Fantasy Dungeons & dragons movie discussion

I hope they dont go the jumanji route with this. I dont want a movie about middle aged chrus pine getting pulled into one of his old tabletop games.

It has big shoes to fill after the 2000 film. Big shoes. I don't see much point in doing it again when you have scenes like this.

:lmao: I'm crying at work I'm laughing so hard. Thank you. I needed a good laugh.

Yeeeeeah, I kind of have a feeling that's the route they're going to do.

This will finally bring together the basement dwelling, tabletop gamers and the thirsty teen smut novel fans.

God I hope not. There’s so much potential to make an epic fantasy film here. I hope they aren’t thinking, “Yeah but it’s based on a board game so let’s make it ABOUT a magical board game that sucks people into it.” That was what the old cartoon was, and while I enjoyed it when I was five years old, I don’t think anyone wants to see a rehash of that.

Agreed they should go the Warcraft rather than Jumanji route. Ignore that your source material is a game, just fully immerse the audience in the fictional world.

Yeah I mean, Clue was based on a board game but the movie wasn’t actually about a board game.

Damn it, now I’m really worried this is going to suck worse than the Jeremy Irons/D-List Wayans Brother/Guy With Blue Lips version! Arrrrghhhh!!!

You know, I really want this movie to be great but I wonder why D&D so far has gotten the “all new, original story” treatment. There are a host of popular books out there that take place in the D&D world that could potentially make great movies. If movie studios will give fantasy crap like Eragon a chance and other stories with less name recognition, it makes me wonder why Dragonlance or Drizzt don’t get a shot. I guess I understand the reluctance to call a movie “Dungeons & Dragons,” but base it on Dragons of Autumn Twilight or the Dark Elf Trilogy but maybe there’s a way to work around that by giving the movie a subtitle that’s the title of the book.

I remember there being a rumor about a Dragonlance movie and Joe M. Supposedly wrote a script but I doubt that’s going anywhere. Would love to see it though.

Paramount have leased Titanic Studios in Belfast (studio where Game of Thrones was filmed) and filming to commence "early this year".

They're trying to cash in on the roleplaying game aspect of it and not the stories with actual narratives I assume.

Yeah, I get that; I guess I just feel like these studios are doing themselves a disservice by avoiding what has been proven to work (at least as a book) and are instead trying to start from scratch. But simply calling a movie “Dungeons & Dragons” allows you to cash in on the RPG name recognition; you could still base it on one of these beloved stories.

I wonder if they are going for one of.the campaing stories ir they will make an adaptation of their own within the dnd universe.

Pro tip, guys. When you say “go the Warcraft route” it doesn’t help your cause. That movie was a critical bomb and a financial disappointment. I don’t want D&D Jumanji either but if we’re using movies that failed as examples of a D&D movie’s potential (especially when the movie we DON’T want it to emulate was a big hit), I feel like we’re shooting ourselves in the foot.

Warcraft's failure and Jumanji's success didn't hinge on the fact one chose to envelop its story inside a game and the other decided to hide any gaming associations. There are a myriad of reasons why Warcraft disappointed at the box office and Jumanji was a success.
Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu both adopted similar approaches to highlighting video game origins as Warcraft and both were ultimately successful.

I know that, I’m just saying that if we want to point to something as an example of why adapting a game’s story can work (as opposed to the old “normal people get sucked into a game” concept) then use an example that isn’t garbage. Actually, Clue would be a better example to cite than Warcraft, because it’s based on a board game, it adapts the (very loose) story of the game and it’s actually good.
