Just a question for the hype, it may have been asked before but I don't remember and wasn't really sure what to search for.

African American is a term used to describe black (or darker skinned) people in the US. Obviously they were born in America but they still want to keep their heritage to Africa as well. What do black people in other countries call their ethnicity? Like people who are black and born and raised in England or somewhere like that? Just curious.

in Mexico we call them "mexicans" what a concept huh?

I know a lot of black people who dont like the term "African-American"....why do we call them that? Especially because we dont call Japanese people "Japanese-Americans" and such.

Also, in Europe do they call black people "African-Americans?

Well the question for me arised by filling out an application that asked for Ethnicity. Do other countries do the same and what are the options?

not...Post-Incans or something?

nope, oddly enough, and racial slurs are no big deal here.
I'm really pale and growing up I had a really dark skinned friend
we used to say the most un-pc things to each other, and come
to think of it, everyone did.

I have a similiar question.

What do they call the class we call "english" in non-english-speaking countries?

I think they do the same thing, call it by their own language. I know at least in Germany, they call classes focused on grammar, writing and literature "German" (well they call it "Deutsch, but you get what I mean.)

nah! at least here in Tijuana, gay guys are called mayates, for some reason or another. Infact, short of some dude calling some guy "pinche indio taraumara" I have never heard like full on racial slurs, like half my friends where dark, and they where all "el negro" and I was always "el guero" one guy called me "fantomas":(

Do you mean: Do people from Europe call black people from America "African-American"

or: Do people from Europe call black people from Europe "African-American"? I really hope you don't mean this one. Why would someone not from America be called American?

Theyre about a hundred ways to refer to a homosexual in spanish.

As for the thread topic,I've always wondered this myself. Where's Odin's Lapdog?

It's cool because all of these alternate terms for a gay person still sound very gay to me even though I'm from a different culture.

I'm happy to hear what other cultures call gays, but my main question is about Ethnicity. In the US, when you fill out an application they ask for your Ethnicity.

White people = Caucasian
Black people = African American

The others are pretty self explanitory, but my quetion is do other countries ask for ethnicity on applicaitons and if so what are the options.

guess you're going to have to wait for someone from another country to read your thread... good thing we're keeping this thread on the first page for you with our off-topic discussion :o
