How do you rate Endgame?

I can't really tell how I'm going to feel until I see the movie, but it sounds like they go in directions not a lot were expecting or wanting and that is what is causing these mixed reactions. Honestly, it does sound very similar to what Johnson did with TLJ, although maybe not as extreme. I'll just have to wait to see it for myself to judge, but its going to be an interesting experience nonetheless.
I didn't personally see any of that, then again the issues people had with TLJ kind of went over my head so I'm probably not the best judge. In regards to subverting expectations people are probably just pissed off that their predictions were wrong which is silly. I didn't see any "Rey is nobody" moment anyway.

I'm seeing a lot of reactions online that people were upset the movie didn't do the things they were expecting. But if that happened, wouldn't you be upset that it was predictable? Hard to please people these days, I guess.

Also, this is an unprecedented event in movie history, where the hype of this thing has created thousands and thousands of blogs and youtube videos trying to dissect every clue and every possible plot point. There's no way the movie could ever live up to the one you've created in your head. It's a shame.

Maybe its because I'm not super invested in Star Wars like the majority are, but I actually didn't hate TLJ either, although I can understand why many people did. I don't see this movie getting those kinds of reactions, but its obvious now that it will disappoint some. This is exactly what happens when you spend too much time crafting your own theories or watching those senseless theory videos, although I will admit to enjoying some like Kinda Culty. Also, the hype is so huge for this movie that it's almost impossible for it to live up to everyone's expectations.

Yeah there's a lot of "this isn't the movie I created in my mind months ago, so it sucks" these days. The Last Jedi comparisons are especially worrysome; the Star Wars fandom is so friggin' toxic these days, I don't want that to happen to Marvel too

God I hope not. Those Star Wars fans are toxic as hell, especially the ones who just hate it for the political/agenda reasons.

I was saying this yesterday. Far too many people unfairly criticize a film when it doesn't go the way they wanted it too. I'm sure some of the criticisms are fair but when I see it tonight I'll find out if I agree with some of the negative views around the internet. I have a feeling I won't though. I also can't wait to see if the first few acts are really convoluted as some have said. One of the many things I've noticed with people on the internet over the years is they seemingly have a hard time following films that have a lot going on.

AEG Review
Rating: 8 out of 10

Thought the movie was very good but not great. Even though it's 3 hours long it really didn't felt like it, so it's a testament to how well it was put together. Good action, great character moments, good/decent humor, strong drama...

Pros: The movie is well paced for the most part with things always happening to keep you connected with the story. Strong bits of acting throughout with RDJ as the clear MVP on this department, well executed personal stories from Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Hawkeye... Dramatic weight. Strong CGI elements, namely Hulk which i though was very good, character moments/feats, some of the action was very good... Visually it looked good... The action oscillated a bit but at times it fired on all cylinders and it was great.

Cons: Not all of it works... Not that much a fan of time jumps, some of it felt forced and almost dealt too quickly, the time-travel shenanigans kind of work but can be problematic. Quite a few loose ends and convenient stuff. Low on action for quite a portion of the movie and chaotic at times. Plenty of things could have been executed better namely plot points and character choices.

Man, it's really only this forum I have seen negative/mixed reactions haha, everywhere else it's been praised.

Not sure why people are claiming this is TLJ-like. If anything its pretty much
the same story as Xmen Days of future Past

Wouldn't say its negative, just not as overly hyperbolic as some early critics/bloggers who are immediately calling it the best CBM of all time

Wow. Can't believe I'm logging in after so, so many years and that too just to review this film.

The spoiler-free version of the review is simply this: go see it. It is unmissable. Not just because it is a very good film on its own (though it doesn't by itself reach the heights of the genre's best), but because of what it represents. Ten years of buildup and consistent storytelling that may have sputtered and shaken along the way but never truly broken. It's unbelievable they made it this far, and by the end of the movie, you will feel grateful to have lived through this journey.

Like many have said, the greater your investment in the MCU the more you will enjoy all the crumbs and easter eggs peppered throughout. The term "love letter to fans" is being thrown around for a reason. At this point, these characters don't really require much development or story setup - we know who they are, what their relationships are like. This is not a stand-alone film, and I believe it is absolutely necessary to have watched at least all of the Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man and Dr. Strange films to even get a basic understanding (and appreciation) of what's going on in this film.

