As soon as I saw that Bautista got the role I know that a lot of people would be pissed, but I'm not. Neither he nor Momoa are great actors, so to me neither of them was a great choice. Having said that, I do trust Marvel's judgment since they've nailed almost every other role thus far.* If Bautista is their choice I'm sure they have reasons for that.

* The one exception is Cobie Smulders. She looks like Maria Hill but she can't act worth a damn.

I agree cobie is the one casting I have disliked the most. Her line delivery was horrendous, mainly due to her accent.

Just watched Man With The Iron Fists last night, Bautista was fairly good in that. He didn't have a huge part but, he did well. I'm willing to give him a chance.

I'm alos fine with the choice, I've never seen Batista in anything other than WWE, but I've heard good things about his performances in movies.

Am I the only person who watches a movie and doesn't notice how people's 'acting' skills are and how they deliver lines? I've watched Avengers like 15 times and never looked at Maria Hill like "wow she's bad" or any other movie I can think of for that matter haha

Yeah, my excitement for this has dropped quite a bit.

As a general blanket response, I see a lot of users saying "Well, it's not exactly like Guardians of the Galaxy is sacred"...I will be saying the exact same thing when you all get Shad Gaspard as Black Panther or Kaitlyn as Ms. Marvel.:cmad:

Watch the deleted scenes....scurry.

You think they'll pull a silver surfer and just have him do mo cap for Drax?

>Cobie Smulders
>Can't act

Riiiiiight.

Smulders would be perfect for Groot because she acts like a plank of wood. Most of her scenes in TA were deleted for a reason. Before the film came out they touted Hill's scenes with Fury, but that confrontation fell flat on Smulders' inability to portray any intensity at all. Her deleted scenes are so painful to watch that it's clear they were cut because of her performance, no matter what Whedon said to cover for her.

Whedon wanted Smulders to play Wonder Woman -- what a disaster that would have been.

But she's so cute (and so minor) that it didn't bother me. I do feel like she needs to step it up in the next Marvel movies if her role expands.

The only deleted scene I've seen with her was the alternate opening where she's recapping the event to the WSC. I didn't take that scene as emotionless acting skills, I took it more as it was a somber recap of the terrible things she's seen over the course of the last days. So esentially as a character she was drained and almost super stern in the way she reported things to them.

haha guess I'm a glass half full guy, in all the episodes of HIMYM I've watched... which is all of them, I've never been like wow she's bad, I generally just dislike her character from time to time within the context of the show, but not because she's doing a bad job playing her.

I guess Drax in this series is a bit of a brute type character, more of a Vin Diesel in Pitch Black type character than a The Bride in Kill Bill type character.

I mean we're probably not asked to follow him on a journey. We're probably meant to see him as a little antagonistic to the hero but ultimately useful in a battle.

I don't know absolutely everything about Drax, but you think they'll actually go with the whole soul transfer aspect of the character?

Interesting from Mr Beaks @ AICN

Bautista joins Chris Pratt in the Marvel Phase Two film, which will further develop the cosmic goings on introduced in THE AVENGERS. If Marvel takes a traditional approach to the Thanos storyline, Drax will play an important role in THE AVENGERS 2, which would explain why they took their time casting this role. Many actors were in the running, but they all - including Jason Momoa - signed the same standard deal before auditioning. There were no negotiations and no lowball offers. Just screen tests. Ultimately, Momoa and the others lost the role to Bautista fair and square.

No matter who says what, I think that Jason Momoa was a far better choice than Batista.

pretty interesting @SUperSaint hopefully that eases some peoples worries. I only know Mamoa from GoT which he doesn't do a very vocal role to say the least lol, and from what I've seen some of the others post here his other roles weren't much to shake a stick at, as with Bautista's short acting credits I assume either would post a similar job so it came down to the personal screenings so if Bautista impressed them I'm okay with the signing.

The two castings I'm most curious about are RR and Thanos but anyone who is cast won't make or break this movie for me though. I'm going into this film with the most open mind since 1.) we essentially haven't seen anything like this before and 2.) I know really nothing about the GotG lore.

Agreed.

At this point Batista can only surprise me. There's no doubt he's got the physical tools, but it's kind've like how when Ray Park was linked to Iron Fist - Having the physical tools isn't enough. (unless you play a silent ninja).

So, Bautista will be Drax after all. I guess I have no other choice but to trust Marvel on this one.

While I do feel that Marvel were quite narrow in their search for an actor for Drax, I'm sure that Marvel put Batista through the ringer enough times to know that they had the right man.

If sure that if Momoa impressed them enough, they would have found a compromise with him.
