Evil Dead (2013)

Can we really say that this franchise has "lasted" when they haven't made a movie in 20 years? There's a nice cult built around Evil Dead, I count myself as a member, but Oz will likely outgross the whole series on Friday.

It's lasted pretty damn strong through midnight showings, video games, toy merchandising, dozens of DVD/blu-ray editions and tons of comics.

Of course Oz will out gross it. Oz will outgross just about every horror franchise.

Sure, but as a film property Evil Dead has been dead for 2 decades. Now, it has a dedicated cult and the films are terrific, but it's never been a mainstream success. Even compared to other horror franchises. The franchise ended when it no longer became financially feasible to make the films.

And that's perfectly alright. Not every franchise has to be $100+ million blockbusters that appeal to everyone and spawn film after film. Box office =/= quality. But, even in regards to other horror franchises, Alien, Halloween, The Exorcist, The Omen, Friday, the 13th, Scream, Saw, Paranormal Activity, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. the franchise has been a small financial success where it's always been a struggle to get the next film made.

I'm curious to see if the cult following for the originals will continue to grow as a result of the remake introducing them to the idea, as well as how Evil Dead really has been a staple of fanboyish culture for decades. I mean, I had heard of it, but never saw it until the beginning of my freshman year in college (fall 2002), and I fell in love right away. I have quite a few friends around my age who also love the franchise. That was almost 10 years after Army of Darkness came out, so I wonder if the series is still alive on college campuses and the like?

I don't think that matters though. Those films have lived on. I believe they are more popular now even as a film franchise then it was in the 80s or 90s. Its always been a word of mouth movie through friends. Practically Everyone finds out about these movies, and that says alot.

I don't think anyone can argue that the most hype this film would gain through word of mouth, movie news and the net is if BC came back. I really doubt this franchise can last more then one movie without an Ash character. You can argue Ash did not make Evil Dead 1 (even though hes still a main character), but the more famous sequels strictly rely on that character. He's still the face of it. I highly doubt, ditching that character for more then one film will give the good word of mouth and high cult status of this franchise any favors. Or the new franchise for that matter. He is still a marketable character, even though the films came out deacdes ago. Those films arent some inside movie secret only hardcore fans now about.

There were no Planet of the Apes films for about 20 years until the Burton film and then it was another 10 years after that.

The franchise is still kicking though.

Closer to 30 actually.

Sure, but it's not kicking with Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, and Kim Hunter. Maybe the same basic ideas are at play, but it's not a continuation as the original series played itself out.

And, it should be noted, Planet of the Apes was a huge mainstream hit. The Evil Dead films are beloved cult films. There's a difference.

Honestly, if the ED reboot is waiting for Ash to come back and save the day, the film is dead on arrival. Hopefully at least one of the characters will turn out to be as compelling, although perhaps not in the same way as Ash.

Well that's my point, it doesn't necessarily need Bruce Campbell.

Evil Dead is almost archetypal in and of itself. There's a reason why the eponymous cabin in "Cabin in the Woods" is a reconstruction of the cabin from ED.

The location and the concept are pretty much the equivalent of slasher film characters.

It screens tonight at SXSW, so I'm expecting twitter reactions and a handful of reviews by Monday.

Bloody-Disgusting is likely to have theirs up as soon as possible.

They're dedicating the month to Evil Dead.

Not that the ED films are particularly known for their music, but who is scoring this new film?

Roque Baños, the score leaked like a month ago, maybe you can found something on youtube.

Thanks. That seems like an unfortunate last name.

EVIL DEAD knocks it out of the park. More fun and way more gory than even he trailers would lead you to believe! #evildead #sxsw

Matt Singer ‏@mattsinger

The two women behind me walked out of EVIL DEAD midway because it was too intense. "I can't handle this" was the line I heard.

Alan Cerny ‏@NordlingAICN

EVIL DEAD is *beep* phenomenal. SCARY AS *beep*

Renn Brown ‏@RennBrown

Evil Dead just killed #SXSW. A deluge of deserved hyperbole to follow.

Sounds good. :woot:

I can't wait!

It's the only remake that I can remember actually being really excited for. Most remakes of films I love, I'm usually hesitant or just curious, but this I can't wait for.

Seen a few negatives on it as well. Some saying its not good, not scary and kinda stupid... but everyone agrees it's def the goriest thing to be released in quite some time.

I kinda wonder though if those are people that liked Evil Dead to begin with. Because the thing about that series, though most get it and love it (more so film fans) I know many that just don't like the style, or don't care for it's extremely dark humor.

I think some will go in there expecting the typical type of horror movie.....only to see the most awesome kind. lol.

Exactly.

The fact some or one are saying the movie was stupid doesn't bother me...just look at the original. While I love it to death, it still is a bit silly due to bad acting and the extremely low budget.

I predict higher then that. A lot film aficionados are fans of Evil Dead, it was quite a land mark to many. And still is on most top horror film lists. But I don't like to predict scores, mainly because it's pointless lol.

As long as its a good time, Im all for it. Hope this flick kicks ass. This has been said not to follow the humor of ED2 and AOD. So I have been expecting an ultra serious take this time around. IM all for the humor and style of the originals if thats their take. Thats why Im a fan of the series. ED1 was never my fav.

From all I've seen and now heard though is that the gore has been all thats praised or shown off. I'm glad its gory, the more the better but that seems to be all that they are banking on or what people have been impressed with so far.

As long as it gets higher than any of the PA films, I'll be cool with that.
