E3 2010: Sony Edition

I don't understand why people keep saying that. The image effect is far greater than something like upping the resolution from standard definition to high defination and it can be switched on or off. it's an added bonus for people who want it, what's to complain about?

I dont get all the hate for the 3D. Its not like its being forced anyone. Until they start making some games 3D only, I dont have a problem for it. Im glad they are pushing to have many games with it now, bc it gives developers opuurtunites to perfect it and create interesting ways to implement it. Its still early in its cycle but eventually 3D will be another feature with TVs thats standard. By the time I get one (which wont be any time soon), there will at least be a healthy library of titles to check out. I dont see anything bad or wrong with them doing this

I loved the conference and everything they showed and the surprises were shocking in some respects (Gabe):up: but welcome,:D:up: I can't wait to hear more as all the details start coming out!!!:awesome::up: IMO Sony won hands down with Nintendo HOT on their heels and MS, well that one speaks for itself, great stuff so far!!!:awesome::up:

So, "Heroes On The Move" and "Twisted Metal" weren't big enough surprises?

Tough crowd.:whatever:

Gabe is the guy who was talking smack about the PS3 a few years back right?

He did more than that. He was downright brutal about the system. Here are 2 quotes he made in 2007. The first one only 3 months after the system came out

""The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a "do over". Just say, "This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it". The happy story is the Wii. I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, Nintendo Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy. I really like everything that Nintendo is doing."

"[PS3 is] a waste of everybody f****n time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created. I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."

Sony, I am disappoint. Their conference wasn't bad or anything (certainly not as bad as their 2006 conference), but it was very "meh", especially coming off of Nintendo's great showing. Plus they failed to even mention my most anticipated game of the moment, The Last Guardian. It is playable on the show floor, and I'm sure there will be some coverage of that, but it was the only playable game at Sony's booth that was not mentioned at all during the conference. WTF Sony? That's a highly anticipated title.

yea, I mean I;m not into this 3d and motion controller thing myself, but it's just an option, don't understand all the hate as long as sony keeps makin good games for the ps3 I'll be happy

Though Nintendo did have some great exciting things that I will be buying day one. I really was not that impressed. It all comes down to Nintendo acting like Apple, every five freaking minutes there is a new hand held on the market, a new type of DS. I do tire of it. And I'm not a hand held guy anymore just don't see much use for it as I get older.

Sony had amazing things. I'm glad Move is not just purely Wii 2.0. I'm glad they are implementing it into hardcore games, and making it an option. Something I think Wii should have done long ago.

Yea sucked The Last Guardian was not there, but there was tons of others. Come on, Twisted Metal is classic beyond belief, and its been 10 years almost since the last one. That and we had GT5 which looks also amazing. Socerer or what ever actually surprised me on how good it looked. Killzone 3, and then a lot of good multiplats and so forth. Sly collection Infamous 2.

I"m sure at TGS we will see stuff on the Last Guardian. Sony showed me they are just getting warmed up and that excited me, especially how much farther they will be able to go then Nintendo.

Though I love Nintendo, and SMG2 is one of the best games out there. I think their tech is going to limit them. But I loved their stuff too, Donkey Kong+ Retro Studios=Me get. Zelda=Awesome.

So I think Sony had the best, but Nintendo rocked the house as well. But MS failed I think on almost every level.

i honestly think that they should have left out PGA and the whole Coke thing and focused more on gaming i mean i think i almost fell aslep when the guy was up there talking about golf which i think is and extremely boring sport and i liked what this one guy said about how the coke thing is something you talk about in a board meeting not in front of gamers

So, why is he developing for the PS3 after all? Has the mighty dollar spoken or did he just realize what an ass he has been these past couple years?

The PlayStation Move controller is more an evolution of the Wiimote than something entirely ground-breaking in its own right but that's no reason not to be impressed. I can't wait to play it.

Here were the Pros
+Kevin Butler Slamming Kinect in Videos/Kevin Butler Appearing On Stage
+Infamous 2 Trailer
+Killzone 3 Gameplay
+Twisted Metal
+Portal 2
+Move Price
Negatives
-Too Much Informing they were telling us stuff we already knew
-No First Party Exclusive Demos
-Didn't like the New PSP marketing
-Sorcery
-Too Much Move
-No Resistance 3 Reveal or anything on Resistance
-No Agent Footage or anything
-Not enough big surprises

How is the Move price a positive? Initial price is $100 if you don't have an eye toy yet, then another $30 for the nunchuk portion, but you at achery, the person has two main Move components, so that's another $50. You're at $180 for one full controller. After that for the full thing it looks like you'll need to shell out $100-$130 for each additional full controller package, two main components and maybe a nunchuck. I thought Sony had a strong showing, but also is still asking too much for their product(s).

Yeah, I might get one. I have a PS Eye already, so I have a head start I guess. Lol.

