you wont be able to change your password til it comes back up

Will changing my credit card number protect me from fraud?

I am scared out of my wits rights now! :waa:
Cancelling a credit card is actually really easy. I've had my CC number stolen twice and found mysterious charges on my account when I checked it online. Don't let that sit - when you see something weird, call your bank and they'll just cancel the card and send you a new one. You're not liable for charges you didn't make. They don't ask any questions. It'll probably take you 20 minutes, most of which will be on hold to talk to someone. :funny:

again you guys are worried about the wrong things...yeah CC info is bad to have out there but a seasoned Identity Thefter can use your info to apply for a credit card and charge a bunch of stuff to your credit rating
Yup. That's the danger. Having your CC stolen is annoying, but it's definitely not the worst thing to happen. What you do have to do is check your credit report every year to make sure everything's good.

Well I guess I better cancel my debit card I used and get a new one. And also change my password on my PSN account.
Good luck! Debit cards I think have as much protection now as CC cards, but one of my friends had her debit and PIN hacked and got thousands stolen from her checking account, and WaMu did not believe that it was stolen because they thought a PIN could not be hacked. :cmad: It was such a pain to get that money back.

Roach is right. I've been round this merry-go-round before. It took me about a year to finally convince a company I'd been a victim of fraud and for them to stop sending me letters, calling me, and even threatening to come to the house.

There's no two ways around it; this is a disaster from every which way you look at it. I'm not talking about PSN either, this is like faith destroying stuff for online gaming in general. Do I want an NGP now? Do I want to use a service that could easily cause me more trouble.

I read from G4 that Sony has already sent usernames and contact info to TransUnion, Equifax and Experian so if your account was compromised your credit card company has been made aware.
If you are still skittish then put a fraud alert on your credit report

This is pretty insane stuff. I don't think I've ever actually given my credit card info online, and pretty sure I wiped it if I did afterward. Should probably keep an eye on it all, regardless. Man, digital disaster

from what I read, different states have different laws. Some states require that authorities be informed before consumers, in the event of something like this happening. The gov is only looking at things from CT's end but not every state operates like his. Its not like Sony was doing nothing for almost a week. They were runing a thorough investigation and said something once they got the okay to do so.
Blumenthal has a reputation of going after companies regardless when he was Attorney General of Connecticut.

Yea, this is going to get much bigger.

In a letter sent to Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton, Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, questioned whether Sony promptly informed users of the PSN breach and potential exposure of personal data.

"Although the breach occurred nearly a week ago, Sony has not notified customers of the intrusion, or provided information that is vital to allowing individuals to protect themselves from identity theft, such as informing users whether their personal or financial information may have been compromised," says Blumenthal in the letter, which is posted on his website.

Blumenthal wants Sony to provide the PSN's 70 million subscribers with access to financial data security services and insurance to counter "the possible financial consequences of identity theft.".

edit: I think this was already posted, but still, this could be just the start of Sony's troubles with this.

-When PSN goes back up, change your password ASAP.

-If you use that same password for anything else, change those now. Especially if it's your email password.

-Call the credit card company and report the card stolen, you'll get a new card. Or just keep a close eye on your statements and call immediately when you don't recognize a charge.

-Check your credit report every so often, to make sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on.

-Do not respond to any spam emails, Sony will never ask for user information via email.

Generally these are all things one should do every so often anyway, especially password changing and keeping an eye on your credit score. Sony's statement has a good amount of information about what to do, including numbers to call to place Fraud Alerts: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/26/update-on-playstation-network-and-qriocity/

PSN Scandal could cost Sony more than 24 Billion Dollars

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_sony_playstation_credit_cards_warning

Simply put, one of the worst breaches we've seen in several years," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer for Application Security Inc.

Shaul said that not having direct proof of credit card information theft should not instill a sense of security, and could mean Sony just didn't know what files were touched.
"They indicated that they're worried about it, which is probably a very strong indication that everything was stolen," he said.

The Ponemon Institute, a data-security research firm, estimated that the cost of a data breach involving a malicious or criminal act averaged $318 per compromised record in 2010, up 48 percent from the year earlier.
That could pin the potential cost of the PlayStation breach at more than $24 billion.

Just to give you an idea, Sony is worth around US$53.68 billion

"They indicated that they're worried about it, which is probably a very strong indication that everything was stolen,".....as in CC info/E-mail passwords/addresses and stuff?????

I don't know why Sony would wait a week before revealing this. They've now opened themselves up to massive lawsuits should someone's identity actually be stolen.

IF Sony does end up losing over 24 Billion and plus losing possible lawsuits then it would be Game Over for them!

That's a damn shame and IF Sony goes down then they will hunt down MS&Nintendo next until there's no more f'n consoles.

I'd like to think that Sony really wasn't stupid enough to wait a week before telling everyone. I'm sure as they were going through the system, they began to realize just how deep they got into their files.

I'm glad I didn't wait to cancel my card haha. Though we'll see how much good that did me.

I need some confirmation. So the database was hacked and they can use our passwords & login to access our accounts. Now will the credit card number be fully accessible or will it still be encrypted like we see it?

Because people are saying we will be safe once we are able to change our PSN passwords which implies the cards are only usable within PSN. They don't have the PIN/Security codes though.

Sony is not going to go down...the video game section of Sony is a small part