Let's face it - we all are watching Endgame not for some grand saga to unfold, we have already been doing that since the first Iron Man; we are watching it to see how it ends. A closure to what is unquestionably the most epic (both in scale and scope) blockbuster franchise ever made. We are watching hoping for catharsis, hoping that the characters (the main leads at least) are done justice. And to my great relief and delight, they are. I believe people who are critiquing the film's faults are overlooking the fact that Avengers Endgame epitomizes the saying of ultimately being something much more than just the sum of its parts. And when it is over, we comic book fans will rejoice at the fact that got to see and experience all of it in our lifetime. In my personal experience, I wouldn't say it is a transformative movie experience that redefines the genre or filmmaking but I am willing to go out on a limb and state that it is the biggest crowd-pleaser I've ever seen in my life. Don't watch this film as a critic. You will be doing both yourself and the film a great disservice. Watch it as a fan, of both comic books and summer blockbusters. Watch it like someone who has accompanied the MCU in its decade long journey. Watch it as just a lover of movies in general, without the cynicism and let yourself be carried away by its escapism. I am not telling you to temper your expectations, I am telling you to go in with the right expectations. And by the end of it, you will get what the filmmakers intended to give you all along - the bittersweet feeling of telling goodbye to an old friend, but with the fulfillment and satisfaction of a life fully lived.

Spoiler discussion later if people are interested.

The single greatest thing about this movie is how different it is compared to Infinity War, which was heavier on action and lighter on character moments, while Endgame felt the exact opposite to me, while still feeling the second half of the same movie! Perfectly balanced indeed.

As I said before I'd rate this somewhere between 9.25 - 9.5 / 10. Wasn't the blast or thrill ride the first Avengers was but as a culmination of the saga for many characters, it's right up there. And the final battle is the best and biggest ever. As expected, lots of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff goes on,
as they split up into teams to try and get the Infinity stones before Thanos at certain points in history where most of them are closest to each other. Before that, Captain Marvel rescues Tony at the last moment and brings the ship to Earth, meaning the post-credits scene in Captain Marvel was a fake out. I would have wanted some more dialogue between Carol and the other at this point and wouldn't have minded 5 minutes for the run time. But no. They go to find Thanos just like the scene shown to Disney share holders. Carol and several other restrain Thanos while Thor chops of his hand. Then Jaime..err.. Thanos tells them he destroyed the stones. They can't undo things, after which Thor chops off his head. Five year time jump, Scott comes back from the Quantum realm because a rat pressed the button... Stark and Thos have "moved on or not but concentrating on other things, Tony on his daughter and Thor on beer. I liked the way Tony got his ass off the couch and how Thor needed his mother to straighten himself out in the end. The time leaps well really well done and I didn't expect to see Robert Redford nor Natalie Portman again. Of course the Hulk ruined the New York 2012 heist ("So many stairs!") because the Tesseract ende up in Lokis' hands and he teleported out, so they had to go 1970 to get the Tesseract and new Pym particles. Tony got to see his dad and Steve saw Peggy. At this point you got the feeling something might happen on that front.

In space seeing Quill dancing without music was funny and how the Nebula of this era managed to intercept the present day Nebula's signals and thought meant Thanos got in on the plan.

Natasha sacrificing herself to get the Soul stone made the theater silent. ;(

The old Nebula brought in Thanos' ship via the portal and **** got real for the final hour..ish but not before Professor Hulk had used the gauntlet to undo the snap. It took them a while to arrive but holy **** was it epic to finally hear "Avengers...assemble! Chills!

The final battle was one the best comic book scenes ever outdoing the moving shot from the first Avengers or the slow-mo shot in AoU. Also one good shot of likely future female Avengers at one point. When things looked they were going to turn in favor of hte good guys, Thanos ordered his ship to fire on the ground. I expected it to happen but when the guns turned to shoot into the clouds, I knew Carol was coming. I even expected her to fly through the ship and I still got chills. Even got her hair to look like in the comics! They still needed to send the stone back in time to their original places so that time would not get fractured, as explained by the Ancient One to Banner. Thanos managed to destroy the can portal before Carol could send them and more fights. Thor Lebowski was about get his ass kicked by Thanos when Cap picked up Mjölnir and and fought Thanos with it. Surprisingly his strength didn't seem to have boosted by it so Thanos would have kicked his ass well, until Carol made the rescue. She was about to Superman punch Thanos when he used one of the stones to blast her, pretty far I'd assume. Thanos put on the gauntlet but Tony pulled a switcheroo, put it on and snapped Thanos' henchmen and eventually him too. Unfortunately Tony wasn't strong enough to wear it and died.... ;( ;(

