Sci-Fi Edge of Tomorrow - Part 1

^ I share your thoughts on the Rita character, and to go a step further, apply them to the movie as a whole.

It was okay. An entertaining couple of hours. Other than that? Eh...

See. Right there. That last half of your second sentence... "Flawless" is what I'm talking about. She was okay. Good even. "Flawless" indicates that somehow this actress and the performance she gave was some kind of through the roof powerhouse that had everyone talking about it and garnered her an Oscar nomination or the like. Sorry... In the actual world I just don't see it. To me, it's a grand overstatement. Replace her and it doesn't make any more or any less.

I don't think it's an grand overstatement in the least. It's about what I saw in the character. Blunt sold me every moment of Rita the way I thought it should be done, the more agressive and the more subtle with precision. There is nothing that I would change in it, therefore I'd see not reason not to call it flawless. Doesn't it mean she should win a Oscar? No, because it's irrelevant in my view, I don't feel I can judge that. What actress should win awards and all that, all I can say is what I like. And I liked Blunt as Rita. A LOT.

Pacific Rim for example, I'd say it's a flaweless film. From beginning to end I had a huge smile in my face. And there are a few other films and performances that I'd rate that too.

But this is really a waste of time, isn't it? All this just to justify the use of a word... if you have any interesting discussion about the character and Blunt's performance I'd be happy to talk about them.

Oh, and SofN please, make your next attempt more subtle. I've never said Gadot was a shoe in to give us a great WW. I've mostly said that she should be given a chance and that what ever she has appeared in during her film career, in no way qualifies or DISqualifies her to play Diana. Please don't deny that's what you were getting at with talk of people supporting actresses they've never seen in parts. It would insult both of our intelligence's to do so.

You're right. That's why I delete that part of the most even before you posted. Not really worth anything.

Only half joking...

Your willingness to publicly admit that you thought PAC RIM was "flawless" says it all better than any rebuttal.

More seriously... Please, you are better than playing the pedantic card. I know what you meant by using the word FLAWLESS, and so did everybody else out in television land, and don't try to sell me that it was some ultra precise, Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition. C'mon son. I'm not Spock and you ain't Data.

Another enjoyable Cruise sci-fi/action vehicle. It only gets rubbish right before the final attack , instead of the usual 50-60 mark.

The film lacks direction. The good mostly comes from the concept and its development. Another director could have made something much more relevant , and exquisite.

Still...good fun.

I have to agree with Krypton Inc, the way Rita was talked up I thought she'd be this amazing character. I'm a fan of Blunt and I liked her in the role but I don't think it's going to become some signature all time great performance for her or anything.

In general I just think the film is way, way overrated by critics and fans because it's not a Superhero comicbook movie. It's a solid film and very likable but it's not some all time great classic to me.

I don't think critics and fans (other than SoN) talked it up as an all time great classic, Spidey. It's just a good, fun time at the movies. I like Blunt in the role and thought she brought a great level gravitas while also bringing a sense of innocence and humanity to the character.

Oh, and Pacific Rim isn't flawless. Yes, I know, opinions, but while I've never been a fan of calling a movie perfect or flawless, I know if I did Pacific Rim is nowhere near one.

I very much liked EOT. It hums on all cylinders from start to finish almost with entertaining and engaging performances all around, and I suppose it found a way to translate the video game tone an aesthetic to film where so many direct adaptations of games failed. It's set up and the flow of the story, the way they handled it's plot are what really stick out though. Other wise there's LOTS we've seen before including Blunt's kick ass, damaged, no nonsense warrior woman (whom did elicit lots of sympathy and interest from me. Then again I suspect Theron would have as well). But that's ok cuz it's such a solidly built film. Which is part of why I felt that Blunt, fine as she is in her part, is neither the end all of the film or irreplaceable. She's a fine actress, but, sorry, in THIS role, I didn't see what the hype (and THE HYPE) is all about.

I'm not saying that she was flawless or irreplaceable either. I think Blunt did well in the role and was awesome in it. As much as I adore Charlize Theron, I don't think she would have displayed vulnerability nearly as well. Still, there are other actresses that would do well in the role, but I must give kudos to blunt for her doing well in the role.

