May be blind, ...but he is not playing a Blind Jedi.

Rogue One is set in a time when the Jedi are basically extinct — there are no warriors with “magical powers” to save the day. “It’s about the fact that God’s not coming to save us,” said Edwards. “The absence of the Jedi hangs over the movie.” So this could be a very different Star Wars movie, one that features more “reality” than we’ve ever seen, and potentially some slightly morally murky characters, from a moral perspective.

Or is he?

Some minor observations: He is not just a "staff" wielder.
I noticed he's got another weapon slung across his back.
You can see it has a gun grip towards the bottom, and extends out past his other arm.
Almost looks like it references a bazooka/grenade type launcher. (which means nothing in Sci-fi)

Just thought it was interesting, that what is being read as blind warrior, has what looks like might be an aiming and projectile weapon.
Also his wrist guard, seems to have a small projectile shaft on it.

Many have been championing the idea that he's a Jedi,/force user, despite the director saying there are none, or "magic" users in this movie.
If he's going to be a blind, maybe he senses sound/sonar. That the staff coupled with the little device strapped to his body, might emit a type of sonar, when he strikes the staff to the ground, or walls, etc.. And with that he will be able to "see", like a dolphin or bat, or that guy in hell's kitchen.

Also just an observation, but on on the black-draped table, you can see among other things two props of Yen's staff next to Wen's "machine-gun" (see Wen's thread) .
And what appears to be Yen's other weapon, which looks quite complex. The handle maybe towards the top.

Besides the staff, he also has a weapon slung across his back.

Looks as if it has a grip for firing, also has two "arms" that seem like they can extend and splay out.
Maybe it creates some kind of energy bow.

Dude is totally channeling Daredevil.

Troopers let the weak "blind man" walk in... he takes off their heads.

I imagine the little device on his belt emits "sonar" allowing him to "see"

He is awesome. I hope he has a big role in Rogue One.

I hope he finds a lightsaber at one point and that Mads Mikkelson is an Inquisitor. Could be an amazing fight scene.

I hope not, I like the weapons he has. He seems like a unique character doing his own thing.
This is supposed to be the dark times when the Rebels are going it alone, sans Jedi
Before A New Hope(Luke) brings the Jedi (and their weapons) back into the fray.

EDIT: Never mind.

I saw the trailer, had no interest...but if Donnie Yen is in this and has a significant role I have to reconsider.

The number one reason I am hype for Rogue One before they even drop the trailer.

Your eyes can deceive you. Don't trust them. ... Stretch out with your feelings!

Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe, pronounced chi-RUT, is perhaps the most interesting new addition as it’s been revealed he’s not actually a jedi but a man “devoted to their ways” who has used his spiritual beliefs to overcome his own physical handicap of blindness. “Chirrut falls into the category of being a warrior monk,” says Kennedy. “He very much still believes in everything the Jedi were about.”

As for the original quote:

Rogue One is set in a time when the Jedi are basically extinct — there are no warriors with “magical powers” to save the day. “It’s about the fact that God’s not coming to save us,” said Edwards. “The absence of the Jedi hangs over the movie.” So this could be a very different Star Wars movie, one that features more “reality” than we’ve ever seen, and potentially some slightly morally murky characters, from a moral perspective.

There is a fine line here. :cwink: :woot:

OMG how many does he take out? Zatoichi on his best day didn't have that body count.
Looks like he cleared up the whole street.

I wonder if that's the only weapon he uses in that fight. I mean I'm sure you could knock someone out with a staff but these guys are wearing helmets so there's got to be a lot of power behind each of those swings.

This is a universe where non-Jedi have otherwise demonstrated extreme feats of piloting and marksmanship. A badass martial artist able to destroy a squad of soldiers with a staff, despite being blind? Not out of the question, IMO.

Being Force Sensitive, but not Jedi, is totally believable.