Tony funeral scene pulled at all the feels the movie had set up earlier (thus why it didn't drag to me). A lot of sniffing sounds in the theater. Cap was going to deliver the stones to their place via mini portal but he didn't come back. Then Bucky sees an old man sitting on a bench near the lake they were at. It's old man Steve, who went to have that happy life with Peggy. ;( The final scene IIRC was Steve and Peggy finally dancing at her home.

No post credit scene but the the title credit sequence is pretty well done.

I realize this ended up being more like an abbreviation of the movie but it's hard to put in worlds all the feeling that I experienced. No applause or anything, we Finns just don't do that. The first Avengers is still the only one I saw people doing that.

I voted very good on the poll, even though there were many aspects I felt were perfection.

I'm just gonna put my whole review in spoiler tags.

The film is 3 hours split into 3 distinctive parts, the first part is a beautifully measured look at the aftermath of the Snap, how it has effected our core heroes, it's sombre for the most part but there are moments of humour in there. I thought Cap and Nat in particular shone here, and Tony's intial response to Cap is perhaps RDJ's finest scene in his entire MCU run.

I have to mention Professor Hulk here, I loved how this was pulled off, I can just imagine how much fun Ruffalo had doing this version of Hulk and I thought he nailed it, creating some of the most entertaining moments in the film amidst the heavy stakes.

The second half of the film is the aptly named 'Time Heist' as The Avengers go after the Time Stones in different eras of the MCU timeline. This is great fun, firstly we get the recruitment part with some very amusing stuff with beer belly Thor, and the gritty realization of what has become of Hawkeye, his sequence as Ronin in Japan is our first glimpse of the Russos impeccaple hand when it comes to action.

Once the Time Heist kicks in it's kinda like a Mission Impossible sequence with all the moving parts, it's an entertaining, at times touching, and in the case of Clint and Nat's mission, a heartbreaking sequence of events. Thor's mission to Asgard served up a nice scene with his Mom while the initial heist for 3 stones that takes place in the Battle of New York is fun.

The two standout sequences here for me were Cap and Tony travelling back to the 70's and Nat and Clint going for the Soul Stone. Tony meeting his father in the 70's was so well written and acted, while Cap gets a glimpse at Peggy while recovering Pym particles. The "fight" between Nat and Clint over who is going to give their life for the Soul Stone was so well shot and a heartbreakingly desperate struggle between two friends that love each other like brother & sister, I wasn't sure until the last minute which of them would die, I'm sad to see Nat go but she went out giving Clint the second chance he gave her, which was bittersweet perfection.

The last part of the film is pure spectacle mixed with some wonderful character moments before the final character beats play out. It features some time travel-fu that I'm not even going to pretend to have fully grasped yet. The first snap led to one of the most visually stunning shots I've ever seen as all the heroes returned to take part in a battle reminiscent of those seen in LOTR.

In this battle everyone pretty much gets a chance to shine, Hawkeye is badass, Black Panther and Spidey run for the endzone with the Gauntlet, Iron Man & Pepper do a Mr & Mrs Smith before she rescues Spidey, Wanda hands Thanos his ass in a colossal show of power before he calls in the gunships, Captain Marvel swoops in to take out Thanos' mothership and almost him before he outmaneuvers her, and the MCU Ladies all come together for a powerhouse attack on Thanos forces that features a string of big moneyshots with an especially cool one for Valkyrie as she takes down a Leviathan. I felt Ant-Man & Wasp got a little short changed here as their part in Cap's plan didn't come to fruition and Wasp didn't get a big moment, which Ant-Man did....literally.

