parker" stories....which I see are no more, now. :(

I guess that would make the book almost half married Peter Parker, which is more than Marvel wants to give us.

I thought it was great. There's so much duality potential there that was ignored with the close of the Clone Saga. The best partner fer a Spidey is a Spidey, by far.

And hey, cheer up, Shin...ya get a double-dose of May, albeit one's a hog but at least it's by DeFalco and just as good. Swiney-Girl, anyone?

Yeah, I do miss the Mr & Mrs Spider-Man strip. Tom DeFalco did say those stories will affect future storylines in Specatcular Spider-Girl but I do hope it's brought back because it would complement the Spider-Girl title.
It was refreshing to see Peter and MJ as a married couple jugging school, finding work, in addition to Peter's activities as Spider-Man all the while trying to raise Baby May.

Plus with Tom playing around with Ben Reilly's legacy in this storyline, I hope this will eventually lead to Mayday learning just how closely related she is to Reilly Tyne/Darkdevil and Kaine.

Spider-Girl's fans have SPOKEN.

It's funny to me, Mayday's book didn't have enough sales, and it wasn't promoted, but it's seeing successful numbers now that its in ASMF. Sounds to me like, when you combine all those that read Spider-Girl with all the people who were buying ASMF, the numbers suddenly get pretty good!

Either way, if it makes Mayday successful, then I'm cool with it! Whatever keeps her around!

Spectacular Spider-Girl #2 was release today on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, will see print in Amazing Spider-Man Family #6 next week.

Here is a preview art:

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS
Continuing where we left off from the first issue of the Spectacular Spider-Girl, Gwen Reilly is dead.
The two big questions are who was she and who killed her? Mayday questions April but she denies killing her only to have both May and April's spider-sense go off. That prompts them to check the roofs but who or what that cause the tingle is gone.
If that weren't bad enough, the spider tracer left on Gwen's body is now log into evidence and Phil Urich has gotten a quick match on Gwen's prints, saying Peter is going to freak the minute he sees the report.

Mayday, investigating the murder, enlists the help of Darkdevil. She informs him about Gwen Reilly, leading to an nice exhange with Darkdevil telling May that her father doesn't know 'everything'.
Now, from the first issue of SSG, I wanted Darkdevil to get involve because the storyline relates to his father and with the possilibity of Reilly finally coming out of the shadows to reveal himself to the Parker Family that he is Ben Reilly's son.

Now, Mayday, where do we start with you........you have to investigate the murder of a girl who claims to be your Uncle's daughter, you have your possible clone to content with and you forgot to meet up with Wes. It just doesn't get easier for May.
April, again continues to be a breath of fresh air in this series. She obviously takes after MJ, being the party girl who is looking for fun, and she also waltzes off with Wes.
Poor May.

Other developments are the gang war between the Black Tarantula and Silverback. The Tarantula and Arana share a very good scene together with Chesbro leaving a file for BT that hinted of a old villain who appears in the cliffhanger of this issue. His animated incarnation in Spectacular Spider-Man made a big impact in that respective medium and Silverback enlists his services in his war with the Black Tarantula.
The mystery whereabouts of Fury the Goblin Queen continue and we see Rene(Goblin groupie) dropping off a student to Midtown High, so the seeds are planted for a little more high school drama for May.
Overall, 16 pages with alot of developments across the board. Now, how long do we have to wait for issue 3?

Old-school pacing, baby. You can't produce that kinda quality stuff writin' like Bendis.

Having the stories being only 16 pages have not affected the title at all.
Other news on Spider-Girl is that Mayday is getting the Minimate treatment:

^^ Whoa, those are awesome! :spidey::up:

ALso, it's great ot know Spider-Man Family #5 sold out, because it proves how awesome Spider-Girl was/is. I had to order issue # 5 off of My Comic Shop.com, which i actually have yet to recieved since I ordered it last week. A friend of mine, who actually owns/works at my LCS, put it aside for me before I even asked him to. Really thankfull of that.

Can't wait to read this, and it looks like we are getting a fantastic fight between May and Tombstone. Plus one more reason April is a breath of fresh air in the series.
