I love Emma to bits and I'm sure she'll be fine, but I still think they should have gone with an unknown.

there are some actors/actresses who totally embody a role. You no longer see the actor/actress but the character they are playing.

then, there are some actors/actresses who you look at and just see the actor/actress playing the role.

Emma, for me, falls into the latter camp.

It's hard NOT to compare it to the original when it's copied it in so many areas, right down to some of the jokes.

I agree with the critic that said it's not a remake so much as a reenactment. They seem to want you to constantly be thinking of the cartoon. We'll see if that was a good idea or not.

This is in contrast to the way they handled Cinderella, which used some of the characters but it wasn't a musical and looked very different from the cartoon as far as the costumes and character designs were concerned.

Uh.
6.1 at imdb.
68% at tomatoes.
63 at metacritics.

Honestly I'm confused.
It's remake of a classic that even got nominated for Best Picture.

It was a tall order.

I guess in hindsight, yeah that was a tall order for it to have a similar reception critically I mean. I haven't seen it so I'm not going to pretend that I know whether I'll love it or like it or dislike it.

It has the same problem last year's Ghostbusters did: It's a remake of a classic movie that was perfect in the first place and didn't need one. You want to judge it on its own merits, but it's impossible when you're reminded of the first version at every turn.

In other news, I was poking around YouTube and came across this clip from the Beauty and the Beast Christmas movie that shows how the curse happened in the animated universe:

Super crappy animation aside, it's a pretty different take from the event in the new live action movie...

It sucks that they didn't include the piano obsessed mortician in this movie.

Because his voice is already played with due to the whole "Beast" sound. It's the fact that people are saying that Belle "isn't auto tuned" is what's causing people to speak up about her auto tuning more.

For Emma's sake, Celine Dion's voice has been tweaked too. It seems like whoever produced/mixed this album
Just a note (if this is in regards to me saying "I don't hear it")... I'm not saying she isn't auto-tuned at all. I'm sure she is, I'm sure a lot of the cast is (it's - unfortunately - rare these for absolutely no auto-tuning to happen at all). I'm simply saying that to me it actually being auto-tuned is not noticeable to me. And I still hold to that. In saying that, I'm not saying that I'm right and you're wrong (or vice versa). Not everyone's ears work exactly the same not all of us process sound exactly the same.

My personal opinion is simply that I don't hear obvious auto-tuning with her. I'm fine with how the soundtrack sounds... on ALL the songs. That's my opinion

The bottom line shouldn't be that this movie makes a billion dollars. The bottom line is we get a good quality film. And I'm leaning towards we getting a billion dollar making movie with subpar quality that everyone seems to chew up :whatever:

Well for Disney the bottom line is they make a billion off of it (not counting home media and years of merchandise potential).

The bottom line for us is whether it is a good movie, however. We find that out soon enough.

Actually fun fact, La La Land didn't seem to use auto-tune. That is impressive because Gosling is not a very good singer (Stone is OK), but the refusal to play too much with "perfecting" the voices gave it an authenticity vibe.

However, they were not trying to sing songs already made iconic by real singers like Paige O'Hara. But this circles back to the problem of remaking a classic.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 2012 Les Mis didn't use auto tune either.

was emma trained in musical theater in college? Just curious.
best of luck for the project.

It has next to nothing to do with the fact that they remade a classic.

It has to do with her ability to execute the material, period.

If she's autotuned and this is the result, that's just kind of sad, because the result isn't very impressive.

It is not all that difficult for a good singer with the requisite range to approximate or match what Paige O'Hara did. There are plenty of women in Hollywood and elsewhere who can sing the material far more impressively. There are women who can sing every bit as well as Paige O'Hara, or even Susan Egan, who originated the stage role, and herself exceeded what O'Hara did in many respects.

Perhaps they shouldn't have made this a musical, and gone for more the Cinderella 2015 angle, which got very good critical reviews.

I've listened to the entire soundtrack a few times now and I think she sounds fine. Nothing great, but not bad at all. The person that sticks out like a sore thumb however, is Ewan McGregor and his horrible fake French accent.

He's playing a cartoon candle, I think he can be forgiven a light accent.

Let's talk about how bad everyone else's French accent is. Some of them sound downright British.

I listened to the sound track and I'm even more excited to see this now.

Why should he be forgiven? Why even cast him in the first place. If we're nitpicking, which most of you are, I consider him one of the worst of the cast, his singing included.

One of the reasons I've been indifferent to this film is because it looks like it's trying so hard to remind me of the animated movie, a movie I already own a copy of. Then there's the singing being completely underwhelming and in some cases autotuned. They would have been much better not going down this route and doing something that was a bit more original.

Exactly, you can't really give something a fair evaluation if it's constantly trying to remind you of something else.

Honestly I think if these movies didn't include the musical numbers, I'd be disappointed. As well as other people who have wanted to see these incredible scenes in live-action. Jungle Book and Cinderella more or less got away with it because they're a little older, but I want my 90's Disney Renaissance movies with the musical numbers intact .