At the core of this battle is the big 3 facing Thanos, and the real center of this is a fantastic one on one battle between Cap and Thanos, the Russos absolutely captured the titanic struggle in all it's glory, and the moment where Cap summoned Mjolnir had my audience gasping. :D

As the dust settlled and Thanos turned to dust in a fantastic shot after Tony delivers the 2nd snap with "I am Iron Man!" it dawned on me that we'd "only" lost Nat, the big 3 were still alive.....then the camera turned to Tony and I knew. :(

The aftermath was filled with fantastic, if bittersweet, character scenes. The funeral for Tony was really nicely done and kind of reminded me of a more sombre version of the end of ROTJ, it was nice to see Clint back with his family and Scott and Hope starting their life together with Cassie, and the little scenes with Clint and Wanda and Happy and Morgan were nicely done while the shot of T'Challa, Shuri and Ramonda overlooking Wakanda as Tony's holomessage played was grand. I think the choice for Thor to make Valkyrie Queen of Asgard and for him to jet off with the Guardians was a good one, Hemsworth's humour fits with that motley crew.

Then we get the finale........I knew the moment Cap set off to take the Time Stones back that he wouldn't return, at least not as we know him. The little interaction with his boys Bucky and Sam played well here and I loved the scene with him and Sam when he reappeared as an old man, it looks like they are going down the route of Falcon becoming Captain America afterall. Evans kinda looked like Clint Eastwood in that aged up guise. Then we get the shot of the wedding ring that leads us into the final shot of Cap and Peggy having that dance at last! :)

Overall this is a triumph, you can argue over pacing, it will suit some more than others, there isn't much action in the first 2 hours of the film but the character and story work is excellent. The choice to have Tony finish off Thanos was fiiting as everything began with him, and to end with Cap and Peggy together was pitch perfect from the Russos, even if I wish Tony had lived, his sacrifice heightened by seeing the life he'd made with Pepper in the 5 years post-snap. The Russos have done what only George Lucas and Peter Jackson have done before IMO, hats off of them!

9.5/10

As introduction: I was huge Star Wars fan before ST and I hate TLJ. Having that cleared: I loved AEG. The plotholes were so big so you could park a bus but I can live with that. Russos are masters.

Huge disappointment. I am actually sad because of that, silly I know. These characters deserved so much better. I can’t even rate it because I wouldn’t be objective , that’s how disappointed I am. The only character that I liked was Rocket Raccoon. They turned a fun first part, infinity war, into a sappy drama while ruining just about every inch of character development of the previous 22 films.

I didn't personally see any of that, then again the issues people had with TLJ kind of went over my head so I'm probably not the best judge. In regards to subverting expectations people are probably just pissed off that their predictions were wrong which is silly. I didn't see any "Rey is nobody" moment anyway.

Could you explain why you think the criticism of TLJ amounted to people being annoyed that their predictions didn't pan out? I've literally never seen any Star Wars fan who disliked it say anything remotely like this, yet those who liked the movie whether inside the fandom or the media repeat this idea over and over again. If this straw man takes hold in the MCU fandom as it did with Star Wars then I can see harmony between fans going much the same way here as it did there.

I'm glad someone else picked up on
Thor as the Dude ( the big LeThorski) I'm sure that was intentional, all he needed was a white Russian drink and to go bowling.

Sorry, I was a bit slow with SPOILER tags, now.

Agree, Endgame almost doesn't feel like a "Part 2" of the same story - it's completely its own thing, with such a different unique story, visual design and character moments, as opposed to IW. Yet it IS a continuation of the events of IW. The two beautifully complement each other, to be honest.

And one thing I Iove in both films: the distinct visual "personalities" of each:

- The orange-ish color filtering in IW (Titan, Wakanda, even a bit in the NY battle - right to the film's title logo.
- The blue/purple-ish color filtering in EG (The Garden, Tokyo, Avengers Facility and most of the final act) - again right to even the film's logo.

Tony literally called him Lebowski. :funny:

What do you think they got wrong with the characters? Or is it because they didn’t show more?

In short, I liked it, but didn’t love it. There were some pretty major choices I’m not a fan of that soured it a bit for me. Feeling kinda empty about it at the moment, it’s a good film but there’s some parts of it I just can’t get behind. Misstep is the wrong word, but it’s a strange one.

Just got out and im kinda upset i feel the way i feel. Id give it a 3. I wasnt so crazy about infinity war but it grew on me a lot so maybe that happens with this one too. Right now, IW seema like a much, much better film.
Without giving anything away, this one felt gimmicky to me. It had some weird rules that made zero sense, and even the movie ignores them when convenient. It bothered me throughout the entire film.
The performances and fights were out of this world. Flawless.
