But people are reacting to the casting like "Oh, it's Hermoine from Harry Potter as Belle from Beauty & The Beast" instead of "Oh, it's Emma Watson in a new movie." Big difference, if you ask me. The actors themselves aren't the main draw for general audiences anymore.
I completely agree that the right actor in the right role is HUGE. However, I think audiences have gravitated to those actors AS their characters rather than the actors themselves ...
I think that user might have pitched him up a tad too much though. The thing is, that while I know that they did add effects to his voice to help give it the beastly growl and what not, I'm not sure how much of the lower pitch of his voice was actually digital. Dan talked in one of his interviews for the movie how, when deciding how Beast would sound, he had a pair of false fangs to wear and figuring that a vain prince suddenly faced with these hideous fangs would talk out of the front of his mouth more (not moving his lips a lot) and even just that kind of ended up in his voice going to a lower deeper pitched place.
Thanks, I agree the fan who made it seemed to pitch him up a bit too far. As for how "natural" the beast's voice is, it seems pretty clear to me that it's not. Here's what the sound editor/designer had to say about it:
Theres a lot of Dan Stevens in the Beast, confirmed the films supervising sound editor and designer Warren Shaw. We did as much as we could with his work...while its a classic Hollywood trick to take a voice and lower the pitch to make it sound more like a monster, we couldnt just do that because the Beast sings and we had to keep everything in key. So basically we played with a lot of different processing elements and software, between the music department and myself, where the sound would also be in key with the music.
Sounds to me like, while they didn't do the standard pitch drop, there was a lot of digital work that went into it, and you can hear that in the recording, imo. I'd just like to hear the untouched version, because he sang it wonderfully, fake fangs and all.
BatB made 9.7M on Tuesday (2.9M DOM and 6.8M OS) for total 993.2M WW. That means it should cross 1 billion at the end today, or at the latest by Thursday afternoon before F8 preview.
Btw I think this is the first time ever that I see daily OS BO reported even during weekdays, I think other bigger blockbusters only have total OS BO reported every (Thursday and) Sunday.
BatB made 13.6M domestic and 19.3M overseas this weekend for 1.043B worldwide total. I think 30M more domestic (it'll probably make more though), 35M more OS-Japan and 50M in Japan for about 1.16B worldwide (over #11 WW Minions' 1.1594B) is a good aim.

There is no reason to think it won't make it to 500m domestically. It has been doing better then Jungle Book every week so far, and that had another 53m in the tank at this point.
Saw it last night, oh my gosh it was so beautiful. I never saw the Broadway production so it was my first time seeing all the backstory stuff. Loved it.
I'm surprised they didn't put more of a feminist tilt on it though, I thought they would have a scene where the beast says "kidnapping you and yelling at you and harassing your dad was definitely not good".
Can't wait for more. The set design and costuming was incredible!
Finally saw this. My favorite part was when the two guys danced for 1.5 seconds and homophobes around the world collectively soiled themselves and went insane.
I mean, it didn't even involve Luke Evans, Jesus...
This is actually my biggest problem with the film. Both Cogsworth and Lumiere were so unmemorable compared to the animated film. For me it was the biggest letdown.
I actually thought Mrs. Potts was more unmemorable in this compared to her animated counterpart. McGregor's Lumiere and McKellen's Cogsworth were two of my favorite characters in this.
Yes, but here's a question: Name me a hit that RDJ has had outside of Iron Man in recent years? Of course there's Tropic Thunder, but that was almost 10 years ago.
Actors alone are not enough to sell tickets nowadays, in my opinion.

The Sherlock Holmes films. Due Date was also successful. Then again, RDJ isn't really a good example because he's only starred in one movie in the last five years where he didn't play Tony Stark.

That's a fact. While notable actors can garner some interest in a film, these days it is in no way a guarantee that the film will over-perform. Audiences have to be genuinely drawn to the product no matter who's involved.
