Dr. Lecter Invites you to Dinner. The ''Hannibal'' Thread

I recall Abed having Aspegers briefly.

They've implied has Aspergers and the closest they've ever come is Jeff stating in the pilot "You have Aspergers!"

Seriously though Matt, I'm not really trying to get into this any deeper. I've stated my opinion on the subject and if you're not willing to concede at all neither am I and we'll just have to agree to disagree although I do get what everybody means when they say they're using autism and Aspergers as a way to ground super powers in reality and even to a non-believable degree and are misrepresenting it. All I was doing was trying to make sense of Will's conflicting behaviors, nothing more and I absolutely under no circumstances am not trying to offend anybody. I usually don't care about that sort of thing but I love being a part of the SHH community and I treat it with a bit more respect and hold it in higher regards when it comes to intelligent discussion than I do something like Facebook or whatever. So can we just mutually bow out of this respectfully without getting up in arms about it?

Btw has anyone started eating their meals with the grace and suave of how Hannibal eats his meals?then savouring the taste after every bite?

I think I'll try it. Everyone else will be finished three hours before me, but damn it if I won't look elegant eating my grilled cheese.

Don't forget the three-piece suit to go with that grilled cheese. I suggest a navy blue with an orange tie (assuming it is cheddar; if it is swiss or mozzarella, wear a silver tie).

For accompanying music, the following sonata goes well with melted dairy products. Best accompanied with doritos and a Dr. Pepper (no Coke, that would be an abomination to the senses):

I'm actually glad there is a bit of debate/concern regarding that whole "Where are you on the spectrum" scene as it struck me as a bit awkward too. I agree that Asperger's is a real buzz word these days and many writers describe socially awkward or ingenious characters as having it just to let you know they're not jerks and that they have a legit reason for the way they act. Unfortunately, most writers probably don't do sufficient research on Asperger's/Autism and end up ticking off folks who fall on the spectrum/know people who do. Also is it me or wasn't that sort of rude for Crawford to ask Will that question so abruptly and early on. Seems like a real Asperger's thing to do there, Crawford! ;P

Hopefully it was just a lame tacked on discourse used to legitimize Graham's awkwardness in the pilot and the show strays away from such diagnoses in the future. Here's hoping the show keeps getting better and better and we have a real winner on our hands! :D

It will probably get cancelled though...

It was rude but Crawford needed to get straight to the point, he doesn't have time for manners, women are dying. Finally saw the first episode I liked it alot. Love all the main actors, they're all phenomenal. I like Will vision though it was the cause of some confusion for me because I don't know if we're in his vision if what I'm seeing is true some of the time. Especially the ending, I thought that was all Will vision but it ended up being true. Maybe that was their intention or maybe it was just me but I didn't like that too much. Really loved the little hints of Dr. Lector being the killer we all know and love but at the same time they could easily explain its not him.

I just ate dinner with my parents and had the episode playing in the living room where everyone could hear it. Nobody got the joke but me :( lol

Individuals with AS experience difficulties in basic elements of social interaction, which may include a failure to develop friendships or to seek shared enjoyments or achievements with others (for example, showing others objects of interest), a lack of social or emotional reciprocity (social "games" give-and-take mechanic), and impaired nonverbal behaviors in areas such as eye contact, facial expression, posture, and gesture.

Seems to me that Will presents some of these symptoms.

They show these symptoms due to the inability to empathize (which is how we develop most of our social cues, cognitively). So much of human behavior is learned through imitating as a child. Hell, if Will is "purely empathetic," he should be better at these things than others.

Fair enough. :)

My daughter is nothing like Will, she is .. Well.. Angelically stupid, inadvertently rude and easily distracted. If anything, Will reminds me more of my bipolar friend who doesn't hold up well under stress.

I get the feeling i'm really going to dislike those 3 crime scene investigators (the Asian ***** and the other 2.... " sarcastic " guys or whatever the **** )

the Asian chick's smug ass " you unstable ? " comment made me so mad. like who the **** says that to someone they just met ? that's like saying " so I heard you got a small dick :cwink: " or something. Asian women on crime shows piss me off. between her and that IA chick that kept ****ing with deb in season 3 of dexter.... just no. idc how racist that sounds.

as for the other 2 guys.... they just don't seem that funny. idunno.

I seem to be the only one who doesn't really find Mikkelsen all that obviously creepy.

He acts relatively "normal", to me. I dunno, I don't get the "obviously a monster" vibe. Agree to disagree, I guess.

Hopkins is a lot more "wink wink nudge nudge" overtly creepy (not to mention hammy) in the prologue of Red Dragon where he's hosting a dinner party in high society and isn't known to be a killer yet, than Mikkelsen was in the pilot episode, to me.

I mean, Mikkelsen has moments, like when he leans forward and tells the patient the line about how he'll know when the lion is in the room, and the way he (probably) feeds Graham the girl's lungs, but he plays that breakfast scene more subtle and low-key than Hopkins was in the Red Dragon prologue where the symphony board is obliviously chowing down on the missing flutist and someone asks Hannibal what the meat is and he says ever so very winkingly "If I tell you...I'm afraid you won't even try it". Hopkins almost literally gives this giant wink at the camera.

I love Hopkins as Hannibal, don't get me wrong, but he was enormously campy and way more over-the-top than Mikkelsen so far, including in the Red Dragon prologue where he's in the same "mode" as Hannibal is on this show...the respected psychiatrist who hob knobs with high society and isn't known as a killer yet.
this.

I kind of felt like those three were from the cast of another crime series. Like a CSI or NCIS team had accidentally slipped into a more intelligent show. Every other character seemed appropriately serious and tactful, while the trio seemed like they were just in for a few good laughs. Hopefully they're not in it very much, or the writers turn their characters around completely. Or Hannibal eats them all, that'd be fine too.

I agree, they seemed way too stereotypical, and Beverly's smugness is really annoying.

until you mentioned it, I had forgotten about that smug, condescending Asian *****, but yeah, I wish someone would *****slap that ****... :cmad:

or better yet, have it end up having Hannibal eat her...

I did not like Beverley Katz's character either, but it kind of makes sense when you look at the three forensic investigators. They've worked as a close group for a long time (presumably) and seen a lot of dead bodies. As a tightly-knit group, they likely developed a very twisted, insensitive rapport with each other as a coping mechanism, and that would rub an outsider, especially an outsider's outsider like Will, the wrong way.

They are annoying, but actually quite realistic in terms of human behaviour.

I imagine that over the course of this season, they will see something so shocking to even their dulled senses that it changes them forever ...

It appears dr. lecter should possibly try Chinese for dinner pretty soon. :cwink:

Lol, but remember, Beverley Katz is part of the investigative team in Red Dragon (the novel and both movies) so that is unlikely to happen.

I realize that now.

If the character ends up being truly insufferable (I will give her another chance) the best we can hope for is that she just gets a new job with another agency or something, and comes back to the team years later for the Tooth Fairy case as a special favour to Crawford.

dancy's graham actually reminds me a lot of a friend of mine I've known since 3rd grade ( both share symptoms of Asperger's , similar mannerisms, personality, etc. )

That depends on how closely they stick to canon.

I mean, this is set in present day while Red Dragon was in the '80s, and they made Dr. Bloom and Freddy Lounds women, so I'm not sure if we can say 100% that Beverly is safe.

Yea I get that, they have gallows humor as a defense mechanism as their way of coping what they see every day, I think it's just Beverly being overly smug and the other actors being not the greatest, to be honest.

yep. pretty much.
