876m WW, 395m domestically. Will pass 900m WW, 400m domestic this week.

Wow. 47 mill it's 3rd weekend, barely losing to the boss baby for 2nd place. Crazy.
What the heck happened to GITS?

Scarjo is not a big draw like we all thought. At least Marvel has an excuse for not doing a Black Widow solo. I think someone like Angelina Jolie would cause GITS to open above 35-40 mil.

Jolie's a bigger draw than Scarlett? No way. Not in these days. Then again I don't pay attention of BO discussions.

Seemed to me like a "meh" movie is getting a "meh" reception.

From what i've read, it's not that good.
Besides, i think people are starting to be sick with Scarlett Johansson, she is becoming the "to go girl" for action movies, she is becoming overexposed in those kind of flicks.

Besides, it was a stupid casting since that, for the average joe, it's a similar role as "Lucy".

Nah. Believe me, Ms Jolie is a bigger draw. The MCU has increased Scarjo's profile but that's about it.

Maybe 10 years ago? Now, no. And it's weak tea to say that Marvel shouldn't do a Black Widow movie because of GitS. After all, Lucy has opened bigger than any solo attempts by Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth. Passengers also bombed for Pratt. :o

The reason GitS bombed is it wasn't very good, and the trailers didn't hide that fact. Also, the negative buzz on the internet of whitewashing gave it a stain in perception a bit I think, and then RottenTomatoes cemented it. I thought Power Rangers would be the flop and GiTS would be the modest disappointment between the two. GitS at least had very strong visuals and a fairly wondrous sci-fi world being built (Blade Runner ripoff though, it may be). Power Rangers was an ugly movie. But I underestimated '90s nostalgia there.

But yeah, Beauty and the Beast has done amazingly, and I will not be shocked if it is number one again next weekend.

Most actors aren't draws solely by themselves. That day is over for the most part unless maybe you're Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt.

Most people didn't go see Beauty and the Beast because of Emma Watson.

pffttt.......DarthSkywalker did. :o :oldrazz:

I can't stress enough how awesome B&TB was for me. My wife loved it as well.
I won't be surprised at all if it does over 500 mill in the states and around 1.2 bill ww. It's drops from weekend to weekend are small.

I think that was the combination of brand and actor that made the appeal potent. Already they are tapping into nostalgia (particularly for millennials) with remaking a Disney Renaissance classic. Now throw in grown up Hermione, and the thing is a nostalgia bomb.

But yes, I do not actually think Watson is a particularly good actress. So I will be curious to see if this gives her non branded projects any sort of bounce, starting with The Circle. It will be interesting to see.

Finally saw this, thought it was pretty good. The animated film is certainly better, but this was a quality adaptation that had some nice additions. Watson was the weak link by far though, imo.

Also, I liked the big dance scene in Cinderella better. This one depended too much on CGI to provide the "magic" and was ultimately kind of lackluster to me.

EDIT: And I would really like to hear the unaltered version of Stevens' performance of "Evermore." Love that song, and he clearly sang it well, but I just hate that digital pitching on his voice.

This isn't official/is a fan edit but someone on youtube has played around with the song and created what they feel is close to an unaltered version:

I think that user might have pitched him up a tad too much though. The thing is, that while I know that they did add effects to his voice to help give it the beastly growl and what not, I'm not sure how much of the lower pitch of his voice was actually digital. Dan talked in one of his interviews for the movie how, when deciding how Beast would sound, he had a pair of false fangs to wear and figuring that a vain prince suddenly faced with these hideous fangs would talk out of the front of his mouth more (not moving his lips a lot) and even just that kind of ended up in his voice going to a lower deeper pitched place.

Just my take on it.

^This.

I really don't think actors are "the" draw for audiences anymore, overall. Nowadays it's brand recognition.

I mostly agree. I think that Watson did add value to this project (seeing Hermione as Belle), whereas Lily James (who was wonderful) did not create additional interest for Cinderella.

The right actor in the right role matters. Like Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones or RDJ as Iron Man. This is Hermione as Belle. The parallels are obvious, especially when you consider Watson herself.

I wish the costumer who did BatB had done the Into the Woods movie. I was pretty disappointed in those costumes, they were so blah. The BatB costumes are very bright and detailed, they look very much like you'd expect in a fairy tale.

Agreed. All the looks were great ,especially for Belle imo. The ballgown ended up looking a lot better then the first few images showed. I really liked Belle's "blue dress". Probably my favorite.

One thing I noticed was that the designer used a TON of floral prints. Almost every dress had flowers on it somewhere.

But people are reacting to the casting like "Oh, it's Hermoine from Harry Potter as Belle from Beauty & The Beast" instead of "Oh, it's Emma Watson in a new movie." Big difference, if you ask me. The actors themselves aren't the main draw for general audiences anymore.

I completely agree that the right actor in the right role is HUGE. However, I think audiences have gravitated to those actors AS their characters rather than the actors themselves ...