I also really liked Edge of Tomorrow and wish it did get more attention in theaters, but it's most likely going to get more attention when it eventually hits Netflix.

I would bet it gets a huge reception once more people discover it.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Me saying I thought Pacific Rim flawless somehow invalidates what I'm saying?

Let me put this way: I had a huge smille of my face everytime I saw Rita on screen. It has to do with the quality of the film, the writing of the character and Emily Blunt acting. The thing is: I wouldn't change anything, so in my view it was flawless.

Then, for you that adjective might have a different meaning than it has for me. I don't want to discuss the meaning of a word. If you want you can forget it and understand what I meant is, again, that I had a huge smile at my face everytime I saw Rita on screen. Just like I had with Pacific Rim, of Elite Squad 2 and Capitão Nascimento.

And I have to say, you trying to imply you know better than myself what I meant is extremely arrogant and presumptuous. Again, I'm more than willing to talk about the character, not so much this worthless "i know what you meant more than you do" talk.

Is colloquial English your first language SoN? Not trying to start something, because if it is not, then lots of my interaction with you these past months makes a hell of a lot of sense. When someone uses a word like "flawless" it denotes a lot, beyond it's actual definition. Sorry if vulgarian use of language is a pet peeve of yours but... yeah, when someone states that I don't think most people think of some precise, from the dictionary usage, at least those that speak American English fluently. You used it and it felt like it implied more than, say, what one would technically mean when appraising a diamond. If you aren't a native speaker and writer of English, American style then how you've come across around here makes sense.

Oh, and in quoting me, notice how you left off the part where I said I was partly joking? SoN, PAC RIM doesn't have the best of reputations around here, and trust me, I was one pulling for that film big time to be great. So yeah, holding that up as a standard of your taste is going to elicit some snickering. So what? Don't make like you are some Platonic ideal poster on an internet forum that's never done the exact same thing. We all do.

All I want to say is that I loved Emily Blunt as Rita in Edge of Tomorrow, that's all. And I also loved Pacific Rim.

She played great role. I liked her character. Exactly, she was badass but elegant, threatening but not a jerk. And Cruise was fantastic, I liked antsman41's comment. Cruise going from 'non Cruise' to very Cruisey. Something different from his usual roles which get movie overall better feel.

I really want sequel and both of them coming back alongside director.

Bill Pullman is the one who should be getting all the praise!

Have it been discussed how awesome the aliens are in this film? And by awesome I mean scary and deadly as ****. It's like the guys that designed the mimics looked at a scorpion and said: "the body and the legs are not very threatening, let's take them out and put more claws and tails... and let's not forget ranged attacks. They must have the ability to shoot fiery balls of death". Just look at the part when a single one slaughter the entire J Squad. They didn't stood a chance. Mimics are strong, ridiculously fast, resourceful and it doesn't hurt they look very cool. Certainly a killing machine worth of a super advanced race of conquering aliens.

The interesting thing about it is that they feel like a massive, virtually impossible to defeat threat. And that's without going into the 'reset the day' thing. This is the way it should be. An alien threat (or any global threat in films) should feel impossible to defeat. In a film with the mechanics of Edge of Tomorrow it couldn't be any different, otherwise it would feel like they will conquer the planet just becasue the film says so. Personally I feel like that with a lot of films. What you guys think?

^They were cool, but Doug Liman said during production of the movie he is not really interested in aliens, and it showed, they certainly were not a focal point. But not delving into them helped keep them a mystery as well which always makes things more interesting.

I can understand that. We really don't know anything about the mimics by the movie end. Where they came from, their motives, anything. They're just this overwhelming force of killing machines. And It worked really well.

I thought the film was good. I enjoyed this more than oblivion. It was nice seeing cruise play a slim ball trying to save his own skin before slipping into the usual action hero routine.

Cool seeing Franz drameh from attack the block battling aliens again. I also noticed Lara pulver from BBC Sherlock standing next to cruise at the end.

I liked the movie a lot. Though out of the two Groundhogs, I think 'Source Code' is better on a more emotional level.

I agree with that. Both movies were are fantastic, though.

I liked this movie.

I could see this moving having been made in the early 90s, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, spouting one-liners and severing limbs of those alien creatures left and right. That would have been a great movie, actually, even better than this one. (alone "I'll be back". LOL. How fitting)