Has the mighty dollar spoken

Probably because Microsoft was forcing them to charge for there content and not giving them the ability to frequently update there games as much as they would like. Sony letting them be third party probably means the users wont pay a penny for additional content with on the fly updates not having to be jump through hoops in order to be applied. That's what he seemed to be talking about when he was refereeing to it as the most open console.

Best moments from the conference:

The inital price without a PS Eye is $50. The add on Navigator is $30, for a total of $80. Throw in the PS Eye and thats an additinoal $40, for a complete package of $120. Each additional full controller package will be $80. Where are you getting your inflated numbers from?

Edited to add: The Navigation is completely optional. No game requires it. You can use the current DS3 in its place. If you notice, the Navigation was constructed to look like the left side of the DS3. You can save $30 off the Move price by not getting it.

he also probably realizes how much of an idiot he came across as. One of his main arguments against the system was that it was too complicated to develop for. While it is true that the PS3 is a more complex piece of hardware, this statement made him look silly considering the amazing stuff, Criterion, Infinity Ward and other multiplatform developers were doing. It did nothing but point to the weakness in his own talents considering he was admitting he couldnt figure out how to work with it. The other thing was that he blasted the PS3 bc he didnt feel making games on the PS3 was worth the investment bc the system wasnt a big seller. While also true, he jumped the gun considering the system had only been out for a few months and got alot of heat at that time. Im sure watching Activision and EA make loads of money off the system in the past couple of years has definetly made him want to change his views. If he were smart, he wouldnt have been so anti-PS3 in the beginning. Would have made more sense to try and get an exclusviity deal with MS, considering they love to seek those out

These are completely different engines.
The source engine wasn't built with the Playstation 3 in mind. It wasn't built with the xbox360 in mind either, but due to system, it is far easier from A to B. This is evident in other multiplat games such as Fallout 3. It was EA who put The Orange Box on the Playstation 3, not Valve. Even though he has mentioned he thinks it will be the best console version, this is because of steam integration. Even though they have got a team working on the Playstation 3 version than have EA handle it, it may still end up being technically better on the Xbox360 version regardless, after all, the source engine managed to backtrack to run on the original Xbox fairly decently.

Valve have made no exclusivity deal what so ever, it was a matter of quality, Doug Lambardi is seen in a video interview getting specifically stating the metacritic score for the Playstation 3 was "unacceptable" in comparison to the "96/96". They could quite easily have banged out lesser ports for all games afterwords including Portal 2, most companies do bang an IP on every available platform regardless of gaps in quality i.e. the wii.

Obviously they have different engines, but thats of no fault of Sony or the PS3. It was utterly ridiculous for him to go on so many rampages about it. Ive never seen a developer attack a console the way Gabe bashed the PS3. To say the system is a disaster and that owners should go and demand a refund on it bc you cant easily adapt your game to it. Come on now. It was over the top and uncalled for.

I know they dont have any exclusvity deal. I said they should have probably seeked one out

Ah sorry.
I don't get what you mean, care to explain?
He had no intentions of making his games for the PS3 anyway, so he might as well have gone to MS and tried to get to sign an excluvity deal to bring Valve games to the 360. MS probably would have offered them millions to do so and it would have been another thing to hold against the PS3 as they did with many other games bac in 2007. But with him publicaly blasting the PS3 numerous times, everyone knew where they stood on this front.

Valve is primarily a pc compan. If there games did because "microsoft exclusive" that probably wouldn't just include Xbox360, it would also mean a "Games For Windows live" title or not on the pc at all. There games are also on the MAC now. Even though the MAC has really, very little sales, it appears this doesn't stop Microsoft exclusivity attitude, even with little indie games on Xboxlive.

http://gamer.blorge.com/2010/04/11/microsoft-doesnt-want-games-unless-its-xbox-live-exclusive/

I think this Playstation 3 thing is primarily concerning content than anything else. Valve attempted to negotiate with them to get all the Team Fotress 2 content on Xboxlive for free, in the end they had to settle for a expansion pack type deal with accumulated content, the content for Left4dead 1/2 has much far less and much slow in comparison. With Sony allowing them to use steamworks there presumably wont be the barrier Microsoft had. I'm pretty sure there is also a validation X amount of days thing for patches with Microsoft as well.

Killzone, Sly (and Ratchet), Sorcerer, and of course Portal 2 are all very intriguing, but the rest I just wasn't feeling. And although I know more on The Last Guardian will be at Tokyo Game Show, I was still bummed that it wasn't mentioned since that was really my only request from Sony this year. Whatever else they showed I would have been content if they gave a new trailer or release date or something.

When I say exclusive, like most other games this gen, I mean console exlcuisve. The PC and Mac are two different territories that dont directly affect the current gen console systems

I took that into account when you explained. It seems in order to make the "exclusive" deal it needs to totally be on the Xbox360 or be under the "Games For Windows" brand. This isn't the case with Left4dead or Leftdead 2 as Valve wouldn't allow it to be purely Xbox360 console exclusive nor would they allow "Games For Windows" with such features as "Games For Windows Live" as they have there own service.
